As part of government's continuous efforts to ensure sufficient water supply and address water security concerns in the nation, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. leads the impounding process of the Upper Wawa Dam (Phase 2 of the Wawa Bulk Water Supply Project), the largest water supply dam to be built in over 50 years, in a ceremony at Barangay San Rafael in Montalban, Rizal on 10 July 2024.
With a project cost of PhP26.5 billion, the Upper Wawa Dam is expected to provide a reliable water supply of 700 million liters per day to over 700,000 households, serving approximately 3.5 million Filipinos within the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) service area once it becomes operational.
The project will also help mitigate the perennial problem of flooding in downstream areas and localities of the Marikina River.
Construction of the 85-meter-high roller-compacted concrete Upper Wawa Dam, Phase 2 of the Wawa Bulk Water Supply Project, was completed ahead of schedule on 30 March 2024. This marked the start of the impounding process to fill up the reservoir and pave the way for commercial operations to commence by the end of 2025.
A Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the Philippine Government and Prime Infrastructure Capital, Inc. through a joint venture with San Lorenzo Ruiz Builders and Developers Group, the project was implemented by Wawa JVCo, Inc. Its primary aim is to address the growing concern of water supply shortages, water security, flood protection and climate resilience in the country.
