My working theory is that the curves are too sharp for higher speeds using rail that is over a hundred years old. I bet those rails started out on the mainline with 80mph limits, and then as they wore down from use were placed into the yards.

did not know tracks to LIC are now electrified. This used to be diesel only territory. video does not show the terminal at LIC.
There were always electrified tracks at LIC, but they only recently electrified some of the platform tracks.

The locomotive hauling the double deckers are diesel. Except for the M9s that use third rail.
The 500 series locomotives can also use the third rail. You can see the red current pickup beam at the bottom of the trucks.
