  • We rode the Nightjet sleeper train Zurich to Vienna in a Double Room with OBB and loved it! Our journey started in Zurich and ended after we had reached Vienna, Austria, Italy the next morning. We were served our choice of breakfast and had great views coming into Vienna. We booked a double room. OBB Nightjet is a great way to travel!

    Good news and bad news. You were excited about crossing your first international border by sleeper train. The good news is that you did it twice. Without you knowing, the train crossed from Switzerland, crossed Liechtenstein, and entered Austria. The bad news is that there's no such thing as Champagne from Italy. Champagne can only come from the Champagne region of northeast France. What you had was a sparkling wine, but I'm sure it wasn't wasted. A great video guys.

    LOL you guys looked exhusted in the beginning of the video. The space looked tight but I think the sink is a very interesting design and use of the space. Choosing the breakfast was so funny but also a tad bit ridiculous how they make you choose. Another great video!

    I traveled on a 3 month Eurorail pass in 1969. It was common to cross borders at night or evening, it was a rolling customs and immigration clearances in Western Europe. The intercity trains often had cars which went to different destinations. When the train wasn’t crowded the seats could be put together and you could sleep 3 people across in a compartment . I never took the Wagon-lit expensive sleeper. But traveled the Orient express many times.

    Cozy room. Very cozy for two. Very. But it's better than trying to sleep sitting in a coach seat. They should have a place elsewhere in the car for larger suitcases.

    I still think the downside of a sleeper train is that you miss seeing the countries you are travelling through.

    These double-deck cars were built in the 1990s for CityNightLine which was at the time a cooperation between the railways of Austria, Switzerland and Germany. Some cars ended up with ÖBB and were modernized some, they are still used on railjet. Economy single compartments are exactly the same as economy double, just with one bed only. Deluxe double, on these cars only used between Hamburg, Zürich and Wien, gives you a compartment twice the size with a table with two seats and private bathroom with shower. Unlike the single deck sleeping-cars these don't offer public showers. The shape of the roof follows the loading gauge so it is highest in the middle.

    For anyone traveling, door peepholes can be tampered with, installed backwards it will allow the curious public side of the room to catch a eyeful, save letting them getting a jolly good time, put a small piece of paper over the lens, and a strip of electrical tape (the black stuff) above it to hold it, you can still flip it up to see out when necessary, I learned of this practice after a person was caught peeping in, it also works adopting this habit over your computers Webcam, you never know if someone found a way to watch it.

    I can't say that seeing this train has made me want to take it -- it looks as though they'd tried to put beds in the space of an airplane restroom. Good for you, enjoying what you can and not letting the disadvantages get you down. You're great travelers.

      The twice as big deluxe sleeper cabin upstairs with seating corner, bathroom with shower would be your option then. I would claim this night train type is quite unique in Europe, though the WLabmee sleeping cars with the 2 or 3 bunks and sink in the corner are nice as well, and the deluxe sleeper cars that are used by ÖBB for Italy before they will be exchanged beginning next year.

    In the same Train there is another Wagon where you can book a bigger room with ensuite Shower and Toilet (Wagon Nr. 302, 4 Rooms on the upper Deck) but they are typically sold out fast.. I use this type of compartment earlier and i really enjoy it :-)

    This one made me laugh. You two are good sports given how cramped that room was. It looked like Allie stood the whole time until bed time! She even took off her glasses because there was no room even for her glasses!
    Did that train have a lounge or dining car?
    Years ago we took a day train from Switzerland to Vienna. We had one of those old time compartments with two long bench seats facing each other. If we had taken it at night, the two benches could be pulled out to make one big bed. Not sure what one would do if there were strangers in the same compartment, though!

    It's European, so think more like a Motel 6 room. No frills, but clean, comforable, and efficient...

    • @Stache987
      @Stache987 Před 2 lety

      I didn't see the accommodations name plastered all over the curtains or the bedspread, so it definitely wasn't a Motel 6, which I think they do that to distract from people taking them home.. I used to have a link where a certain culture in America wore hideous fabric for church on Sunday and family gatherings, Motel 6 reminds me of them.

      This one felt smaller than Amtrak, even though it was probably bigger. I think due to our bags. Great price, but you only are on for about 10 hours. We did another video with a double deluxe room on Nightjet and it was one of our favorites ever. Much bigger room for only about $70 more. It was Vienna to Venice.
