Why This Japanese Farmer Plays Music for His Konnyaku Potatoes

  • Kunihiko Ishii grows konnyaku potatoes on his farm in Showa-Mura, Japan. Konnyaku potatoes are not really potatoes. They are roots. Still, everyone calls them potatoes because they look like potatoes. They are the key ingredient in konnyaku, a firm, tasteless jelly that’s used in lots of Japanese dishes. But konnyaku potatoes-which, again, just for the sake of transparency, are not really potatoes-are sensitive. So Ishii plays music for them. We’ll let him explain.

    I love how Great Big Story treats all stories with respect. When I was growing up as a Japanese American kid, I used to avoid TV/movies about Japan and other Asian countries because almost all of them were about ridiculing the cultures and treating them like freak shows. So it’s so nice to see videos like this one which just tells stories like they actually are with dignity and respect. I also love how they just leave the voices of those who are interviewed in the videos speaking their native language without dubbing them over with English.
    Thank you, Great Big Story, please keep up the awesome work. I really appreciate your wonderful videos!

When we eat them, we should still recognise that we draw life from taking theirs, even if it is a different kind to our own. Plants are great 😄🌱

  • @user-gr7jk5se6g
    @user-gr7jk5se6g Před 4 lety +5

    I’m not quite sure what’s the effect when playing music for potatoes which were harvested and already in a warehouse. But for people who don’t know there’s actually a study about how music affect the growth of plants just like sunlight does.
    My team when I was a 6th grader actually conducted an experiment for our research based on that study and passed the results for a local Science Investigatory Project (SIP) Contest.
    It was already 8 years ago but I still remember the general results which turned out that different kinds of music (jazz or rock etc.) actually made the final growth of the plants (which in our experiment were bean sprouts) a bit different from each other. Set A being grown with classical music, while Set B with jazz music and Set C with rock music.
    So this farmer actually has a point, just like other living organisms music also affect plants.

      Funny.
      I thought vegans were more about “minimal impact” living. This is as opposed to “no impact “ living which to me reads as an impossible goal. Industrial animal husbandry is taxing on natural ecosystems and human bodies for that matter. I also doubt vegans are asking everyone to be vegan or vegetarian because it would be silly to ask, say, Arctic and Antarctic diets to be vegetarian. But most people in the temperate and tropical climes easily and pleasurably pull it off.

    I believe there was a study that pointed out how the frequency of the music is what develops growth in plants and not necessarily the genre of music 👂🎶

    i love konnyaku so i'm happy they released this video. konnyaku itself tastes like nothing but it soaks up a lot of the flavor in pot roasts and it tastes great!! sometimes at festivals here there are vendors that sell konnyaku balls cooked in broth that you dip in mustard which tastes great as well. it has no calories but lots of fiber so it's great as diet food or as an ingredient in low calorie desserts.

    Konnyaku jelly is popular in Korea too except it’s called acorn jelly over there, they have a more smooth & sheer finish though. But definitely delicious as a side dish with particularly thinly sliced hot chili, sugar + soy sauce, green onions. Or even in cooked dishes. Similar to tofu. Tasteless sometimes but enhances a dish.
