Milwaukee Road Beer Line Rolling Line Club Layout Overview

- This is an overview video of a 1:1 scale recreation of the Milwaukee Road Beer Line Branchline in a video game called Rolling Line that is meant for building model railroads with low-poly art style. It can also be played in Virtual Reality. This layout is the result of around 4-5 months of work by a team of around 25 members all collaborating on various aspects of the layout. The trackplan was built directly on top of official MILW track diagrams from the railroad itself and a huge amount of effort went into historical research, finding reference photos, creating new models for rolling stock/engines, signs, architecture, bridges, you name it. Very proud of the results and our team.

Great work! I live just across the river from the former Beerline, so it's hard for me not to imagine what it looked like while I grocery shop in what once was Humboldt yard. This map is fantastic, and very well detailed. I will try to answer some of your history questions in your video to the best of my ability: The cream colored building at the top of Brewer's Hil (234 E Vine) was originally a tavern sponsored by Miller. In the '50s its name was changed to the Party House Inn, which closed in the 80s or 90s I believe. Today it is a restaurant/bar. Lakefront Brewery was originally a TMER&L Powerhouse. Wisconsin Electric Power kept operating it after the 50's as substation for underground power I believe, and then Forestry used it from the early 70's until it was purchased by Lakefront.
The buildings on the northwest side of Humboldt Yard - The triangular one was built in the early '20s and housed 'Milwaukee Boiled Ham Co.' I have no idea when they went out of business, or what occupies the building now (It's kinda creepy in real life). Next door was a small warehouse, and the larger building next to the warehouse was a bottling factory of some kind. In '73, that location became 'Regal Box Company' and they're still there. The building next to that was a casket manufacturer, but the building was razed in the late-60s or early '70s. The building on the southside of the yard was 'Fisher Iron and Steel Co' and used as a warehouse, but I don't have any timeline for that business either, other than it existed in that location. At one time, there was an icehouse warehouse where the scrapyard later was in the yard. I will admit I was a little disappointed that Humboldt Gardens, a Schlitz-owned tavern on the corner of North and Humboldt wasn't modeled, but that is also one of my favorite buildings in Milwaukee, so I will cut you guys a bit of slack. I wish I could give you more info on the layout of the Schlitz tracks, but I think that layout changed a lot with time. Back when they were icing reefers, I believe the track layout was actually a little more simple. There is still a portion of the rollercoaster that exists today, albeit very small, but it's been converted to a footpath with a stairwell down to Commerce St. On the other side of the marsupial bridge underneath the Holton St. Viaduct is Swing Park, which is just a few swings welded to the underside of the bridge. Hopefully this answers some of your questions. Great job again on the map!

Born and bred Milwaukeeian here. I've been a model railroader coming on 50 years now. I'm also a huge computer nerd for decades. Modeling Milwaukee on a computer has been my dream since the original MS RR sim! What you have built here is nothing short of pure magic - for me anyway! Moreover, you've sparked a historical interest in me that, as a student of history, I MUST scratch!! Your Rolling Line Milwaukee Road Beer Line map must be experienced in VR to be appreciated - Brilliant, stupendous, truly A-MAZ-ING!!!

As a person that knows a lot about the Milwaukee Road and the Milwaukee area, you did a great job.
This is really well done. I've researched the Beer Line extensively for HO scale modeling endeavors (see Nov 2011 MR) and really cool to see it come to life this way as well.

Another area you could do is Milwaukee Solvay and coke, lots of cool industries and trackage. I could try and help with the track plan I know someone with blueprints. And I could help with Chicago area steel mill blueprints with trackage. Great job you all did on this one it really seems alive I really like it.

Great video! looking at it through the eyes of a model railroader. You mentioned you found a map of the actual railroad back in the day? Can you point out where you found it?
Really beautiful and interesting... congratulations to you and your staff. A question: if I wanted to replicate some of the buildings I saw in this video on my (much smaller) system, would I have to build them myself with the objects provided by the game? because it seems to me that in the mods of the "Beer Line Workshop Items" collection present on the Steam workshop there are only windows...😁

Yes you can do all of that including tons of modded locos and props

Outstanding job! I take it your from Wisconsin? I live in Kenosha myself. As a kid in the 70's, I used to love watching the C&NW passenger and freight trains roll by.
Edit: I noticed about halfway through through the video there were no bumping posts on end tracks. Does the game have those?

This is fantastic! Unbelievable how much detail you have in this. I’m currently building a compressed n scale shelf layout representing the Beer line from the Blatz warehouse to just before the Humbolt bridge. This video is a great resource for me. I had purchased a Milwaukee Railroad Historical Society publication on the Beerline as a reference but it doesn’t allow for some of the perspectives your video provides. It’s amazing! I have saved your video for future reference. Thank you for the time and effort. Well done!
