The best way is to get a private diagnosis from a paychiatrist (not gendergp because GPs don't tend to trust them). Then get an endocrinologist appointment privately and then your GP should be happy to prescribe. Self medicating is not illegal and most trans people do a little bit here and there. I did for a couple of years before I even came out to most people but I understand your trepidation. For me at the time I was desperate and fighting to find a way to stay alive. For self medicating you have options of online pharmacies and homebrewed hormones and I would trust online pharmacies over the other. Waiting lists for GICs are ridiculously long, some are over ten years. The best thing to do if you want nhs care is to try to get onto one of the pilot schemes though I believe these are also hard to get onto as you have to have had confirmation you are on a GIC list (and not have already had your first appointment) and places are limited. I think some are better than others and it depends on where you live to which one you can use. I hope you find a way forward.

i have been on the GIC list for three years , after phone them to be informed i have to wait a further three years before my first appointment, like you i am getting on. private is the best way forward, i went with Gender GP two years ago and yes you got to pay out but its private medical and you don't have to wait six year or more, good luck

If you do go private, will you still be under a doctor's care? I completely agree April, that you should not DIY this! I know some gals do, but it's very dangerous if you don't know absolutely what you are doing. Estrogen (or even Testosterone) interacts with so many other hormones in the body and too much or too little can throw the other hormones out of whack! I know your finances are tight right now with you and your wife splitting, but, at some point, and I;m not sure if the U.K. allows this, but here in the States, I can self pay and avoid the paperwork of health insurance. Luckily, my job has afforded me the finances (so many others can't) that I have paid out of pocket for my HRT, my Electrolysis, and my voice therapy. I only went to health insurance to ask to pay for my Facial Surgery and now, my Gender Confirmation Surgery. Hang in there Hon'!
