- The great Jonathan Nolan (Westworld, The Dark Knight trilogy), brother and frequent collaborator of Christopher Nolan, spoke to MovieWeb's Greg Archer about developing and directing Fallout, which he's been enamored with ever since he played Fallout 3 roughly 15 years ago. The series is now out on Prime Video.

yes, I was so worried about this show after Halo but they did an excellent job. all the details and references and while there were some changes they did stay faithful to the games.

I love this guy. To the creators of the Witcher and the halo series take note because this is how you do it. You start out by being a fan of the source material and then you hire fans of the source material. that’s how you make a number one hit that everyone I know is watching even if they’ve never heard of fallout. Congratulations to Jonathan Nolan and the entire cast and crew amazing job.

I don't think you always need to be fan of the source material. You just need to respect it and capture the essence. Tony Gilroy isn't a Star Wars fan but he is responsible for the best Star Wars content since the originals. People forget that everyones fandom is different, so what makes you a fan of something doesn't necessarily transalte to everyone else.
I mean... that's not nearly enough. Obviously you should be familiar with the tone and setting of what you're creating, but Jonathan isn't good at this because he's a fan.
He's good at this because he's a storied writer/director with decades of experience in film and T.V. and has connections to entire teams of people he trusts and knows how to work with.

Stereo audio itself isn’t the problem. Mono audio exported as stereo file is a problem as mono audio defaults to the left side of stereo speakers
@nathanrobertson819 that is indeed a problem, but the problem here is that voices should always be centered so it feels like youre looking at the person talking. If there are people talking on the sides it just feels awkward and confusing as a listener.
I work as a sound engineer for some corporate and broadcast content, in my experience sometimes the client pushes such a tight deadline that it is preferred that the video files are delivered with the recorded audio embedded, as opposed to delivering seperate audio files from an audio recording device to by synchronised later
When porting audio from a recorder straight into a camera, most commercial cameras only have 2x audio inputs and are only able to embed a 2-channel stereo audio mix
In this case, the only way a sound recordist can ensure both mic sources (subject and interviewer) are embedded clean into the video files is for each one to take up a seperate channel in the file, so that they can be independently adjusted/mixed later
The problem with this is that due to the fast turnaround on this type of content, there is no one hired to master the audio, and the editor of this kind of content will opt to just use the mix that is delivered, so no one mixes a final pass on the audio and what ends up being delivered is this
It's a five minute video, not an hour long broadcast. I could fix this on a laptop in ten minutes. @frishf8888

John Nolan is such a old school gamer. 👍 outrun was racing arcade action.
Listening to this compared to the director for the Halo tv show is night and day. Here's a man who wrote a love letter to the Fallout franchise and really nailed it. The director for the Halo show didn't take a single thing from the games other than the name. So sad that Halo turned out that way, but very happy that we got great shows like Fallout and The Last of Us.
I’m just glad people in his sphere actually take gaming serious. Some of the best stories ever written have been from games.
Same feelings I got when i played Elden ring as my first souls like game. Being able to play fallout wherever I want now with a steam deck is just so sick as well, FNV is a new favorite for it

he is right, many video games stories/world are phenomenal - Red dead Redemption, God of War, The last of us, ghost of Tsushima, fallout, uncharted, call of duty black ops 1 + 2, metal gear solid.
The Witcher deserved a crew like this. They did an absolutely phenomenal job it’s easily the best adaptation ever made. You can feel the love for Fallout in every second of the show

Finished season 1 last night. What a wonderful show. I believe the disney board needs to be sat down and forced to watch this interview and then the show right after. When you're faithful to the source material, people will like your product. It's not rocket surgery!
how hard is it to check the mono option in audio settings?
I wish i found out of all the nolans work right as it comes out because usually im always WAITING. Didnt even know nolan was part of fallout until now otherwise I'd been counting the days until release. Nolans have been literally carrying the entertainment industry for years now, them n james Cameron, everyone else needs to step it tf up.
I can appreciate the sentiment, but that's far from true, you just aren't actually exploring enough films and shows.

It's unbelievable that he will also see the 2nd fall of games if the manufacturers continue to only strive for the money and anti consumer practices, like DRM (because of Games for Windows Life you can't play Fallout 3 from Disk anymore), Lootboxes, Always online Game (like Fallout 76), in game Shops with Items that are priced more than the game (like within Fallout 76) and Buggy and broken games (like most Bethesda Studios games)
Is everyone ignoring that Jonathan looks like a Greek God 😅

How come Jonathon doesn’t have an accent and Chris does?
Jonathan does have a bit of an accent, but it's normal since he lives now in America and sounds different than his brother who doesn't have an accent.
Jonathon grew up in Chicago while his brother went to boarding school in England.
He and Chris have an American mother and a British father. Chris went to boarding school in England instead of staying in the US, while Jonathan stayed in the US. Hence why they developed different accents.
He does have an accent, an American one.

The 100 (seasons 2 on) is a show that could be considered a spiritual successor to fallout. In terms of exploration, questionable motives, faction politics, and even the types of factions are similar. It doesn't have the same atmosphere, but it does capture the feeling of exploration and landmarks that he's talking about.

Great interview and show Jonathan, everyones reaction to show is thats its excellent, the only question might be if its some sort of influential culturally relevant masterpiece, which only time will tell.
Borderlands 2 was aborher great game thats a a datk parody like Fallout, but your Hollywood buddies are already well on their way destroying that franchise. Darklands is another great dark "parody", and outside of gaming, Shadownrun and Robotech are great world building IPs similar to Fallout no one major is workin on hint hint

They are both british-american. Chris is older and might have been influenced more by britsh while his brother is much younger and had less influence. Chris went to school in England while Jonathan went to school in America.
The audio is terrible
Sounds like a mic didn't work that day and the editor didn't even bother to put the left audio channel to mono so we could hear it on both sides of our speakers/earbuds.

I honestly don't understand whats so bad about Fallout 4. 76 I understand but Fo4 was so much fun the world was awesome and it looked better than Fo3 and NV. Yes the story wasn't Bioshock level of great but it was good and with multiple endings too. I'm not trying to argue with what's your favorite game but I'm genuinely curious as to why people hate Fo4 so much.

The Sears Tele-Games system was released in the US prior to the Atari 2600. It plugged into TVs and played pong.

His father is American. Chris went to boarding school in the UK while Jon never and was schooled in the US. They have an English Mother American Father.
