Hamad said that Cole wasn’t trying to defend Kendrick’s honor, the fight resulted from a situation that got out of hand.
“It’s definitely not what people are saying. It was definitely not like he was defending Kendrick. It wasn’t like ‘Don’t talk to Kendrick like that,’” he said. “Kendrick was there, Top [Dawg] was there, Jay[-Z] was there, Beyoncé was there. Me and Cole. Grown men got a little heated. All I remember was me and Jay looking at each other like, ‘Oh, these n-ggas about to fight.’”
He also noted that Breakfast Club host Angela Yee was in attendance, and he feared her witnessing the event would lead to it being further publicized in the press. Ultimately, all parties involved squashed the beef soon after with no ill will. Diddy even delivers a spoken-word prayer outro on the track.
“We ended up pulling back up on Top and Kendrick later that night because everybody there was kinda like we gotta figure this out,” he said. “Even Puff was like, ‘I wanna figure this out.’ The next day he pulled up, they chopped it up, like it is what it is. It was never a real issue after.”
