I can’t believe the magnitude of this film. The acting is phenomenal. I’m so glad it was here. I had no idea.
Antony Hopkins is one of the greatest actors. I‘m german and can’t quite understand all the words, but his charisma is particularly impressive. I think he is the best living actor of our time.
No need to fully understand the languege../ enough to watch This Giant ! ... Best regards from Bucarest ROMANIA 💐
As an American, I often watch British shows with subtitles as some of the accents are really difficult to understand. But Ian is such a good actor it didn't take away from the performance.
I agree he has such gravitas....dont know that word in German
Him and Richard Burton they where both from the same village
He never looks like he is acting. He makes it look so easy and has a way of drawing the viewer into every line.
Astounding perfomances by Anthony Hopkins and Ian McKellen, this version won a Golden Globe, adapted from the stage, Bravo!!!
What a wonderful movie, like a good book , it's a keeper.
They don't make movies like it anymore... Such brilliance of script and acting.
Thank you for sharing.
Turning the play within a play motif inside out! Wonderful film that just so happened to be seen by me at a time in my life when every line of dialogue, every subtle epiphany, all the superb acting resonated so deeply and intimately with private reveries of my own. Thank you so much for making this available on CZcams.
Oh.. God give him a long time in Order to enjoy watching this Titan of Arts... Anthony Hopkins! ❤ Bless HIM!
British all-star thespians in one project...
Hopkins
McKellen
Kirby, Vanessa
Fox, James
Watson, Emily
Top notched cast
I would never label this a 'Drama Comedy'.
I mean, sure, there's humor, but not at all to the level of comedy.
This is straight-up epic (tho quiet) drama. 2 men finding their truth...
What a cast! Love Emily Watson..there just isn't a part she cannot play❤
I know the other " Dresser" which won an Oscar.
I am only five minutes in and this looks as fabulous. Its Thanksgiving and I am alone. But.. Wonderful, I am not alone anymore..😊❤❤❤
Have had such Holidays with solitude, some quite happily, to my surprise. Hope your day was good. 🙏
Tom Courtenay was in the original I belive.
@@lulumoon6942 quite also which is wonderful at my age..
Im glad you enjoyed yourself..😊
@@lulumoon6942 quiet..😂
of all of Anthony Hopkins roles...in my humble opinion this is one of his best performances ..it shows how diverse the acting range he has and like a fine wine ..he seems to get better with age... a very fine performance indeed...I will now watch the original to see how it compares ...I applaud whoever picks these movies for CZcams as they really have chosen some rare gems...give that person a raise in salary as they deserve it...keep up the excellent film choices...aloha to all and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family and friends ....Dean in Hawaii
Yes 😻😻🥳♥️
He was always just great, and the movies he chose were always very good, except the most famous one. I hated Silence Of The Lambs.
That "dresser"... What a character... Very loyal to the "king" ... Maybe too much, sometimes...
This is a wonderful BBC version after of course the original film. The play that it’s based on ran successfully in both London and Broadway. And even more to its credit the writer based it on his own experience working for a great Shakespearean actor. This is deep and wide and full of humanity of all sorts.
What a masterpiece. I am so glad I watched these exceptional artist at their best.
Ian Mc Kellen, Anthony Hopkins - could watch them forever!
Superb actors & actress's.. This was wonderfully well done with Anthony, Ian & Emily, rare talents indeed. Simply superb! More please.
I'm really glad this one was posted. The original was one of my favorite movies of all time. Only Anthony Hopkins could have outdone Albert Finney in this role.
"... outdone" is a strong sentiment. The original will always be the standard.
Superb and mesmerizing… both Sir Anthony and Sir Ian , it was a privilege and a pleasure to watch.
A truly talented, perfectly cast production 👏👏👏
(what happened to the end credits.?)
He didn't outdo him, he was different. Equally compelling.
With such gems life is worth living❤
Some of my favourite actors.
Was like going to the theater.
Amusingly, the moment 31m in where he says « I like to be certain » and gives a smile that is no smile - pure Hannibal Lecter 😅
Great writing. Great acting. Great actors. Good little story ! Charming ! Bravo !!!! Thank you ! My brain thanks you !!! ❤ 🙏
Amazin 😻😻🥳
Wow wow wow … what a cast … how come I had missed this movie … thank you for sharing it …
Such wonderful actors. I feel nostalgic for England just full of talented people
steady on
A Deep look inside misterious minds of actors & actresses...❤
Anthony Hopkins is in this film..I believe that sums it up.
Absolute gem…wonderful acting by all…as a Welsh Woman 🏴 maybe I am biased but Sir Anthony was superb 👏👏👏
He is fab as was Richard Burton....such Welsh passion....and spirit
What a joy... A new Masterpiece of old long gone British cinema! ❤❤❤❤ My regards from Bucarest ROMANIA 💐🤗🌹 What a marvaleous cast! ../ starting with Sir Anthony Hopkins....😊

A beautiful movie with fine acting b y Anthony Hopkins!
Difference between legendary actors : Once John Wayne was required to read a poem.He started with monotenous voice : To be or not be , that is the question ......he stopped and replyied. " Who wrote this crap ? "
John Wayne was one of the worse actors ever. I don't know how people thought he was good.
@@jimmie200you've lost your mind,he was every character.
It was his way in real life.
You must be a youngster.
lack of taste, lack of experience, lack of exposure to quality. It's easy to think of John Wayne as an icon. Ya just have to be American.@@jimmie200
@@jimmie200 I just planned to say exactly that! Word for word! A few days ago I saw his name on 1 list of the 100 best actors ever, and on another of the 20 best ever. I was just so appalled! He was like an emotionless peice of stone. IMHO, one of the WORST actors ever!
@@howlinwulf I'm 64and I think John Wayne stunk as an actor. One of the very worst ever.
I saw the one with Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay. Never knew this version existed.
The Albert Finney/Tom Courtenay film from 1983, also posted on CZcams, has accurate captioning.
It’s particularly rewarding to watch both versions to appreciate the differences in the script.
The scripts are pretty much the same, although with different cuts to the original play. I'm fascinated by the differences in the actor's interpretations.
Much as I love the Finney, Courtney version, this is a fine production, greatly enjoyed it. At the great line « O reason not the need! » I seemed to get some dust in my eye. And the reveal that the Fool was played by Edward Fox (no opening credits) was a jaw-dropping bonus. Many thanks for posting.
Fox was in the 1983 film playing Oxenby.
What great performances from the cast. McKellen in particular is superb
You mean gandalf 😊🎉
Totally agree Mckellan was phenomenal.
There really are no people more self important than actors!
Not secure but gifted
Politicians and bad teachers and professors are all more self important. Also young Instagram and CZcams stars.
@@cattymajiv OK. Change that to political drama lecturers.
Definitely as good as the original film. Sublime performances
You can always tell good movies: the actors really smoke (if the character does) and they have there own hair. Needed have in this movie.
I saw another version of this with Albert Finney and Tom Courtney both have great British actors, it's great British theatre about theatre and unravelling emotions 👏
Por favor, está con el mismo título? Se puede encontrar en CZcams? Me ayudarías mucho con esos datos, pues solo tengo CZcams, nada más, y soy anciana con movilidad restringida. Gracias
@@gloriasalas2237 Did you find it? I hope so. Several people have said it is on CZcams, but none said if the name or title is the same or not. (I too have reduced mobility.) ❤
I could here my theatherteacher scream :"The Show must go on!!!!"
hear...
Brillaint version of this play...I've only seen it on stage so its fun to see a tv version with such a great cast..last time i saw it on a stage, it had Ken Stott & Reece Shearsmith in it..always seems to attract the best actors to it!
The opening scene is utterly compelling ! What convincing acting ! But then again, the cast…!
Next time someone says to me "You want your cake and eat it', I'll have an answer for them.
True 😻😻🥳
As much as I think Sir Anthony is one of our great talents, the 1983 version, although different in many ways to this version, is my preference.
I have only just this moment discovered your posting. I feel like a child on christmas morning. Thank you. Excited with anticipation and certain of delight, I'm pleased to have the chance to see
this production and how it may capture something close to the theatre experience. Ah. the lights are dimming, so here I go
Thanks! I just remembered that I had STARZ! No commercials! Great Cast!
Sir is the most special actor ever❤
Drama yes comedy no !!! Great acting.
Drama yes. As an actor I cant imagine playing during wartime. Grate acting by these pilars on stage.
The sound was good for me. Had no probleem following
The Brits did their best to live normal lives as much as they could with daily bombing. My mum was a little girl in London during the Blitz.
Never seen such SD movie in a long time ommg what a performance bbravo
They are humans too...
Thank You, thank you, i love Emily Watson, She's the best!!!!
The original with Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay was great!
Аgree !!! Albert Finney is the best!👍
@@rayguffey7593 My fave Finney performance was in Two For The Road with Audrey Hepburn. Courtenay was excellent as Pasha Antipov aka Strelnikov in Dr Zhivago.
I love both films. I don’t have a favourite.
Absolutely amazing that folks could go to see plays during WWII.
rorever
whatever not ???? I am a just post war generation and I know my 20 year old mother did the same things all young people in the occupied Europe did , had dates, met for swims in summer, even had parties as young people do. People need to live. However, they also did their fight against the invaders risking their lives. Most of my mother's friends died but still she did have the same experiences youg people get being young
Life goes on, in spite of war.
Moral
Extraordinary efforts made by the people of Britain.
@@Kimllg88 Very much so! Truly heroic! And it all began in defense of Poland! Yet now Poland and Estonia are almost the only ones who are willing to help Ukraine!

It must have been cheap to make. Just a few rooms and a few people. Theatre people might like this.
Many of the very best movies I've seen were like that. They would have been equally good as a play. All the best movies are the ones where the majority of the story takes place in your head.
Of course beautiful scenery greatly enhances the experience, but you can get by without great scenery. You can't get by without a great plot, character development, and acting.
I love the original with Albert Finney
Oh my .I need to watch that also .
With the wonderful Tom Courtenay as Norman.

Why do people who upload films insist on cutting off the beginning and end? Heathens
All real movie buffs despise that! And if it's done to evade copyright strikes, as some people have suggested, it's completely ineffective!
Mesmerizing performances. Superb.
King Lear protecting England at its darkest hours ... !
Excellent.
Remarkable, pure theatre, throughly enjoyable, watching the best at their best.
Great version, thanks for posting.👍
The actor who plays Irene here, is in the Netflix series, The Crown, as Princess Margaret. She’s a beautiful teenage girl, and already a good actor, here.
Magnificent !!!!

Thank you.
A stellar cast upended by stagnant direction and confused editing.
Thank you ❤
Excellent

Very good, though I thought the Finney / Courtney version better.
Could be becuase you saw that one first, it's often the case the first time you experience something , becuase ut's new the conclusion is that it's the superior one.
Anthony Hopkins playing Klaus Kinski.

This is a very good production but not as wonderful as the original.
Agree. Nothing could match Finney and Courteney
Brilliant, but too soft for my poor hearing &, lo & behold, some Subtitles from a non-English-speaker, AI or someone more hard of hearing than me. Sad & appalling!

I've got on Dvd "The Dresser" with Albert Finney.. And it's such a wonderful film. I knew about this one as well.. But according to the critics, Peter Yates film is much better than this one. would love to see, but the volume is way too low unfortunately
Bluetooth helps.
So do head phones and/or earphones. But it drives me nuts that that problem is SO COMMON on CZcams that you can virtually not use YT without them, and when music or ads come on your head and ears get blasted off! I will certainly be deaf 10 years sooner because of it!
If ads can be so goddam loud, why can't the videos? And classic movies are the worst of all!
This television version is very rare and I'm sure many would like to see it... BUT nothing will stop you cutting the credits off...
you say it is "under legal license from various copyright holders" so why not show it unbutchered!?
For goodness sake, google it!!!!
Fyi some of these movie channels are CZcams sites!!!!
Why don't you part with your money for Netflix, Disney!!;???

Living in the newest separated continent, at plays end the Brit How Did I Do Actore, was regally recalled through his echoing voice from my viewing past, perhaps bi-centurial, not so a necessary fill in.
No Brasil o título é 'O Fiel Camareiro'.
I think that instead of "waiter" a better word is probably "server", which can be used to mean many different types of things, including waiting or being a waiter.
