  • How it works
Maturing the K1 bio-media is important because a delicate eco-system is naturally developing for the bacteria involved in the nitrification process. K1 provides the maximum active surface area for the bacteria to colonise, more than other types of static media. It is this process which removes harmful ammonia and nitrite from the water.
How it is different to other media
As the K1 moves within the filter, it causes the old dead bacteria on the outside to be displaced. This makes space for new younger heavier feeding bacteria to rapidly colonise. Within the wheel is a protected surface which enables colonies of bacteria to naturally follow their lifecycle, of maturing, dying and then fueling the latter stages of the nitrification cycle. K1 has been designed to provide the best possible habitat for both young and mature beneficial bacterial colonies.
What is meant by 'self cleaning'?
Unlike foam, matting, or other forms of static filtration media, the K1 is designed to move freely within your filter. The constant chaotic movement of the air from your pump, causes the media to self clean and thus requires no maintenance. This allows the filter to reach optimum effectiveness without the disturbance of periodic cleaning, avoiding unnecessary loss of bacteria within the filter. 50 Litres of K1 will handle up to 250 grammes of food per day.

Does it need to move all the time? I stuck my k1 in pantyhose tightly in my filter it cant move around. I have sponges above it too

K1 need to move all the time for best performance, suggest give at least 50% space. you might need to redesign the air hole on filter/container

how long time take K1 media groving beneficial bacteria. It need low bubble or high bubble (Air flow rate L/H), i have qanvee LH-600 moving bed filter (tank size 4×2×2, /80 gallon) is that filter enough my fish tank.?

I had my K 1 micro 3 weeks in my Shark 800 canister and I cannot get it to sink. I added bacteria from sponge and Seachem and it’s still floating with good air flow. Any suggestions or does to his take months to sink ? I removed some also to see if they would jumpstart it

Anyone have experience with low KH with k1? I have a ras system with solids fallout filter into Moving bed biofilter into mechanical filter with filterpads for fines removal. No matter what I do I can't raise my KH? I've Texas limestone/regular limestone rocks/ 10kg of shell grit and I'm adding carbonate hardness generator. I can only maintain a KH of 2 degrees? pH is about 7 on average. Does the nitrification process sting the KH that much?
