Juan Román Riquelme: The Man Who Messi Avenged

  • 'El Torero' is an icon of Argentina, having built a legend status with Boca and Argentinos Juniors while also standing out for the national side across a decade. His time playing in Spain was limited and mixed, but the world of European football was astounded by his talents while they could. Rebellious, introverted, and infamous for clashes with authority, Juan Roman Riquelme's story lives on but more should know it.

For some reason Román is the closest player to Zidane’s style of play. Slow zero pace with tactical dribbling ability & a brilliant footballing brain with unbelievable vision on the field. Can dissect a whole team with one killer through ball pass while standing looking disinterested for less than couple seconds. A set piece specialist from a direct/indirect free kicks & cheeky corners. Both footed with good long range shooting power type goals. Juan Román Riquelme is arguable the greatest Boca Juniors player of all time if we agree that El Diego belonged to Napoli ?

@Stephen Greenhorn however, the game was changing to a more fast paced, defensive-minded way. Juan Roman is the last true 10, but could not fit to the new playing styre, nor did he want to do so. Maybe the main reason he only had a couple of good years in Europe, while being the king of America. Being a 10 is more abundant there.

He never won a world cup or copa, so these kinds of players often go into obscurity.
Baggio and Riquelme were two players who sat on Zidane's talent level in my opinion, but by never winning major titles or playing in CL/for a big team they just fade into memory of football connoisseurs.
I've never seen a player like Riquelme who you simply could not get the ball off of.

A very old fashioned phrase in football is the best way I can think to describe a player who even during his career seemed like a very old fashioned type of genius and that phrase is that he is a player I would have paid good money to watch. There will never be another like him again, because a player like him simply would not make it to the professional game these days. The best I've probably ever seen at slowing a game down to the pace that he wanted to play it at. Truly the last of his kind and sadly misunderstood by many particularly here in Europe.

Excellent job, very thorough and well researched. One piece of constructive criticism that I could add is, try to check how most of these Argentinean teams are pronounced in Spanish, some of the players and coaches names too, because most of the time, you were mispronouncing them. Again, loved the video, I just wanted to point that out. Great job.

Really well done video. Could you do one for Redondo? Nobody really gives him the credit he deserves, I think partly because of his career sadly swindling out at Milan due to injuries.. You can make a fair argument to make him the finest holding controller to ever play the game during his 90s Real stint. A player to show any young kid who wants to play the game.

Excellent player, but sometimes an excellent footballer could play in a wrong club, with a wrong coach.. By far, he's one of the last classic number 10

Gran video de un gran jugador latinoamericano, ustedes los europeos no lo vieron tanto y no se dan cuenta de la eminencia del futbol que representa Riquelme por estos lados. No ganó todo en Europa porque no tuvo ganas. Literal

I loved Riquelme his vision his style of play was magic..... for me it's a travesty that Argentina didn't win the 2006 world cup the coach made a huge mistake not bringing messi on as a sub against Germany in the QF

Argentina in 2010 world cup with riquelme, zanetti, cambiasso would have been something else. The squad depth was insane at the time.

@@theretroroute this was the golden age of football IMO... But i would suggest doing a lot more videos on players that were actively playing more recently since that might get you more viewership especially with the younger audience.. I personally enjoy these cause like I said before it was the Golden Age of the beautiful game
