Literally had this just happened to me tonight in the hotel.
What worked for me with limited resources in my situation was gently knocking on one side of the drain stopper so that the opposite side will raise up a bit. However instead of using floss to go around the stopper, I used a safety pin to gently pull it up. Thanks for inspiring me to solve the problem :)

Saved me 100 euros in plumber fee.

Mate, you’re a life saver. Had to do it slightly different though but pretty much did the wood tapping trick and it worked. Had no piece of wood but used a couple of chopsticks held together and no hammer but a pair of pliers as a hammering substitute. Also, I emptied the sink (had to use a towel to soak up the last of it) but the plug was just jammed in there, so I refilled it with hot water and tried it again, tapping the chopsticks with the side of the pliers aaand bingo, it popped up. Thank you mate, for making this vid. Cheers.

Here's another solution that I just used myself- If you have a floss pick instead of dental floss, you can use pointed end of the pick to slide it through the gap and pop it up a little. Then you should be able to use the floss end to pry it up the rest of the way, though that may take some struggling.

Great video and a great service to everyone with this problem.
    Thanks for posting it.
While these tips didn't work for me, I did get it un stuck.
Note: Mine was stuck hard. There was no turning it.
Here's what worked for me, as nothing else did....
    Pro Tip:
I got a sink plunger The blue one with several ribs on the plunger..... Yep, that's the one.
I pressed it down and then popped it up as quick as I could. The first couple of times it just barely raised the stopper, but after the third time, it popped it up. I then stuck it again to see if it could do it on the first try, and it will. You just have to get a good pop out of it.
Note: While my stopper wouldn't turn at first, after using the plunger to barely pop it up, it probably would have turned from that point on....
What I found was the reason my stopper was sticking is because I had it tightened down all the way on the threads (not tool tight, but hand tight). That was too much for the poor machining tolerances and that caused it to bind when pressed down.
So now I just barely loosen the threads on the stopper and it will open and close no problem.
Now if any of y'all are into bees, head on over to my channel and let's have some more fun.

Thank you for this video, and thank you all for leaving your comments, sharing your experience. Mine was very stuck. Was discouraged at first, but then seeing others taking the time and patience in doing this, it encouraged me being persistent. It took me about 20 mins, knocking the rim of the stopper with a pair of attached wooden chop sticks and a hammer. It finally popped up a little. It wasn't all the way, so I continued to pray and tapping it, and added more WD40. Then I tried pushing it down a little, then it popped all the way out. Thank you!! Hallelujah!!

Thank you, 'Getting It Done North Of 7'. I tried your four suggestions - I realised why you didn't want to demonstrate the dental floss method - you're right - tedious indeed. In fact I gave up on that, but did succeed by inserting a thin - bladed filleting knife and teasing the cap anti - clockwise. I was overjoyed when it worked! We've decided to use an old - fashioned rubber plug instead - simple and effective. It seems things are sometimes designed these days to be more complex (and expensive to replace if broken) though I guess some parts do offer a little more convenience. Anyhow, cheers from England :).

Thank you from the UK! I’ve now got mine unstuck and given everything a damn good clean and lubrication! xx

Thank you!! I just put in a brand new Moen sink with a pop up stopper. It would stick right from the start when there was water in the sink. The WD-40 did the trick! I never would have thought of that. I appreciate your video.

I couldn’t do it using any of those methods so I accessed it from below after removing the drain pipe then a long, slender screwdriver, and tapped it with a hammer. It popped up. Then I lubricated the pop-up piston. It works. Thank you for posting.

Thanks for the tips and video, it saved my day. Mine worked with a piece of wood and a few light blows with a hammer. I had visions of taking the whole drain plug assembly out!

Thank you so much! I used the 2nd method! I didn’t have a wooden piece so I just used a dinner knife instead. After I tapped a few time I saw the sink plug popped up by a tiny bit so I used the tip of the knife to widen the gap slowly and finally got a glove to twist it counter clockwise. Ur video did make a great impact in people’s life and the world needs more people like you! ❤😊

The stick + hammer combination did the trick for me. Thanks so much for the video, I thought I was never going to pop the plug back!

I just want to say thank you! I emptied the sink and wiped it clean. Applied wd40 like you said to and gave it 10 minutes. Then I took my hammer and a wooden dowel and tapped it twice and it popped up! Funny how something so random can make me SOOO HAPPY!

The rubber gloves trick didn't work and made my hands ache, but the piece of wood and the hammer worked like a charm! Only to find the plunger piece inside had a broken spring and had come away from the (really yucky) inside. At least I know what I'm dealing with now, which is 100% more than before I lucked upon your video. THANK you, from Queensland, Australia!

I’ve been a widow for seven years now. I’ve had to learn how to do these small jobs for myself and thanks to you I’ve unplugged my sink stopper. I took all the water out, let it dry, sprayed it with DW40. Next, I didn’t have a piece of wood so I used the handle part of my screw driver and tapped the business end with my rubber mallet. PRESTO! Boy that felt good.

Thank you! Mine isn’t pop up, but I watched anyway. Your using the blade and floss gave me an idea. I was able to use the blade to pull it out, and put a plastic phone cord style hair tie on it to keep from it getting stuck down again until I can replace it with something else. So thanks again!
