    The song was influenced by decadent French poet Charles Baudelaire's 'Les Fleurs du mal' - Flowers of Evil, and is based on the book, 'The Master and Margarita', written during the Stalinist era by Russian author Mikhail Bulgakov. The story concerns a visit by the devil to the officially atheistic Soviet Union. The Master and Margarita combines supernatural elements with satirical dark comedy and Christian philosophy, defying categorization within a single genre. Many critics consider it to be one of the best novels of the 20th century, as well as the foremost of Soviet satires.
    Sympathy for the Devil is considerd one of the greatest songs of the 60's, on par with Dylan's Like A Rolling Stone and All Along the Watchtower. It is a song of dread and forboding that represents the dark side of the 60's. The lyrics:
    'I watched with glee
    While your kings and queens
    Fought for ten decades
    For the gods they made'
    Is a reference to The Hundred Years' War a series of armed conflicts between the kingdoms of England and France during the Late Middle Ages.
    As for Jagger's voice, the Christian woman is completly wrong it's fabulous and perfect for the song, a mixture of contempt, derision and mockery filtered through a camp Dylanesque Blues drawl; perfect for the character of Lucifer, 'a man of wealth and taste.'

      Whatever point of view you take on this, it has to be said that it certainly makes you reflect on your own behaviour, and spreading that out further to our leaders! well you can easily see how influenced we can be, manipulation is easy for them, i´ll give you freedom, most of what you believe you want, Go on have a gamble-you could become rich, so whilst we are all hoping and praying ´´ It could be me ´´ they will continue to play their game, that´s the nature of the game, so when they decide to put a gun in the hand of a uniformed member of your family, and tell you the other side want to stop you from receiving all these goodies, just remember, your new found enemy have received the same advice, but it is you and yours that will suffer the consequences, we have always been factory or army fodder, therein lays the evil.

    The devil didn’t do anything, he just watched as we committed the atrocities and then blamed it on him. The whole song is basically the devil pointing out the arrogance of man and how we commit some of the worst crimes and then say “the devil made me do it” he’s just saying “no… i didn’t, you did it all on your own” also he is pointing out the hypocrisy of religion or god, who has had more people killed in his name than the devil ever could, so… who’s the real evil one? A demon who watches or an angel that interferes?

      @DaveHagi Thanks Dave! I'm familiar with a bit of Zappa, and am in awe of his creative genius. I have had a difficult time spending much time with his music though, simply based on the theatrical and almost jokey nature it presents. With that being said, I do not know "Dumb all Over" and considering it's a recommendation, would love to check it out. Thanks again for watching and sharing your thoughts. If you want to understand Britain - listen to our music and our humour, but don't take anything literally, if you want to understand America ... I don't know, maybe they haven't found themselves yet... this was a hard watch for me but I commend you for stepping outside your comfort zone; for watching and trying to get to grips with it - to me it's a song that simply says yes there is a devil - it's every action that inflicts pain and misery (rather than a mystical being)

    • @ddubsnbstar835
      @ddubsnbstar835  Před 2 lety

      @KayHardy Thanks Kay. Being the Non-Christian in the duo, I tend to agree with your analysis as well. Not so much a mystical being, but an energy driven by humanity. (Hoping that I got what you said there... lol) I have spent some time with British music and humour, but I'm certainly no scholar. Not enough to say I understand Britain. To me, Britain is overshadowed by "the Empire" and in that regard, the US sort of took over that. However, I know that both are way more than that, and that mindset is only a small representation of a much larger entity, with may more to offer than that stain in history.
      In spite of the challenge it presented, thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts with us!! - Ddubs

    As a religious person (Catholic), I heard this song in the 1970. I was stunned by not only the music but the complexity of this lyrics itself! It’s totally the opposite of what people said about, The Rolling Stones? The lyrics seems more of a prophecy, if we humans don’t change our ways?!? The song is technically saying what Lucifer’s Job “is” and it’s to “tempt” people… God’s judges peoples souls from their free will, that makes the Sins or not.?. Lucifer became a jealous Son. Lucifer A creation by God himself! He so loved Lucifer like a “father to a son.” It would have been a Great opportunity for Lucifer (Satan), to show God mankind’s weakness to all their sins! Lucifer jealous of Gods love for “Mankind!” God so distrust mankind gave them an opportunity to change by sending his only begotten son ‘Jesus! Jesus was crucified but he still believed in the goodness of Mankind! For Lucifer it’s the total opposite. It’s like the story of 2 sons, just like Cain and Able? 2 sons struggles to earn Gods love?!? One who loved everything God created the other wanting to prove to God ‘what mankind is really like. Mankind who’s capable of breaking the 1st Sin, eating the forbidden fruit of knowledge. Isn’t this song in a religious perspective? Technically God knowing all, gave Lucifer that job and all the Devil’s job is to influence mankind into the desires of every SINS, IAW, the Bible’s 10 Commandments???

      what a thoughtful response! I hadn't thought of it all in that way exactly before. Yes Satan is doing God's work too, just like he did with Job. And yes it was prophetic because we have all succumb to Satan so much more now that we can't see it. -BStar

    "This is a very satanic band called The rolling Stones" ! So on the basis of ONE song (which by the way is not glorifying the aforementioned mythical being) you decide a band is Satanic! Take a listen to 'She's a Rainbow' Wild Horses' or 'Angie' never mind their other huge hits and tell me you stick by that very rash statement!
