Most of my relatives are buried in that cemetery. My Dad was acquainted with the Winslows and used to tell me that when I was around 2 (1948) , he took me out to Dean's Uncles farm and I got to ride on his big dog.

My cousin and I crashed the Wright Family's (Steven and Amanda Wright's) Christmas Party (near Dayton, OH) back in 2006. He had once worked at the house when it was a museum, before the Wrights re-assumed ownership. The front door was unlocked, he opened it, we walked around the house for a while...before Amanda asked if we were "family". Of course, we said "no" and exited stage left...right after being greeted by Steven coming down the stairs.

I was there back in 2013. As a James Dean and Morrissey fan, it was an amazing experience. I really wanted to go in the high school and see the "YOU CAN'T GO HOME AGAIN" on the wall, but I got scared. What a hidden gem...

We were out in Fairmount in the summer of 1984. I was just 15 years old, when my parents, nephew, & I, by chance, met Mary Lou Winslow at a local pharmacy. She invited us out to the Winslow homestead and gave us a tour of her home and the grounds. She showed us the 1949 Ford 4 door, which was green at that time, parked inside a small barn and James Dean's hand and foot prints in the cement just outside or around, that same small barns doors. We went out to the cemetery where James Dean is buried, but his headstone had been stolen. I guess it was later replaced. We ended up at the James Dean museum, where I met and spoke to Adeline Nall, Dean's drama teacher. She said that I reminded her of Marlon Brando, which I took as a huge compliment at the time. It was a great trip. The people of Fairmount, Mary Lou Winslow, & Adeline Nall were all good, wholesome, down to Earth people. I will never forget that road trip or any of those that we met while there. Today, both of my parents and nephew, are gone, but in my memory, we're all together again, in my dad's 1973 Ford Country Squire Station Wagon, driving down the open highway.

To leave his old school like that is a disgrace and the community should be ashamed of themselves. In Britain it would be made into flats. Where's the community spirit in these small US towns now ?

    • @3713msg

I have cousins that live in Fairmount since the early 1950's, and they attended Fairmount High, back in the 1960's and 1970's. The community is small, and lower middle class. The school building is in terrible shape, and in the middle of the small town. The building is an eyesore, is falling apart, and is very unstable and in danger of falling down. It should be demolished, and at some point, will be. Perhaps a park could be built on the grounds, and some of the artifacts from the building could be saved. There is a museum in Fairmount, and it has many artifacts relating to James Dean. I do visit Fairmount sometimes, to visit my aunt, (who is in her 90's now) and cousins about once per year. Everyone that I have ever met in Fairmount, have been the kindest, most loving, and thoughtful people I have ever met. Most people who live there are Quaker, including may family who live there. It is the Quaker way to live a simple life, through love of ones fellow man, and through meditation. If there were a way to repurpose the old Fairmount High School building, they would have done so. There simply is not.

Amazing video. I love that you are a Smiths fan! That farm is so beautiful. Almost surreal the way it has been kept up. The high school was sadly beautiful in its decay. The parking lot where he was born used to be the parking lot for the Goodyear Tire Store back in the day. I worked there in the late 1970's and parked in the stall where the room he was born in used to be. I haven't been back there since the mid 1980's though. There weren't that many plaques or memorials back then. I'll have to check Marion and Fairmount out again the next time I head down that way.

amazing video. I'm 24 and live in kentucky but a big part of my childhood was spent in fairmount due to my dad being raised there. My dad was born in '58 but he went to the same high school, and he has some precious artifacts that he recovered from it before they recently tore it down. I was offered the chance to explore it but unfortunately I was scared of it at the time. My grandmother had her funeral in that same church and was buried in the same cemetary.
