  • Sometimes less is more, I’ve built hundreds of vans in my career to fulfil the dreams of every style of traveller. The weekend warrior- the global traveller- the photographer who is looking for the next perfect shot. Hunters, fishermen, soccer moms, and family getaway machines. It’s hard to argue that the Volkswagen Camper van isn’t the original expedition vehicle, and just maybe the ultimate one as well!

What a nice setup, seems like so much fun to travel with that everything compact all in its place. Thanks for sharing

Good morning from Orange County, Indiana. Tonight, we will be staying with the Amish community in Mayslick Kentucky. I often find myself on short three - and four day road trips. This trip is a family going to see family while all the youngsters are out of school.

Thanks Howard, it’s a great little rig for sure. Have the fires out west affected you at all?

Thanks for the van tour. Did you build the cabinets? I’ve owned several VW busses over the years and have always wanted a synchro van built like yours. Can’t wait to see the build process of your next adventure vehicle.

Those cabinets all came from my shop here. I had a friend build them over the course of a few weeks in his spare time. They turned out really well.

I find it very disappointing, at the. Lack of diesel powerd small autos in the USA. Simply your van was not sold with that diesel in the usa best I know.
    .
I'm working on a project to put a 4JB1-TC or 2.8L in a isuzu trooper.
Otherwise known as a JDM engine.
It's about as close to a bolt in as you can get, literally turn transmission bracket around and holes are all ready in it ready to use.
Being direct injection with no engine computer, they basically sound like a road legal tractor LOL.
    .
I've found there was actually a 2 tank version sold in Australia, a long 2 door version in the 80s. Better suited for doing a 2 tank vegetable oil fuel system.
    .
    gearing is a challenge, I have 4 choices from 4.77 to 4.11
Definitely makes it a good state highway, federal speed limit auto. freeways not so much.
    .
Anyway very nice job on it, definitely worth more then I could pay.

My van wasn’t diesel from new. I swapped it to the VW TDi when I built it. I used to have a Trooper back a hundred years ago- I thought it was a practical suv to have when I was raising my family… it had a 2.6 I think?

@thelogfather5002 1988/1991 yes 2.6L or gm 2.8L v6. also first efi gas years.
1992 was the start of the full redesign, and no more I-4 engines in north America.
      84/85 was the 1.9L and 4sp
      86/87 was the 2.3 or very rare 2.2 T/D.
No automatics in 4wds 1987 and older.
      .
      Total nerd fact, LOL.
The very rare short 2 door 1989 RS.
has the claim of first 100% stock auto, to cover the jeep Rubicon trail with nothing but tire pressure adjustment.
That model was only sold with the 2.6 engine, no gm 4L30-e nonsense automatic or gm v6.
