As Spanish native speaker, listening to Greek feels like listening to someone speaking Spanish but using random letter combinations.
💯
And for us Greeks, whenever we're in Spain, we often get the feeling that we hear Greek on the streets. But no. :D
So, I'm not the only one who sometimes hears Spanish when hearing Greek and the the other way round.

Never be ashamed or embarrassed about speaking a second language with an accent.
This! Languages is a skill worth learning even badly.
To be honest, people also find language with an accent appealing so...
Exactly!
True, BUT, I do believe that one must make an effort to pronounce as best and as close as possible. Nowadays, students and teachers alike do not strive for a good pronunciation. When I was learning English PRONUNCIATION was an important part of learning the language. After all, it does make communication easier.....

I don't know why, but Greek still feels like an Ancient Language even today. And it's so fricking cool.
Interesting 👍🙏🙏Marilena
The Greek of the present era and the ancient era are almost the same.
Almost every word if we split it in half will create two separate words which were and still exist (I mean that each one separately means something)
In fact, even today we speak the Greek of the ancient era to a certain extent!
@@Vele.The1st True but not exactly. Still there are some differences with the pronunciation.

When i heard Greek for the first time sounded like a song to me because it’s so melodic. It’s still so beautiful when people speak english with greek accent, in my opinion. Btw as a new greek learner i appreciate your chanel 😊
Greeks dropped their pronunciation because medieval and attic Greek was too difficult for peasants. Modern Greek is colorless and stagnated. I don't see it evolving.
@George Makedon I’ve just searched about him, i hope i‘ll get on a level in greek in future to understand/watch people like him.😁 It means ‘Falcon’ in turkish and not really common here so it’s actually suprising to find someone from beyond the sea that shares the same one with me, i appreciate it when i find random connections and coincidences like that😊
I scrolled down In the comments and saw yours and I'm extremely confused cuz the Greek that I hear and speak every day doesn't sound remotely melodic so can you tell me who is the person that speaks Greek like that I want to meet him
@@YES-bh1mn are you a native speaker? If it’s your first language that’s probably why you cant you cant hear it. People cant hear their own language as they got used to it since they grow up hearing it. It just sounds ‘normal’ to them. I also dont know what my language sounds like 😁
@@azrasahin198 I mean yes but it is also that I don't know someone (myself included) that speaks the language with such elegance as you describe in your comment but you make a fair point and at the end of the day it doesn't matter so there is no point in looking into it
I burst out laughing when marilou said seahorse instead of seashore 😂 you guys are SO adorable and awesome. I didn't think the accents between the participants sounded the same, though 😯
They wouldn't be exactly the same, as different people are on a different skill level and have a different relationship with the language! But I hope you could at least spot some patterns.
It's because most of us try to get rid of the accent and sound as native english speakers as possible. The younger generations are definitely better at that overall then the older ones, some greek kids have perfect american or british accents (mostly american)

Once I was traveling through Spain on a train and I heard a woman speaking Spanish and I immediately asked her if she was Greek.. and she was...as a Greek, I could tell the difference..
I am Greek and I know some Spanish and it's true those two languages sound very similar 🙂
Spanish is ultimately derived from Latin, which is an Indo-European language like Greek, the similarities at least in the accents are because of that.
However modern Greek is not the same as Classical or even medieval Greek, which probably sounded nothing like modern Spanish.
@Amy Paps
Germanic is an Indo-European branch, and it does not derive from Latin, that's totally incorrect.
Latin as an Italic language that borrowed a lot from Greek. Spanish is just one of several Romance languages that evolved from vulgar Latin, so of course some features of the Greek language remained.
I don't mean this as an insult at all, quite the opposite actually, but Marilou really cracks me up. She's hilarious!
She seems so fun and genuine really. I love her!

As a non-Greek speaker I found this video very interesting, The clear explanation of the basic vowel sounds in Greek as well as your point about the equal stress for all syllables was really illuminating since I love greek music and hear the language a lot (without understanding it) Thank you!
P.S. I love all accents. They are all rich tapestries of the many forces at play in the native language of the person, manifesting themselves and lending their story to English, enriching both speakers, and both languages (in my humble opinion)
My (Greek) husband's inability to differentiate schwa, /a/, and /æ/ is a constant source of amusement for me. (What can I say? I'm easily amused.) The other day he was cooking and asked me to get the butter for the batter out of the fridge. I couldn't tell which one he was talking about. (He makes plenty of fun of my Greek pronunciation, so we're even.)
Once upon a time, in a parallel reality, when I was doing my CELTA to become an English teacher, a colleague of mine, another Greek English teacher, really had problems with this. He would use the schwa with the word "can't" -- not to the amusement of our instructor! -Dimitris

I enjoyed this episode...very insightful and creative! I’m from Wales but learning Greek due to family links. I have a subtle Welsh accent but when speaking Greek it seems to disappear and my full Greek accent is unleashed...very proud of my Greek heritage and the beautiful accent! Also there are surprisingly a lot of similarities between Welsh and Greek!
Happy to hear you enjoyed it, Phil! My father's family line are Australians with Welsh heritage, so we're kind of the same, but opposite! I like the sound of Welsh, although I've only ever heard it on our Easy Welsh videos...
Wow! Small world 😉 have you ever visited Wales I wonder...I’ve been really trying to push my Greek learning recently, which is making me want to go to Greece as it’s been many years since I’ve visited! Hopefully in the future after the current situation improves 🤞
From which place are you in Greece?
I'm so envious! Welsh is one of the coolest languages in the world (also because I'm a massive Tolkien fan and Welsh was one of his inspirations to create Quenya, which is - quite literally - music to my ears).
This was actually really helpful. I Have a character in one of my stories I'm working on who has a Greek accent and I wanted it to be accurate when typing out her dialogue versus just 'she spoke in a greek accent' so yeah thanks a lot!

I would give up a year of my life to live in Greece and learn Greek as a native of the USA with Spanish as my mother tongue.
You don't have to give up a year of your life to do that! Just come here! -Dimitris
Bro. Save up for a year and then move out to Greece for a summer and you will see. You won’t want to move back to where you’re from. Just know Greece is a beautiful place but it has real problems like any other country/civilization. Good luck ✊🏽
It won't be that hard for you. Spanish (followed by Italian) speakers sound like native Greeks pretty fast!
I love to hear people speaking with an accent. It is so wonderful that people try to learn another language to be able to communicate and better understand each other. I could easily understand each of the speakers in this video and I applaud their efforts. Although we would all like to speak other languages without an accent, pass as a native, we need to be kind to one another and listen carefully and with patience when someone is speaking a language that is not their own.
Greek and Icelandic are probably the most beautiful modern languages there are. They both sound so light but sufficiently sharp, have a nice intonation and not too many loanwords.
I don't know about Icelandic, but we do have quite a lot of loanwords in Greek! I made an episode about them some time ago: czcams.com/video/B24Dt1HKKOM/video.html
Yes! I've been saying this for years. It's nice to find other people who think the same.
damn you think loandwords sound ugly? or only when they're not adapted to the phonology of the language
As Greeks we have capability to reproduce the most of the sounds of other languages (if we study them of course) And if you are musician too,(very good trained ears) then this is the best combination 🙃
I had such a good laugh...it's like I am hearing myself (I am Greek living in the US for 30 years, but the accent cannot change, παραμένει ελληνοπρεπής χαχαχα... what can you do?)
As I said at the end of the video, our accent is your heritage! I imagine that not every person in the US feels as I do, but I do think that in an international environment and context, our accents make our language more personal and nuanced. -Dimitris

I just discovered Easy Greek and I'm hooked! I'm not going to comment in Greek yet but … Greek pronunciation of English is funny and sweet! I was once told by a clerk in a tourist agency that I sounded Norwegian (which I am) when I spoke English. I was a bit offended by that comment, but yes, of course I do to some degree … He was a bit posh though, with very correct English pronunciation and would reply in English when I spoke Greek to him. Mostly though it's been very well received when I speak Greek even though it's only a few words, and that is so heartwarming and motivating! I get the same warm feeling from these videos of yours. I do try to speak Greek as a Greek though, I also sing Greek songs so pronuciation is important to me, and oftentimes people think I'm Greek until I reveal that I really can't say that much 😅 (Αλλά σιγά, σιγά …)
I think pronunciation requires practice like anything else! If you're persistent in learning the right way to pronounce words it's not that hard and it then it comes almost naturally. Keep going xxx jeg elsker Norge 😃❤️
@@Booklover-coffeelover My pronunciation is good both in English and Greek, I've been fluent in English for many many years, but you're right, pronunciation also requires practice and also I think good listening skills. What I meant is that I, being Norwegian, of course have a slight Norwegian accent, and because the clerk had encountered many Norwegian tourists he commented that I sounded Norwegian … I've actually been complimented on my English by several native speakers (and he himself was Greek), so I felt that that was a bit rude/stuck up when he also refused to speak Greek with me. His English pronunciation was very elaborate, you might say. Thankfully he's an exception to the rule when it comes to how Greeks treat foreigners trying to speak their language. Velkommen til Norge (after the restrictions are lifted of course …) 😊
@@goddessfreya13 Greeks usually try to be supportive to people who want to speak the language, because we know how hard greek is and because it's not spoken in many countries.

Great video. I loved Marilena, her accent reminds me most of my aunt Stella's. My aunt came from Lesvos when she was around seventeen. My family enjoys my imitation of her accent and it makes her laugh. Things that I stress when imitating her is that if she said "her" she would have a slight roll (trill) on the "r." She also tends to not pronounce two t's together so "little" becomes "lilla" ("Would you like a lilla cake?"). The other strong point in her accent is that she tends to end most sentences with an upward inflection - as if she is asking a question. So, "Hello (which she says, Eh-low) Kristen, this is auntie Stella" can sound like she is unsure of who both of us are 😆
Haha that's adorable!

Okay, well I am Helline (Greek) too so I personally believe that when you speak a language, the accent is a very serious matter in order to speak it right but nobody can blame someone who speaks with a specific accent because the brain wants what it wants and it's okay, it's a trait that we are from another country and we tried to learn a language and we succeeded in some point to go this far. Also, hopefully thats not offensive or culturally appropriative, I just have a passionate interest in your ancient mythology and wanted to incorporate it into a fictional world.
Not culturally appropriative at all - I mean, we're living in a globalised, post-modern world. How can one NOT be culturally appropriative? Just FYI: modern Greek probably sounds little like ancient Greek. But I hope this doesn't dampen your enthusiasm.

This is very correct. I am Hungarian living in Cyprus and having lived in America and speaking all the above languages fluently including Spanish and a few more , I can agree with this. But I also believe it depends on the language skills of each person. I know Greeks who speak beautiful
English without the accent.
Of course it does, and there are plenty of Greeks who speak with no noticeable accent. But at a high enough skill level, a person will sound great no matter where they come from. That doesn't mean accents don't exist!
@@EasyGreekVideos Also Greek Cypriots do not have a problem with the "sh & ch" sounds in English because these sounds exist in the Cypriot dialect. But compared to mainland Greek the Cypriot dialect is not as melodic!
Prouncing the final "D"' mini-syllable was a problem: The speakers all (or almost) said "worl" instead of "world" and "whir" instead of "whirl".
True! I noticed it too but couldn't find a language-related connection. Many Spanish speakers pronounce 'world' as 'worl'', whereas its more common for Greek speakers to actually pronounce that final -d. I think that's because Greek has a greater variety of long consonant combinations than Spanish, but that's just an impression from only being a learner of the language. -Dimitris

What an excellent program highlighting the issues Greeks have speaking Greek. As a Greek American, I know I have difficulty with certain Greek sounds. I heard Mr. Bourla interviewed on a radio show about the Pfizer Covid vaccine and was able to recognize that he was Greek, even though his name didn't give away his ethnicity to me.
I'm Greek American and was raised in Chicago, so I've got a little bit of a Greek accent when saying certain English words plus a Chicago drawl on top! My accent is also a little bit laiko, since we're from Chios. My Greek sounds a little crazy I think lol
It sounds like a unique way to speak you have a right to be proud of!
Hahaha, us Chiotes have a weird, turkish accent for real. Hearing us talk compared to other greeks is a nightmare 😂
i like your profile pic!!!
. . ..Ειστε (εσύ και η Μαριλένα) so adorable!!
As a Turkish person Greek is like a music to my ears. I had a lot of Greek friends in Portugal last year and I think their accent was the best among all.
I came here just to listen to greek, I realize I haven't heard greek being spoken.
I hope you liked it
I'm Swedish and don't really have a swedish accent but there is a very typical swedish accent that is hard to miss even though we are considered one of the best countries at english in the world that doesnt have english as a native language.
Another fun thing is that I have a greek boyfriend that has no greek accent at all but everyone else I've met from Greece has the very typical greek accent.
Much love to you all! Great video!
I love the fact that Cretans and Cypriots speak in a very similar manner when the rest of Greece talk in a different way
We have a much heavier accent that foreigners might even confuse for some kind of arabic

This is so funny (in a good way) and wholesome. It's been so interesting to hear the accents and the pronunciations that were more difficult. I haven't heard much Greek spoken before and it sounds so fluid. Hoping to visit there soon. 😍
Thank you!
When you're from Crete and wink because you can easily pronounce the -SH, -ZH and -CH sounds (-χι, -γι and -κι respectively)!
Not the vowels though...
Great video!
The first lady is adorable. Every time she's unsure about her accent, she makes the cutest face.
😄 Yes you Cretans definitely have a richer sound palette than us mainlanders. Although Marilena is also Cretan!
Oh my God some spansih accent are here..i heard the accent like spanish accent, anyway i am learning spansih and greek and i just realize the accent little bit sounds like spanish or on the other side :) ..hopefuly my greek getting better and fluent.God bless
👏🏼Your videos during this quarantine are getting more and more interesting. Focusing deeply into the analysis of the language is really what I am interested in.
i hope you will keep doing this kind of content apart from the interviews since you rock at it !💪🏻
Wow, thank you!
4:20 - It sounds like she is narrating an ancient Greek myth of a legendary King Chamileon. :D
As a Greek Australian most of you speak very very good English bravo poli
As a writer, I try really hard to do good research when I want to incorporate an accent into a character's speech. So I really appreciate this video, for not only giving examples of native speakers struggling with different sounds; but then breaking down where those struggles exist in the phonetic rules of the language, and why.
I now feel more confident, in my ability to bring the wonder of a Greek accent to my stories, in a way that's respectful and authentic. Thank you.

I really enjoyed this video! I love accents of all kinds. I work on a cruise ship - except not right now, so I've been missing all the different accents!
I also really like how you highlight and honor the accent. I hate when people make fun of someone for their accent - that person is trying way harder than the person teasing them!
Very helpful for me. I am chatting on the phone with a man in California who was raised in Greece. Quite an adventure in phonetics! lol
I'm Asian. Listen to this video, Greek is sound like Latin, like Italian or Spanish.
This video is amazing! Thank you so much for sharing this, and having the different speakers give examples. I'm an audiobook narrator, and these resources are priceless! I hope you have a wonderful day.
Thank you !! Marilou , easy Greek
I often put on a Greek accent. When my friend's landlady asked him if I had an accent, he answered "sometimes" 🤣
Hi from Netherlands 🇳🇱
As an English speaker “she sells seashells by the seashore” is so hard to speak ahahahah so well done everyone
This is fascinating!
I sought out this video as a writer, as I have a character with an accent that's vaguely Mediterranean (I refrain from specifying Greek because he's an immortal, so his accent is shifted somewhat from a modern Greek accent), and this was very helpful in pinning down the way it sounds in my head.
Thank you so much!
Your welcome ! Marilena
I love the Greek accent speaking English. It's very pure and literal/phonetic. I think when you understand this it makes it easier to speak Greek with a Greek accent (as a native English speaker).
True! Thank you 🙏🙏 Marilena
One of the best quick accent guides I've ever seen! Congrats!!
