  • On Mid-day’s 40th anniversary, journalist Mayank Shekhar caught up with legendary filmmakers #ShyamBenegal and #AnuragKashyap to discuss the past 40 years in films. Anurag Kashyap revealed details on his guerilla shooting tactics during #GangsOfWasseypur and #BlackFriday. The director also credited #ShahRukhKhan for bringing the theatre scene alive in Mumbai. From the changing trends in Bollywood cinema to social media trolls, the directors got candid during this chat with mid-day. The Let’s Talk series brings together influencers and game changers across time and fields to compare notes on the Bombay that was, and how it got to where we are today.

    Anurag's friendship with Karan has started to cool the fire in him which resulted in excellent movies... and nowadays Anurag is trying to satisfy the masses it seems with movies like Almost Pyaar and Manmarziyaan.. People like us who are Anurag's fans craves for those political, black comedy kind of films which made him what he is in the first place

    There are two types of 'rich' people. One who are genuinely rich and the others who write books about 'how to become rich,' lot of these books are bestsellers. These authors make a fortune out of telling people how to become rich and dabble into personal investment training, stock marketing consulting etc. space
    I believe Anurag Kashyap is type two here. He constantly tells you how he revolted against the system, small town background, how he excelled, struggled and made great films. In reality, Kashyap has not won a single international award (Cannes, Oscar, Bafta, Berlin, Venice, Sundance, Golden Globe etc.). I am not seeking foreign validation but broadly it gives you an overview of how impactful, avant garde, revolutionary a filmmaker is. Yes, he was a judge in few but that's absolutely irrelevant. He is all style but no real substance. His movies just come and go without a dent. Honestly, I would have loved and adored someone like him to represent India in the international platform to make us proud. Someone who'd make one cracker of a film in two/three years. But, alas, he has taken the easier route...of impressionism. Basically, a low budget production enabler under the garb of intellectualism, experimentation and unorthodoxness. Albeit, a different Mahesh Bhatt of our age.

      @sejwalvishu Před 4 lety +2

      Are you trying to be different just for the sake of it? Because the way you are thrashing him certainly sounds exaggeration! He challenged the star system by casting good actors and kinda led the underground guerilla cinema.. He might be losing his touch with his recent films but he certainly was experimental and path breaking with films like black Friday, no smoking, dev d, paaanch. In dev d, the places were hip, the visuals were trippy, there was some psychedelic elements in subtle ways! He might not be in his best form but he certainly will find a way to survive and thrive and hopefully keep astonishing us with his cinema too

    • @krishcorp
      @krishcorp Před 4 lety

      @@sejwalvishu His cult status is over hyped. He himself is branding and marketing his own cult. He did not challenge the star system by choice, he himself says he did not have money so hired new faces. About Kashyap leading underground guerrilla cinema, i don't know, we can debate. Yes, Black Friday has few flames which could not become engulfing fire in his later movies. Directors slow down with age, shows mediocrity with ill health but Kashyap at a very young age leveraged his image which unfortunately reflects the lack of serious film talent in our country. Just like Tamil films, Hindi films (two most important) too are stuck in shocking and pleasing the gallery in the name of good cinema.

    It's the media which demarcated movies as commercial or parallel cinema.
    over time people associated with the demarcation.
    but at the end of the day, there are awesome movies which are commercial & some crap movies in parallel cinema,
    the audience will go watch a movie that's good, be it commercial or parallel. the advent of multiplexes created a renewed platform, which gave a breather to parallel cinema and also changed the nature of commercial cinema.
    commercial cinema was made with ingredients that would fill single screen cinema theatres. so the commerical aspect dictated the form of the movies. most ending up as crap products for mass consumption.
    these two stalwarts are examples of people who stayed true to their craft.
    kudos to them.
    latest bane of Bollywood is mediocrity in scripts and story. but then you come across gems such as andhadhun etc. which turn the tide.
    content is improving.
    but the 80s was aperiodic where commercial cinema was crap and at cinema was at its peak.
    amazing talent such as om puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Dipti naval, Farooq Sheikh, Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi gave some superb performances.
    so it's a really interesting evolution.

    Filmmakers like Anurag Kashyap and Sudhir Chaudhary have used parts of cities very much in their films as a main part sometimes. Their films are because there were those cities.
    There wouldn't have been Dharavi if not for that slum areas of Dharavi in Mumbai, neither Masaan if it would have not been Benaras.

    What an wasted opportunity by Midday, instead of discussing about film making he was asking about history, why don't you just Google??

    Why are they talking about areas in Bombay? U thought they would talk about films. This studio shifted to this area..what the hell is this? It would be better if d host just asked the two directors their favourite films

      @@ArmanKhan-js8lc Yeah i watched it..first half of the interview is totally wasted on pointless banter about this studio was here n later shifted to some other area.. they could have jumped to the discussion of films directly without wasting time and pointless conversation which has no significance for majority of the viewers..

      I think even while doing so they were talking about how the changing urban landscape of Mumbai also affected the film production. You can’t blame them for being suckers of nostalgia.

    Well personally I would choose mainstream movies over art cinema cause mainstream movies do show a lot of social evils they do teach us brotherhood and lot of good things with entertainment whereas art movies they just showcase social issues without entertainment

    The host is not very good ..
    25./. of of the interview is about BOMBAY , and his sitting style is 49.19° southeast...
    I was thinking of these two giant's ideology of making movies but you couldn't fullfil my dream...
    They are great and you should have to research on Mr. #BENEGAL on how to question to him ,or what topic will be the best to do so ..
    I request to Mr. Bengal to teach us on how to make movies, what will be the central thinking of making films through your precious interview. So that new generation would learn from you....
    Thank you Mr kashyap for your wild entry in INDIAN CINEMA ....
