      They are actually really fast they are just going into a really tight curve. Normal track speed is about 80 miles per hour.

      @@walloffame8383 If you look at the casting date on the side of the rails there, you can see a lot of them were produced in 1914.
      My working theory is that the curves are too sharp for higher speeds using rail that is over a hundred years old.
      I bet those rails started out on the mainline with 80mph limits, and then as they wore down from use were placed into the yards.

      That was me operating. The conductor was on the end you see blowing the horn while I was "shoving" from the back of the train.

    • @WestAirAviation
      @WestAirAviation Před 5 lety +1

      Probably until the 2040's, realistically. Of the new $5.7 Billion recently awarded to the LIRR for improvements, some of that will go to new duel mode engines, but there's been zero talk of new coaches for those engines.
      Considering the Railroad is adding camera's and PTC to the ancient m3 fleet, it's safe to say they have no plans of getting rid of any of their rolling stock throughout the 2020's.

    • @WestAirAviation
      @WestAirAviation Před 5 lety +5

      Where: Long Island City, Queens, New York NY, U.S.A
      Why so slow: The railyard is rated for 5mph only.
      Where are the barriers: The flashing lights and gate arms are there. You can see them in the video.
      Can they go faster: Not without derailing over the switches.
      Why single to multiple track: almost every end terminal on this railroad ends with single track. (Hempstead, Port Jefferson, Port Washington, Long Beach, Oyster Bay, The Mainline, Montauk, West Hempstead, and Far Rockaway to name them) - It's just the theme of this railroad.
