How Moses McCormick learned 50+ languages! RIP

  • 🙌🏽 Moses McCormick was a prolific language learner and CZcamsr who passed away recently.
    Incredibly, Moses spoke (to varying degrees) over 50 languages, and I wanted to pay tribute to him by making a video about how he learned languages - what drove him, and the techniques he used.
    This wasn't an easy task, as Moses recorded 3,210 videos over his CZcams career. (This prolific activity gained him 1.2 million subscribers and over 180 million views.)
    In other words, I had a lot of material to comb through! It would be impossible to sum up everything that Moses was about in just one video, but I tried my best, and I hope I did the task justice.

      I always wanted to learn English. When I was a child, English course was very expensive. When I was a teenager, I saved money and paid to learn Spanish because English was expensive. In my twents, I got a job at a book store. I bought some English grammar book and taught myself. I don't have a Brazilian certificate of English, but I got a job at two English school as a teacher and worked for five years as a translator. I am teaching myself now Italian, French, Spanish properly because I am basic, Greek and Arabic.

    I started learning Spanish at age 29. Up till then I spoke only English. Just curiosity. Like Moses said I never had any intention of learning to be fluent or make any big deal of it, once I got on a roll, it just started going and going.
    I literally started by picking up a small piece of text (A warranty message on a product) in Spanish and a dictionary to see if I could "de-code it". Then I couldn't find some of the words in the dictionary..... then I figured out that those were verbs that had to be "conjugated", so I learned about verbs...... then later another piece of grammar or a few other words. I got books, I read them. I put labels with the Spanish names of things all over my house. I found Spanish speaking pen pals online and communicated slowly by looking up words and plugging away at it for hours and hours, week after week, month after month.
    At the end of one year I had taught myself to speak, read and write Spanish somewhat fluently. I made friends in the Hispanic community. I'm 50 now and still use Spanish almost weekly here in rural Georgia. Learning a language was one of the best things I've ever done in life.

    My favorite Laoshu moment definitely has to be the one were he was speaking with a group of chinese people and one pulled out their phone contacts for some reason and they asked him if he could read chinese characters.
    He read them with no hesitation. And the look on the chinese group's eyes was unforgettable. They continue to converse in Mandarin when two old ladies come out of nowhere and talk to him in tagalog "oh, you're still here?" Is what I remember but ik they had a conversation in tagalog.
    At this point the chinese group were loosing it and couldn't believe what was happening lol. But then there was an Indian guy holding a flag I think that was watching the whole thing go down in the background.
    The two old ladies and the Chinese asked Laoshu if he could talk in his native tongue as well.. offcourse, he was able to speak Hindi. And everyone in the group was flabbergasted at what they had just witnessed lol.
    Definitely his best moment. Up there with the time he went to South Korea and was speaking with group of students. They thought he was working for the FBI for knowing so many languages LOL

    Moses was a genuine inspiration, his priority of learning phrases and conversation is pretty much what I try to emulate - a few basics because conversation is so encouraging, then massive input to build the scaffolding and fill in all the blanks.

      And while we're being fair here after watching several encounters of him with others one can see a common flow to every conversation. I'm not saying it's scripted at all. Magicians do this and it's called sleight of hand. Well, Moses used sleight of tongue. When you render someone nearly speechless you can really predict the next few words they are to say. That said. . . Moses will always be legendary.

    • @FalconWindblader
      @FalconWindblader Před 2 lety +2

      Not true. not in Moses' case anyway. Moses himself said it, that he's far more interested in getting kinda conversational with a language than being super good with it. getting to such a level DOES NOT require talent. MASTERING a language, like getting to Tolkien's level of proficiency of English, would require talent, & that's NOT what Moses has been doing. heck, one could even safely say that despite his fair proficiency with those 50 or so languages, he has yet to master any single one of them. ANYONE capable of learning at all, can get to where he's at with ANY ONE of the languages he picked up, if enough hours is put into learning it. what getting to his level of proficiency in any of those languages is required however, is unparalleled drive & dedication. THAT'S what's truly rare about him. the rest of us could only dream of getting where he is, not because we ain't as talented, but only because we ain't even half as driven & ain't working half as hard as he does, with what he's been doing.
