  • The federal government confirmed Thursday that 41 Canadian diplomats have left India after New Delhi threatened to revoke their diplomatic immunity if Ottawa failed to reduce its diplomatic footprint in the country.

    India wants peaceful relationships with everyone. For Canada freedom of expression is paramount. Canadians can want good relationship with India and support Khalistanis at the same time. Unfortunately for Indian democracy that duality does not work. Majority Indians would want Canada to suppress Khalistani movement in Canada as it poses security risk to India.

In none of the above scenarios quoted the citizens of Canada felt restricted in their ability to express themselves. It is a different story that no one in Canada is bothered about khalistanis. The very miniscule minority community is using archaic rules of politics to make unnecessary noise because Canada / USA do allow unrestricted freedom of speech as compared to India/Europe.

    I advice Canadians to read Article 11.1 of the Vienna Convention . It deals with the size of international missions within other countries. In the absence of a specific agreement as to the size of the mission, the receiving State may require that the size of a mission be kept within limits considered to be reasonable and normal.

    Canada should stay out of Indian's domestic business. Independent movement is a very sensitive matter for any country in the world. Any person engaged in such activities, no matter they are Canadian citizen or permanent resident will bear the risk on their own, don't expect any protection from government. Justin Trudeau has no experience at diplomatic experience at all. He put Canada in harms way without a good reason.

    When India stopped visa processing for Canadians, it was pretty much a dare to Canada - retaliate and stop issuing visas for Indians if you can! Canada cannot respond in kind not because of any nicety on Canada's part, but they can't lose the money that Indian students bring in.

    indian diplomats in canada is around 21 and Canadian diplomats in india was around 63. indian government gave certain periods of time to 41 Canadian diplomats to leave india. but they didn't leave so that's why indian government revoked their immunity

    I think the words used by Indian spokesperson was diplomatic “Parity”. India has 21 diplomats in Canada and Canada had 62… hence India asked Canada to reduce to 21..

    This is a master stroke from Indian government. Less diplomats in India means less visa processing. Less visa processing means less money flowing to Canadian government and universities. It’s a 14.6 billion $ a year business for universities in canada from Indian students. Justinder will loose support from university management for this blunder.

      Canada is, and will be, just fine. There will be no shortage of people wanting to come to Canada for a better life. We will remain a highly educated, highly developed, high-income country with a high standard of living and quality of life. And India will remain a poorly educated, undeveloped, low-income country with a low standard of living and quality of life. India certainly has lots of potential and we hope it can achieve some of its potential some day. But it doesn't seem like it'll be happening any time soon, sadly.

    what this discussion chooses to ignore conveniently is the fact that this chain of events was started by Canada expelling an Indian diplomat accusing him publicly and perpetually threatening his security in Canada and further. Was that in line with Vienna convention ? To the best of my knowledge, I don't think so. If Canada chooses to react further it will be third event of this cycle, not the second event.

    My son and daughter were dreaming to study in Canada.. now they are saying they never want to visit Canada and the reason they say is they no more feel secure to be in a country where that country openly allows hatred against Hindus and Indians. They say their seniors fellows who travelled to Canada are going through trauma and they certainly do not want to go through that trauma.     Trudeau is good at expecting other people to follow a process which does not apply to himself. He speaks of Law and Order, yet when he went public in parliament, he immediately punished India by expelling one of their diplomats based solely on allegations. This seems more like a kangaroo court! Then, he expects India to cooperate with Canada when Canada has ignored India's repeated and prolonged requests for cooperation with the Khalistani issue. As for an off ramp for India, it is the defeat of Trudeau in the next election.
