Season 3 of You has been a big hit, and on this Doctor REACTS video I'm going all the way back to episode 1 of season 1 to analyze Joe's creepy stalking behaviour. There is lots of relevance to forensic psychiatry here, and one of the biggest puzzles to figure out is whether a mental illness is present or not, and if and how much this or a persons personality contributes to this behaviour. Joe is so narcissistic and self-deluded that each season it's what stands out most. He rationalizes everything he does as something caused by someone else and something he had no choice of doing.
I couldn't believe his delusion when he goes apeshit on Love...............for the exact things she did that he's been doing for years.

As a guy, one of the most disturbing things that I didn't know is how often women have to deal with men being creeps to them. Maybe it's not as extreme as this guy, but they can have creepy encounters multiple times a week or day.
Yeah. And it's not just encountering weird creepy dudes; I've had sketchy guys try to follow me home more than once. Easily some of the most terrifying experiences of my life.
It not just women, it's girls I had creeps go after me when I wasn't even an adult
As a dude one of the creepiest things that ever happenes to me was falling asleep drunk at a house party and woke up with some weird girl dry humping my leg on the couch. She smelled like coors lite and was cross eyed. That put things into perspective, lemmy tell ya what...

My ex-bf has stalked me for years. This show actually helped me a bit. One of the worst things about being stalked is how there is no logic in it. Any sane person would stop. So to see the wrapping of logic, justification, and lack of personal responsibility in Joe helped me to understand my ex's crazy. It also reminded me to occasionally Google and Bing myself to make sure he can't find me.

I hope he doesn't find you. There was a young horse rider in England who was stalked, she told the police but he killed her and then killed himself. She barely even knew him, such a tragic waste of life.
as someone who expreiced both side, being stalked/harrassed and having the potential of stalking others should give you the self swareness about yourself. yes, it wasnt your fault for being stalked or other things but there is logic behind it, illogical thoughts can occurs illogical behavours and we all have illogical thoughts so in another life, you could be the stalker too so.
Recently a loved one began to receive threats online and it became clear they were being stalked by someone who had fixated upon them some years ago. The troubling issue isn't only the stalker's psychological instability and fixation but the tendency by police not to take stalking seriously particularly when it occurs online. I hope you can get despite from the ex'bf.

Exactly! Aware to the point of paranoia! For our own safety we have to remember that we don't owe others any information about ourselves (whether we live alone, where, etc)
So happy you decided to look at this series, Joe is such an amazing character to analyse
This show is at it's best when it goes 100% off the rails. And that happens more and more in later seasons. S1 is pretty tame compared to 3 and even 2.
What's funny for me in season 3 is how Joe is comparatively good in his behavior to earlier seasons
Would love to see you react to more of the series! It's disturbing to see how Joe worms into people's lives without them even realizing it. There is definitely some interesting psychological issues that come into play in seasons 2 and 3 as well.
I think the most disturbing part of it all is the way he rationalizes everything. The way, in his mind, he's not just a good guy, but a great guy. He's going through all the extra effort to protect someone, after all! And he's always so... calm about it. So calm that it almost sounds rational until you realize how incredibly creepy and delusional and uncomfortable it all is.

I recently had an online conversation with women and men about an incident, where a young woman and a man briefly met at a post office. They didn't know each other and she was only speaking one or two sentences to him, totally smalltalk. Half a year (!) later, she found a note on her car from this man, who, just recently, noticed her car in traffic. Which means, after the encounter in the post office, he followed her, saw her car and remembered her car tag. So he was in traffic, too, saw her car and IMMEDIATELY followed her until she stopped. He then waited until she went into the house and left the note on her car with his number, saying he wanted to go on a date with her.
So when we talked about this behavior I was literally shocked about how many men AND women find this totally acceptable. With men primarily saying "How else should he have approached her?" and women primarily saying "This is so romantic and charming!" I was baffled. Like... They only met for a few minutes, barely speaking to each other and half a year later he still remembered her car tag, followed her instantly (and secretly) to her home and didn't even give her the chance to notice him or see his face. Because she definitely didn't even remember his face and was highly irritated.
Throughout the conversation there were plenty of men saying that it was totally okay to follow a woman they're interested in, because "How else should I get to know her?" Well, how about speaking to her? But no, that would be weird, they said. After all they don't know each other. But secretly following someone is okay, it's not like you want to murder her or do her any harm, you just want to get some information, where she lives, and so on, without asking her, without giving her the chance to consent... I asked them "Would you say it to her face that you're now about to follow her?" The men were repulsed and thought this would be psychopatic. But they had no problem with following her secretly.
Another guy even said he used to secretly sit in his car in front of the houses of the women he fancied, for HOURS, just to look at them and feel near to them and he couldn't see anything wrong with that kind of behavior. When I criticited it, he wanted to be pitied because he is "just shy" and "didn't know what else to do" and if you critizied people for secretly following others and observe them, you "deny them ther sexuality and their sexual needs".
Another disturbing part was how many women in this discussion found the note on the car to be cutely romantic and completely ignored the fact that he was impulsively and secretly following her, driven by a brief encounter half a year ago. At the same time there was a parallel discussion about women being, or being more accurate, feeling followed on the streets in the middle of the night, where the same women demanded men should be signalling that they're harmless when they happen to take the same way as them.
So, bottom line: "Feeling" followed felt dangerous to them, but being actually followed to their homes by a stranger is "romantic, charming and brave."

that is horrifying in so many ways. also isn't the obvious answer to "how else should i get to know her?" just that you need to make more of a connection at the initial meeting and let it go if you don't, or better yet just leave her alone? women existing in public, minding their business, just making a bit of small talk and being polite is not an invitation for anything. that is so crazy.
@@shaynapunim As far as I remember, a lot of the guys in this conversation said, they just didn't want to miss the chance. They couldn't bear the thought of missing out. They see a woman, they are immediately interested, they HAVE to find out all about her - without starting an eye to eye conversation, because this might result in immediate rejection.
I remember one guy saying "What if this could be the love of his life?" - like ... what? A random woman and you're already thinking about love?
I don't know, but being that obsessed with a person you barely know and just saw briefly ... it's just creepy.
I personally don't think it's in any way normal if you're stressed out be the thought of not getting to know a random stranger.

Oh God, I felt that as knots in my stomach. I've had a couple of stalkery moments with exes, where they turned up lurking in the shadows outside my house, or left "love" notes in my garage while I was out, especially after I made it very clear I didn't want them to contact me ever again. It was only a couple of times, and not something I would've reported, but it certainly made me feel unsafe, and I was glad once I moved house.
Basically it boils down to breaching a person's personal space without their consent.
Yes, all of their reactions deeply troubling. As for the women who thought that this behavior was romantic, I wonder if it has to do with all of the unhealthy messages we are fed from cartoons onward of romantic courtship that are actually very toxic and non-consensual (Pepe Le Pew, Sleeping Beauty, etc). So much internalized misogyny, as if it's an honor to be reduced to an object that is solely meant to fulfill the desires of male egos. It makes me think they are a bit sheltered and haven't had been victim to stalking, assault, etc
I really liked your comment about how the behaviour of this character, as pervasive as it is, points more towards his personality than any distinct mental illness or disorder.
It's a truth that the media often ignores, that mentally ill people are far more at risk of violence than they are of being perpetrators of violence.
And while it can be tempting to explain horrible behaviour away by pointing to an illness or disorder... Some people are just horrible, awful, despicable human beings who view themselves as the lone hero in a world of disposable NPCs. And that is far far scarier than any "mentally ill psycho" that TV or movies can throw at us.
This distinction is so interesting and it seems important, given how much reporting and public messaging tends to default to casting mental illness as the cause of violence, etc. I am really curious about what it means in terms of the personality itself, since it's not a reflection of a mental illness. It opens up a whole range of questions to unpack - like, what even is personality? I wish I'd studied psychology...

I work in the hospitality industry as an assistant manager in a big chain coffee shop. It's my job to build rapports with customers, be polite, friendly and give good service. Unfortunately, as a young woman, it had lead me to have not one, but three stalkers in the 8 years I've been doing my job! Weird creepy guys take me doing my job and being friendly as me being into them. So, for me, this was a vey interesting thing to watch you react to and analyse.

I love this series. Always leaves me with so many conflicting emotions, it's creepy in a way very few other series have been for me. As it's from the narrators perspective you can't help but see things from Joe's perspective and it just leaves you feeling gross.
I hope you do more of this series, as the season goes on they touch on so many areas of metal health and would be interested how realistically it's done.
100% this. It almost makes you feel like, sometimes, you understand everything and it all makes sense for a moment, until you think about it and realize it's actually all delusional, creepy, and terrifying. So uncomfortable.
Yep, what I find scary is the people that go out thier way to defend Joe after the fact on the Subreddit. "Yeah but his motives were good." I get buying into Joe's inner voice in the moment but after the fact. Kind of scary.

You have to keep watching!!! Season 2 and season 3 get increasingly bizarre and some people think too unrealistic so interesting to see your reaction.

There's a line in the book when Joe sees Beck's place for the first time, where he mentions how he fantasizes about putting bars on her windows. So much crazy shit was said in the book that should have been put into the show but wasn't.
I 100% want to see videos on all the episodes of this show. There is so much to unpack. It’s one of the reasons I actually love the show. You can choose to watch it as pulpy, soapy mush, but there’s a lot more interesting pieces of subtlety on how “normal” people rationalize a whole spectrum of toxic behaviour as well as social commentary on who gets to be considered “normal” in the first place by society at large.
I'd never heard of this show. I'm not sure I could watch a full episode of this. His behavior just gave me so much anxiety. I really appreciated your reaction and analysis, though. Always glad for one of your videos!
It's definitely heavy handed. Especially as the seasons go on, it goes off the rails but it's a good show if you decide to watch the rest. I would like to see this guy's reaction to Joe's later relationships lol
His whole narcissistic personality is why I find the show so intriguing. I like watching and analyzing messed up people lol. But at some point it just become too much and I had to take a break.

I couldn't watch You because the renationalisation and assuming meaning from random stuff (like her not wearing a bra) reminds me way too much my sexually and emotionally abusive ex and my thought process when im getting ready to go outside, questioning everything im wearing wondering if its going to put me in danger with guys like him who think women do everything for a man's attention.

I’d definitely like to see a reaction to “I’m thinking of ending things” purely because of how weird and expansive it is and how it’s entirely a view into a complex mind and the disorders behind it. Might be somewhat slow for a CZcams crowd but a reaction with snippets could work. Especially the part at the parents house and jumbled events.

One of the things I loved about the show is the music. Something that seems romantic in other movies is now underlined with that electric heart beat like… I don’t know how to describe it, it’s creepy and shows the true nature of stalking and obsessions.

If you keep watching the series and seasons, you'll see that this is closer to OCD than anything. He wants to live in a perfect relationship above anything. Since nothing is perfect, he will keep searching for it endlessly, and doing anything to achieve that, like people washing their hands to get rid of dirt. In this case, he will murder as many as it is necessary to keep relationships out of dirty. He is not quite narcissist, this will become clear as he blames himself when frustrated (specially in season 3). There are many, many patterns of OCD. The perfect panning is part of the compulsion, collecting clothes is also related to this.
This is definitely not OCD.

@@shiararuiz5171 so, in Season 3 he sees himself constantly blaming himself. What bugs him is that nothing is perfect. There is no perfect love and this search for perfection is compulsive. You can see that in the other seasons, but in the third one this is more pronounced. And I like Joe, lol, because I want him to overcome the odds.

Hey, great analysis. I love the first season of the show, as I find shows that are told through an unusual POV character fascinating.
I know this might be outside of your comfort zone since it's anime, but I really recommend the show Kaguya-sama: Love is War. It's a rom-com about 2 teenagers who are in love, but don't want to admit it since they think whoever confesses first will be the submissive one in the relationship. So they construct scenarios that will make the other confess first. Its very popular so you shouldn't really have a problem getting views. Even just the first episode I think has plenty to talk about.

After that he thought I had a crush on him for some reason and he would buy me gifts and it came to the point where he would follow me home from school and it was a real big issue lucky I'm okay 🎉
hi Elliot, a new show has dropped on Netflix with its current 6 episodes (last 3 episodes will drop the 20'th). One of the main characters have severe PTSD and have some kind of issue with ... (I forgot the name for it, but the one where you hear voices). It's called Arcane and is a show exploring origins of characters you can play as in the game League of Legends. I would love for you to check it out and possibly give your thoughts on the mental illness side.

I tend to really enjoy things that give the audience a view into the perspective of someone participating in deviant behavior so we may have a better understanding of it but it’s a fine line between exploration and normalization/justification.

dexter displayed far too much unrealistic empathy and emotion to be labeled as a socio or psychopath by a real life doctor. dexter may as well be a unicorn but people do have fun putting him in their boxes.

I'm glad you did this one, I thought the show was so close to being a great depiction of stalking and abuse in a way that could educate people, but then they shifted gears at the last minute and sensationalized it.
Would love to see you do Sex Education! There's some great clinical moments and some not so great ones with sex therapy, but overall it's a stellar show!
Do you intend to do any more videos covering House MD soon? I know the show is terribly inaccurate, and as I've been starting my Biomedical Sciences study I've had more and more issues watching through it lol, but it's still a really cool show I think for these types of videos. It brings up a lot of "stereotypical" views people would have of medicine and doctors.
