  • We love our dogs but the behavior they show is because of all the hard work and training that I have put into them. There are always people asking about my Malinois and can they be good family dogs? This breed is not for everyone but I do feel the world is missing out on the amazing qualities of this breed.

    My rescue Malinois is not mouthy at all. She's very calm. She's a couch potato (would really rather sleep than do almost anything).
    She was listed as a German Shepherd/Husky mix, and we didn't discover that she was a Malinois until we took her for her after adoption checkup (the Vet Tech had two).
    She came to us with several issues: she was terrified of people (more than the wariness of a Mal), she was terrified of cars (understandable, since she was hit and lost an eye), and severe Isolation Anxiety.
    With time, and a lot of patience, she's conquered two out of the three. The Isolation Anxiety is being managed by medicine.
    She's a fantastic dog and I love her to bits.

    I have Belgian Tervurens (same dog, long coat). I agree with your comments 100%. Spot on!!!
    They are needy, so true. AKC breed standard on temperament: "giving and demanding attention." That's very accurate. My Belgians join me in everything - walk, sleep, work, cook, open the UPS package, scrub the floor... Talk in a video conference 🙄.
    I adore them. That being said, while my friends, family, and neighbors all admire my Tervs, not ONE person who has met them thinks they could live with one - too much work and training for most people. 🤷

    Hi you are absolutely correct about the breed. It’s great that you are stating the facts about this wonderful breed. Yes Exercise is a must but mental stimulation is also a MUST as the breed is very intelligent & is a working breed.
    Thank you for doing this video as someone looks at your dogs & say they are beautiful & yes they are but all the things Whiskey & Freedom do is due to your training : consistency and patience and reward. It’s a
    Constant daily routine and training that you do. People
    Who are interested in getting a Malinois need to do their research go to the correct breeder and understand the work and the commitment you put in to this dog for the dogs life for the rest of the dogs life and if you are not willing to do that then this is not the breed for them.
    Thank you again.

What floors me is all the traits they display that come naturally. Their problem solving skills and desire to serve, are off the charts. They deserve a different level of love and respect than other breeds.

    Belgian machine gun nibbles really set these guys apart from other breeds, they communicate so much with their mouths and noses and have awesome bite inhibition which is weird because they are powerful chewers. I agree with everything you said especially that they’re just dogs. Like any dog you get out what you put in, if you want an aggressive dog play rough, put yourself on their level and make them mad, if you want a companion dog treat them with respect. It works the same with any breed. I got my dog from an ‘Oorah’ ex-military guy that got tired of how aggressive the dog had become, surprisingly once I got him away from that environment he calmed down a lot. It took years to get where we are now but I fully trust my guy in any social situation as long as I keep people from wrestling or playing tug of war with him.

  • @malinoisdogtraining3441
    @malinoisdogtraining3441 Před rokem +2

    I totally agree.
    You must exercise the body and mind.
    Especially the mind.
    I can wear out my 2 malinois in 10 minutes..making them work for the ball.
    Then sprinting full stride to get it and return. Waiting for the next command.
    Running these dogs alot can create a cardiovascular monster.
    Hard to tire out.
    Too each thier own.
    But pay attention to your dogs tongue.
    When the tip of the tongue swells out.gets much wider at the tip.
    It's time to rest and hydrate.

  • @PARoth2011
    @PARoth2011 Před rokem +3

    Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video. It’s so important for people to SEE this side of the now “hot, celebrity CZcams dog” and it also validated what I intuitively know about my own GSD/BM rescue. She is amazing if I mentally train her several times a day along with exercise but on those days when all hell is breaking loose and I just run her with the ball for short periods I have a much more frenetic dog who is driving me crazy as she follows me around begging for more playtime. And YES to the Velcro part…to the point that if we go out for a few hours and I leave her loose she will do something like eat my boots and if I crate her she will destroy her bed. These dogs can’t bear to be separated from their person. My dog has locked me out of the house several times (yesterday as I was getting the clothes off the line) in her frantic struggle to open the door 🤣 people have NO idea! The rescues are not so much someone else’s problem dog because it suggests the dog was born with problems, it is more like the person who got this dog didn’t know how to handle and train it and got in over their head creating a dog they couldn’t handle then those of us who do rescue must try to figure out what the hell those idiots did. Right now my daughter and fiancée are visiting and my dog barks every time they enter the room so I have to keep her on a leash at all times to correct her. I had a consult with the GSD rescue last night and they said they had the feeling she had been harshly trained and may possibly have been improperly introduced to puppy bite work. She was definitely afraid of men when they got her. Sigh…You are SO right, CONSISTENCY IS EVERYTHING!

    I have an 11 month old mal shepherd mix. But his heart/drive is mainly mal! His body is mal/shepherd mix. I wholeheartedly agree with the MENTAL exercise being as or more important than the physical exercise. He is a lovey, toothy, smart doggo. God help me as I try to train this amazing dog, as my 30 year experience is with golden retrievers 🤣

    She's absolutely gorgeous! You are absolutely right. There is alot of hype about insanely exercising this breed and alot of people create this mystique about them as if almost nobody can handle them and that they can't be pets so it can be counterproductive and alot of people are probably afraid they can't deal with one who so they miss the opportunity to get a great dog.
    I have found that there are games you can play with them even in the house that get them to use their brain. My 3 month old puppy still has not learned to be gentle but he's gradually getting better about it. I have bruises and scabs from scratches he's left all over my arms. One of the trainers, Susan Garrett, that I watch on CZcams suggested a specific game to distract puppies who are chewing on you or other things they aren't supposed to where you say something like "What you doing?" and drop a piece of food or treat near them. It actually works pretty well to get them to stop what they're doing and focus. Sometimes mine will suddenly get the urge to chew on me in the middle of my training him and 9 times out of 10 that cue works to get him to stop.
    When he's not mauling my arms he's very comical and has some really unique traits such as sitting up on his haunches and lifting up his front legs. Being as long-bodied as he is you wouldn't think he could balance that way but amazingly he does!
    He also likes to hold his leash in his mouth when I take him outside to go to the bathroom.
    I was clearing some vines and small trees in my yard and he tries to tug on some of them while I'm breaking up sticks and branches.
    When he's settling down to go to sleep he makes these funny sounds like groans. Tonight he was a bit wound up and whining and circling when it was time for bed so I put this crackle toy in his crate with him and he's been entertaining himself with it for the passt 15 minutes or so and quiet (other than the sound of the toy). It's a disk-shaped fabric thing that is stuffed with crackle material that I bought on Chewy and he absolutely loves the sound of it. He's now fast asleep.

      They can be over exercised. You need to decide when they switch off. Separate kennels are good for this. Take them out and then put them in their kennel for a bit so they can absorb everything they have been exposed to.

    • @kashankirk
      @kashankirk Před 9 měsíci

      Youre setting yourself up for serious issues with your dog. Its a working dog and treats / food works a different mental state separate from the inbred job drive, which overides the food drive. Basically youre rewarding bad behavior by using treats and food as a distraction, rather than refining behaviors with markers (i.e. treats).
      In general, if you have to kennel your dog rather than giving them their own space to r&r, the dog's mental and social conditioning balance is not ideal.

    Yes, all good. I suspect that you've not yet had a Malinois aging. These begin to slow a bit at 3.5 years. By six years I place them on part senior diet and stop working them out, just a couple play sessions and inside the house mostly. With just one of these little shepherds have to vacuum every day, dust mop, then damp mop travel areas, every single day. These do NOT shed as much as the GSDs. I'm on my third Malinois now who's almost nine years. The past two made in nicely to 14. I only recommend one at at time. When younger, we've had three GSDs, at same time. And we've enjoyed several other breeds, large and toy. Take away here, from me, is to slow down training early. Even at five years, ok to slow them down; please keep these inside house with family if possible and often softly talk to them. They WILL listen to everything, just like all dogs. :)

    Ojt of my 4 dogs my mal is my wild child. She needs to live in a boot camp routine or she’s a devil. She’s a good dog though. She’s less drivey than my working line GSDs and more mellow BUT she’s so sensitive. You have to handle her consistent and gentle or she will melt down. She redirects on her handler when she’s over threshold. It’s been a learning process on how to best meet her needs
    Great dog, a lot of work. Worth every minute. Glad I have the other guys though to balance her out. I’d go mental with out my steady Eddie dogs that require less mental effort on my part.

    THIS!!! You are so very very very RIGHT! Thank you for sharing your lives and teaching us in this dream of ours of a GREAT dog Life! We are not Mally owners< We are a Recuse Dutch Shep owner. She showed up with another BIG BIG very aggressive dog on our ten aches which tried to attack me at 530am Sept12-2023. Yes, I tried to shoot the attacking dog. The DS ran out to our plane Hanger under Our RV and the attacking dog ran to another property. NO, I did not kill dog, I missed, and I do have a scar. We won't go into anymore of story. But the two dogs looked nothing alike. At full light, my husband and I went out to call out. Unreal she came belly crawling right to my feet; My Husband immediately goes that's a puppy and She just imprinted on you. Didn't know what that meant at that time, but She has never left myside other than visit at her vet. And super protective of me that was not taught! Vet said she was either a Malino or a Dutch Shepard or reg Shepard. Not chipped. And about 4mon. Lots of baby teeth. And she was under at least 20lbs under lbs. and didn't know if she would make it. We went ahead with due dalliances and Posted in all Pet lost founds areas, FB, Local areas, etc. for 6wks and had generally Vet treatment. Fast forward 3/6/24 SUPER spoiled super healthy still has not nor leaves myside. And has been determined A Dutch Shepard. I use everything you teach with her to great happiness with us! Thank you and all be blessed!

    We having a walky-date with a mallinois-mix rescue. If the dog likes us we will take him unless the shelter-staff do not approve us to be worthy (like, we don't show enough confidence and so on). All my knowledge currently is theoretical and although I grew up with dogs this would be the very first dog of my own.
    I am so looking forward and I gonna buy some treats today. Maybe that gives a little convincing help hehe ^^ But yeah. We live in an apartement and we have tons of parks around us yet I couldn't get any dog thats too small and low drive since the walks to those places take some time and at minimum always half and hour up to 1 1/2 hours just to get to those places.
    Stay crunchy. (That means, extra treats for the doggos if you read this)

    Really beautiful dog. Our Roo is a Malinois from the Sacramento area. Age 14 and we love her to pieces. It’s now time to start looking for another puppy. Would really appreciate if you could give me contact info for a good breeder. Just stumbled on your CZcams channel. If you are breeding, we are interested. We are in Victoria British Columbia but willing to travel. thanks!

    I rescued a American Pitbull Terrier Mix puppy (about 6 months old) and I'm pretty sure he is mixed with Belgian Malinois do you have any advice? I work 10 to 12 hours a day 4 days a week. I have a 2yr old female Weimaraner Mix that I rescued 9 months ago.

    Could you please your audience a bit about your background? I’m interested in what made you and your husband so good in dog training. Did you visit any puppy school with your both Malinois? Thank you!

    I would love a Dog lime Freedom. Does your breeder still breed? How much did you pay if you don't mind me asking?

    Your German Shepherd was the one on the scale. I have both and the German is Uber loyal as is the Malinois

    • @neucounty
      @neucounty  Před 11 měsíci

      No. The boy on the scale is a Malinois 100% Pure Malinois. He’s just way out of size standard. Our precious German shepherd passed away last October.

    Sadly so many are in need of rescue due to being popularized in a John Wick movie. Plan to retire and thinking about adopting a male and female.

    Do you have any recommendations on supplements ? I have a 8 month old female Mal and I was doing NUVET vitamins and joint supplements but heard it wasn’t all that.

    • @neucounty
      @neucounty  Před rokem +1

      Honestly the best thing is to watch her exercise. Don’t over due the Sit the jumps the running. First two years should be easy on the joints. Makes the legs last so much longer.

    I couldn't agree more. I have a brother and sister but my male only made it to 9 due to bad genetics so I will be getting a male puppy soon for Rocket who is 10 now. I'm sure she will be a bitch at first like she was with her younger brother but having 2 is perfect for my lifestyle. I tell people all the time don't get one just because mine are well-behaved. They are very high maintenance but worth it.

    how are they around smaller animals? cats?

    • @parkerbrown-nesbit1747
      @parkerbrown-nesbit1747 Před měsícem

      It depends on the dog. Mine is very curious about cats (like she doesn't quite understand what they are). She has a very low prey drive.
      Some of them have a high to very high prey drive, and will go after anything small.

    There's alot of people that say the Belgium Malinois isn't a good dog cause of the drive they have. But yet breeders keep breeding them & I've never seen any in a shelter if they're that bad. I've seen a puppy but that's it. I see more Pit Bulls & GSD.

      They are in shelters. There are 2 in shelters in my area . Mine was from a shelter . She was 7 months when I adopted her & is now 12.
