  • We are experienced a minute of Brokeness as Nigerians a few weeks ago. We had money but certain political decisions made it difficult for us to buy food. In emergency situations like that, you can fall back on Native soup, tasty no matter how low the budget may be.

If you live in Nigeria, you can get from the local spice shop. Outside Nigeria, this is a specie of licorice stick. A very little part of the stick will do. Remember to remove it from the soup after cooking as it tends to keep releasing flavour which may overpower the soup taste.

I actually didn’t spend upto N1k buying things for this soup, most of the ingredients I already had at home and my garden.

I used scent leaves ( 2 different species) the normal one that we usually have in Nigeria and the Thai basil. Both grows in my garden here in Lagos

No wonder I was confused coz both looked like scent leaves to me, especially the one you called basil
