23 Sega Arcade Games with Outrun-like Pseudo 3D Graphics

  • While Sega enjoyed significant success with games developed for it’s System 16 hardware platform, Shinobi and Golden Axe were far from the most sophisticated games on the block.
That honour is reserved for games comprising Sega’s high-end, Super Scaler series of arcade titles, games which made extensive use of 2D sprites to create 3D-like effects and environments.
Originally conceived and developed by programmer and producer Yu Suzuki, these games proved to be so advanced that no home console of the day had the power to recreate the experience of these custom boards.
Why use sprites in such fashion? Well, true 3D rendering required significant processing power to achieve even the most basic of wire-frame constructs, especially given the tools and software available in the mid 80s. The super scaler technology is, in some respects, an ingenious solution - cheat even - to the problem of creating convincing 3D in a world that wasn’t quite ready for it.
This video covers the best arcade games in the use of Sega's super scaler technology. A game curation showcasing the capabilities of each iteration of Sega's innovative pseudo-3D technology
In this video you will find:
    • A game curation with featuring the best looking Sega Super Scaler Games
    • Information related to each game such as release date, developer company, game genre and system it was released on.
    • Official game box arts with a 3D presentation.
    • Educative and/or critical comments on the importance of the video game and why you should play it

⚠️ All gameplay recording, game curation and opinions included in this video, as well as editing is completely done by me
Bits & Beats creates videos about the history of video games. In this channel you'll find comparisons, retrospectives, technical analysis, but, mostly, game curations with the idea of having an important task of preserving video games, and make them relevant to society at large.
Curation isn't just about digging up neat games, but it's also about preservation, interpretation, and using one's knowledge to make it relevant to people. With my videos I want older gamers to look back and remember the influence of video games on their lives, and new gamers to understand the larger context of the series they're playing for the first time today.
I put significant time and creative effort into each one of my videos, including research, digging into archives, playing video games and recording hours of footage, selecting specific clips, writing reviews for each title, and making a very careful video editing in the way to transmit both educational and entertaining values to my audience. Every video takes a lot of hours to produce, because I strive to give my audience a consistent, high-quality content.
Fidelity and preservation of the video games is essential in Bits & Beats, so the recordings are made with the highest bitrate quality. It is done this way to preserve original game look and sound through modern footage, with no superfluous additions. I recommend you watch the video at 4K and 60 frames per second to get the best possible viewing experience.
I hope you enjoy my videos and find them useful!

These games were so immersive to me....as a kid. It's easy to look at these as outdated since they are, but for the time this was state of the art. I put a lot of tokens/quarters in many of these growing up.

I consider Sega's Super Scaler games to be among the most beautiful games ever created, with Power Drift, After Burner, and Galaxy Force being notable standouts.

I have to disagree with you re Turbo outrun..
It is true to say the original is a objectively better playing game with more inuitive handling, and branching paths, but Turbo's sprite-tile assets are more detailed with the game being a sequel, and with a more advanced use of color also.
If the position of the F-40 and the oncoming road was more visible like O.G Outrun, with a few tweaks it could've been a much better game, although it did introduce the titular use of a Turbo, Car upgrades, and the awesome rival system reused in Outrun 2, and lastly like O.G has a fantastic soundtrack.
    Cool video despite my quibble.
    Cheers.

Outruns definitely a classic. First one and Outrunners were good I agree. Turbo was alright. Dark Edge I always felt was more of an almost FPS fighter the way it zoomes in and put where VF was fully 3D in terms of movement. One thing that VF never gets credit for is when people talk full 3d side stepping fluid movement I feel VF was the first 3d fighter to introduce that element but people I've noticed over the years think Tekken started it because of being more popular. I do feel that Dark Edge was the I inspiration for VF for sure and kind of segas more prototype, primitive attempt at 3D then they made VF. Cool vid man.

Why would you show horribly buggy Title Fight footage from MAME instead of from the original PCB? It's so broken in MAME it doesn't even look like the game.
