  • June 6, 2021 - First off, wishing a very happy birthday to Kamden aka The Elevator and Airplane Finder. To celebrate this, here of my favourite high-rise elevators since my early childhood in 2012. At my friend's place tho but it is still pretty awesome, especially the chimes!

    I have heard that elevator operators are fairly common to find in India, at least in certain types of buildings (one person said government buildings, malls, and "older commercial buildings")
    In your experience, are elevator operators fairly common in India (at least in certain types/age of buildings), and if so, what types of buildings commonly have elevator operators?
    Are these usually automatic elevators that are run by operators (but don't actually require an operator), or vintage/antique manually-controlled elevators that do require an operator to operate?

    • @NeilPrasad_1905
      @NeilPrasad_1905  Před 2 lety +1

      From my perspective, it quite necessary in certain retail malls. For other places, it's decided by their owners if it's necessary to have operators or not ( that might include high-end residential skyscrapers ).
      And it kinda does not matter if the elevators are manual, automatic or semi-automatic. It might be necessary for the safety of the people.

      How rare are manually-controlled elevators (such as those run with a lever/handle, like the Waygood-Otis you filmed) in India?

    • @NeilPrasad_1905
      @NeilPrasad_1905  Před 2 lety

      @@upanddownadventures That manually controlled i filmed wasn't Waygood-Otis, it is made by Stigler from Milan, Italy and at this rate, it's completely rare and hardly a few originalities still exist all over India unlike the fact that there are like 50 to 100 original manually controlled elevators in the United States.

      Believe it or not, there are likely definitely more than 100 left (that are run with a lever/handle specifically) in the United States (likely quite a bit more), however most are service/freight elevators.
      In terms of elevators in passenger service specifically, I am not sure how many are left, I am guessing maybe around 100-250 examples left.
      A large chunk of these elevators, both service/freight, and in passenger service, are located in New York City.
      I think they are MUCH rarer in some, if not many other countries. In the UK there are less than 5 examples known so far for example.

      @@upanddownadventures Yeah, i'm aware. Although the first ever manually controlled elevator i saw on the internet was a Haughton freight elevator in Pittsburgh, PA. It was original from 1899 and ripped out in 2015.
