    Your level of half assery and sheer disorganization drive my OCD absolutely insane! But, damn dude I can’t stop watching your channel. Keep doing you my friend.

    OH my god, I went through the exact same realization a week ago. The fewer obstacles in the way of recording the better - adding a patch bay to my own little studio has been an absolute game changer. Keep it up!

    I think its the coolest its ever looked so far, though the rug was a nice contrast. You should hang a mic up that shaft and use it for reverb chamber.

    Dude , I think a lot of your problems could be taken care of by buying a couple of patchbays and having everything always neatly plugged and organized around the tascam 388 .
    It is kind of a lot of thinking but when you get it done the right way , patchbays are the fastest way to work with analog gear .

    This new setup looks better, yes you have a bit more room tone but you can always slap a few rockwool panels here and there. You'll have the advantage of a better stereo image since now it looks more symmerical. One thing you should watch out for, regardless of where you set up, is the room modes in your listening position: the biggest difference you can make on the bass response is where you're sitting in the room, everything else comparatively makes almost no difference.
    This might sound complicated but it's not, one simple thing you can do is program a sine wave oscillator to sweep backward and forward between 20Hz and say 150-200Hz, slowly so it takes around 5 seconds to sweep up and 5 to sweep down again.
    Then sitting on your chair (this is important cause head height also matters) just listen to the sine wave and progressively move your chair back a foot at a time until you find the spot where there's the least dips in volume during the sweep.
    You'll find that is the spot where the bass will sound the most balanced, you can then setup your speakers and desk from there.
    Let me know if you need help I can send you a wave file for you to loop :)

    • @edsavage6214
      @edsavage6214 Před 7 měsíci

      @@travisraab Is worth the hassle, you'll see even a single foot can make a huge difference. What you're aiming for is a sweep that sounds as consistent as possible all the way through

    Excited about this change! Also very happy you’re feeling good about it. I’ve been working on a mix pretty much all day, and I’m shot. I wish I could rearrange and organize my space, too. It’s good in so many ways. Cheers, Travis.

    Streamlining your studio is a great thing to do. I used to have a few synths, bunch of guitars and basses ect. Sold most of it, now I only have 1 gibson, 1fender, 1 bass, 1 poly synth, 1 mono, a handful of mics, a little bit of outboard. Could not be happier, you get to know what you have really well and the creativity just flows easier.
    You can reinvest the money you make from selling into higher quality equipment or instruments,

    I'm enjoying the videos and seeing how the changes have been going. I know it's definitely frustrating to not have everything set up optimally for your convenience and creativity, it might take some back and forth but you will get there. It seems like you have a lot of space to work with in that barn, I think it's just going to take time to get it set up so it's the easiest to maneuver and to be creative when inspiration hits. Plus I also know what it's like to have to work alone and try to be in "creative mode", and then have to set everything up, and do the wiring etc. I know you probably feel like you are doing more with wiring, setting up, moving things etc, and not getting everything done creatively like writing and recording. You are super talented, and I've definitely enjoyed seeing your channel grow. You will get it done, it just may take some time and more rearranging. And I also agree 100% with the gear situation. We love it, but it can definitely be a distraction. Sometimes less can be more as far as being creative. "limiting yourself" can be a good thing. Don't get rid of everything, but what you do sell, put it towards what can help you be more creative. ohh, and by the way, don't count that Kramer out just yet, I'm sure with a couple of neck adjustments it will be back in playing order.

  • @MaggieKeizai
    @MaggieKeizai Před 7 měsíci +1

    Man, that really sucks about the Kramer. New England weather and a barn is definitely gonna put necks through the torture test... Don't chuck it, it's worth putting a good neck on.
    ...Or giving to me to put a good neck on.

    I would wire things up so that EVERYTHING goes through the 388, and from there to your interface and 38. Have everything on a power bar(s) so with one switch you turn on the whole studio. A patch bay would be helpful.

    • @travisraab
      @travisraab  Před 7 měsíci

      I have wanted to do that but then the motor on the 388 will just run non stop and it worries me

    • @ProSimex84
      @ProSimex84 Před 7 měsíci

      @travisraab it shouldn't if you back off the tape so it's not under tension. That should stop the motors. That tensioner/idler pully activates the motor. On my r2rs anyways

    Been waiting for the rejig, such a great space, be good to see where you land with it. See if you can get a room treatment sponsor to test / review to get some acoustic treatments for the walls. Or make some cheap ones! Think out a few patch bays, a real game changer to have the 388 fully patched right near all your other things. Good luck with it, man! (dont sell the 388 pls...)

      I keep hearing about the almighty patch bay. it sounds like it'll just create more possibilities for error? they do look cool though...

    • @SPOD_ZONE
      @SPOD_ZONE Před 7 měsíci

      yeah I guess it does, but you just need to be deliberate about how you install it. I've got tonnes of old synths and drum machines all plugged in and can route them through any effect or input really fast. As long as you use new or good cables, it gets the studio out of your way as it becomes short hand. i'm about to build a new studio in my new garage, so i'm gonna be soldering new ones in place which i'm absolutely dreading, but have used the cheap plug in type for years and i've not had any probs. @@travisraab

    I have OCD when it comes to tidying up so the last video and the start of this one were rather painful to watch. Glad to see some order being established at the end. As for the rats a cat or a Jack Riussel terrier would be my solution. Keep going I love your videos and the channel.

    This channel is weird. It's like this wood paneled pocket universe where this guy plays with tape machines for eternity. It's kind of like the Rabbits sitcom in Inland Empire. Only with tape machines instead of rabbits.

    I think your new arrangement is better. If you need a tighter sound (i.e less room echo) is it possible for you to use mobile walls/screens and curtains to accomplish that?
