  • US President Joe Biden lands at RAF Mildenhall for jet fuel on his way back from the Middle East. Biden stayed on the plane, a modified Boeing 747 with the call-sign 'Air Force 1', while it re-fuelled amongst a large security presence at the US Air Force operated base in Suffolk, England.
    The Boeing VC-25 is operated by the US Air Force, a modified Boeing 747 for military VIP use. While he is on-board it carries the call-sign 'Air Force 1' and is followed by a support plane, a Boeing C-32 (modified Boeing 757), that also landed for fuel.
    A motorcade of US security vehicles and London Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism / Special Escort Group units were on standby in case he needed to travel by land. Two US Army Blackhawks from Germany were also on standby for medevac if needed. Military police provided security around the base while a no-fly zone was put into place.
    For a full video of planes and helicopters, along with Biden travelling in a security motorcade in Scotland, watch this video: • Video

    I was stationed at Mildenhall in the '80s. Loved it. Reagan was president. He & Thatcher were close allies. When he was in England, Air Force One stated at Mildenhall.
    I was fortunate enough to be on the previous Air Force One, a modified Boeing 707. As an Air Force ARFF, it was required that we did a walkthrough. We need to know where the T- Handles for Fire Suppression are & Engine Shut Down procedures. We had access to the entire aircraft EXCEPT the communications room. If that's on fire, let it burn.
    Kind of like the SR-71 Blackbird. If the front of the aircraft is on fire, save it. The rear seat pilot, let it burn. We had 2 Stationed at Mildenhall. Great times at The Galaxy Club & all the towns of East Anglia.

      I watched it land and take off in Paris during the GWB presidency. Security there was not excessively stringent, and it was not at a military airfield - It was at Orly airport, which was open for business as per usual. They did a trick though - they took off in the opposite direction from all the other traffic. Aircraft were taking off to the north-east (RWY 06) and AF1 departed to the south-west (RWY24). I don't know why they did this, but one might guess it is an extra precaution to thwart a ground-based attack. The 747-200 was not alone. It was accompanied by a 757, painted in identical US livery. I watched them arrive together - military style, with very close spacing between them - but they did not depart together (I didn't see the 757 depart). I was listening to ATC, and they used the callsign "Airforce One". They had a clearance limit (don't recall what it was) but they requested to climb direct to 10,000ft, which was approved.

      Not that I disagree with you but they probably chose to stop for fuel rather than using a tanker for convenience. Tankers generally have to fly at a specific speed and altitude for refueling. Many different factors could have cause them not, i.e. severe turbulence or cloud coverage. They would have to onload probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 140,000 lbs of fuel to continue on and a KC-135 is pretty much full at that point. At the average 6,500 lbs per minute fuel transfer speed, it would take 21 minutes! That's pretty straining on the pilots, especially after just coming all the way from the Middle East. So, the probably were stopping for fuel for an easier day.

I was on a Lufthansa 747 once on a flight from JNB to FFT that had to make a pit stop in ATH for additional fuel and the captain told the passengers he couldn't take off again for 90 minutes, so the brakes could cool. (I don't know any other reason for that length of stop, and it made me miss a connection to IAD -- but LH put me on a DL flight which got me to Washington on time for a meeting.

      @BirdDog. Před rokem

      @@lordroo8484 it does with inflight refueling. Trump stopped twice on the way home from Singapore. Also they don’t generally buy gas out of base due to sabotage. If they do plan they bring in their own gas way ahead of time and the tanks are guarded 24/7 until the plane is fueled

    • @BirdDog.
      @BirdDog. Před rokem

      Bottom line is they never buy gas out of base, planes range is about 6k, and that why they fueled in the uk. Trump stopped in Guam and Honolulu coming back from Singapore
