I had the pleasure of seeing Don McClean live and it was a great. His songs are personal and touching, I agree about Chet Atkins. Never was there a musician who had such a look of joy on his face while playing the guitar like Chet had. Another Great interview Joe. Don gave you a great compliment at the end of the interview about the fact that he told you things he never told anyone~ because you let him speak and you know how to listen! Thank you!

I'm sure Don knows that the reason American Pie was soooo successful is that a lot of us were moved by the plane crash. I had a paper route at that time and the song really felt meaningful. I'm sure there are millions of others like me.

Wasn't really sure what he would have to say , I've heard American Pie so many times thought it was all there. What more could you add? Stories about 'Vincent'?. This was so much more than I expected. This was great. After all the artists in the 80's-90's complaining about record companies, it was good to hear what they really were like. I still have my record company, mostly inactive now but, yeah that was our goal, to be like the people that helped him out. And he wasn't perfect. He really opened up to you. Thanks Joe, Another HOME RUN!

It's great that when a name is mentioned you insert a photo of the person.
When I was in Nashville I tried to get to the cemetery to visit Chet but couldn't figure out the bus routes to achieve that.
Don McLean sounds like an ordinary guy who had a plan to get somewhere, and got there because of the people he met. And he remembered them, what they did to help him and credits them with that help.
    Be well!

Great to listen to Don open up and reveal personal thoughts and experiences. Behind one of the most amazing folk/pop/rock voices of the 20th century, and equally talented songwriters, is a person with fears, insecurities, a lonely and sad childhood, who somehow found his way to the top with much help. American Pie are Vincent two of the greatest songs ever written. There are only. a handful of people who can stand alone on a stage with just a voice and an acoustic guitar, and command your attention and thoughts for over an hour. I can only think of a few: Don Mclean, Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Joanie Mitchell and Joan Baez are the only ones I can think of.

I believe one of his greatest strengths, was his willingness to ask for help in his early years! The 1972 video recording of Don Mclean singing Vincent is a poetic masterpiece. I took this song for granted back in the day. Listening to it now, I'm blown away. When I listen now I can actually visualize Vincent Van Gogh's paintings. I can feel the tragic sadness and the beauty through the simplistic style of Don's beautiful voice. One of the most beautiful songs ever recorded in my opinion.

Of course I’m a bit jealous of your history but I can let that slide because of all the great stuff. Thanks man. It really does seem that these guys are not afraid to be honest with you and many , like Don here are just so humble and honest about things that even “ regular “ people are uncomfortable admitting. Thus the song "Vincent" has from the first time I heard it some 50-plus years ago been one of my cherished songs to listen to. Now I find out that he wrote it about 5 miles from where I live. As the saying goes, "If it ain't Dutch, it ain't much !" Thanks, Don for honoring Vincent with your song.

@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum After you introduce yourself at the start of each video I always call back aloud "Hey Joe". Drives my wife crazy. Of course, I have no plans of stopping. Thanks for taking the time to write a congenial note . I've never been to Nashville or Memphis but once we get a handle on this pandemic I'm going to come out at visit the MHFM and with luck shake your hand. Be well. Thanks again!

Whenever I see notification of one of your posts, I keep hoping it's one on the man from Nashville who single handedly opened the door for so many of these artists you are profiling, to experience the good fortune they speak about from covering, playing with, and in some cases composing with Black R&B artists and their music. That would be the one and only:
"John R., way down South in Dixie, 1510, on the dial, WLAC, Nashville, Tennessee... on the big daddy voice.50,000 watts of soul power!"
He played the "race" music other stations in the South during the 50s, 60s, and even into the 70s wouldn't play. He promoted the artists who made the "race" music, that other radio stations at the time condemned. Even Wolfman Jack acknowledged him as a broadcasting pioneer, who heavily influenced his character as a D.J. I remember late nights listening to his scratchy sometimes inaudible radio signal, wafting up the Lake Michigan shoreline into an early transistor radio, and later the car speaker in my old '56 Pontiac Star Chief.
Those memories of his jive talkin', free form interaction with the song he's playing, and hawking everything from Reich Poultry Farms baby chicks, to record specials from Ernie's Record Mart, a longtime sponsor of his Program 10 (..."Records galore at that store!...")
    are indelible.
I was able to locate a couple of his taped radio broadcast programs on the Internet from the late 60s. Would dearly love to see him profiled here in some way. Would make a trip to Nashville to explore all things John R. if such a retrospective exists down there somewhere. In my opinion, he was a largely unappreciated national treasure, who did more for Black artists, and their music (even though he was white) than anyone else during that same period...may he rest in peace.

Hi Busta... thanks for sharing your thoughts... If he were still with us I would certainly try to interview him but unfortunately that can’t be. I don’t do bio type stories ... at least not as of now. I just try to get these interviews done while the interviewees are still alive. Thanks again for your suggestion... best... Joe
