Sony FDR-AX33 4K Camcorder Unboxing and Initial Review!

- Here's me unboxing the Sony FDR-AX33 4K camcorder and my initial review. This 4K camcorder just came out in the last few weeks and is one of the best 4K camcorders under $1000.
UPDATE: I am actually not satisfied with my purchase anymore. Although I did love this camera when I got it, I find the quality of videos not comparable to the ones took with my DSLR. So, for now, I do still recommend this camcorder for home videos but if you want to make high quality videos, this isn't it. I will have an update on this soon.

i have a question if you put a 32gb sd card with high quality of videos in 4k... u think how many hours only? u mentioned on your video is 2 hours em i right? thanks
hi i have the Sony fdr ax33 and I use an external screen when I'm recording videos put on this camera it is saying cannot output screen in 4K mode is there anything I can do so we will output the screen I've tried the settings and cannot see anything thank you
How does the depth of field compare to dslr? Is it somewhat good for focus on yourself and having that blurry background?
i used to have that exact k7 gsxr600. same color too. turned it into a pure track bike.
Quick Question: Does the Camcorder have a power button, or does it automatically turn on and off when the LCD Panel is opened/closed?
I need to sometimes record with the LCD Panel closed.
I know the lower end models have the auto turn off as soon as the Panel is closed.

I have just purchased this camcorder and want to know which software you use for editing.
I have tried light works for edited but having problems (video is slowing down and buffering when trying to edit for youtube.
I have searched the Internet but not found anything to solve this problem.

I just bought this camcorder and I noticed that I couldn't set my IRIS to 1.7 like you did. The lowest I could set the IRIS is 3.7. Can you tell me what I may not be doing right. Thanks for your help.

Very informative video. I purchased the Ax100 last year, only to find out that the camera does not output video in realtime in 4K mode. Once you start recording in 4K mode it shuts down the output signal. We are a drone helicopter biz and need this since we were going to use this on our Octocopter.
My question is, on this camera, when you hit record in 4K, do you get a picture out of either video out ports or does this camera have the same problem? I would really like to use this camera since its smaller and lighter.
+Aerial New York having watched another person's video, comparing the FDR-AX100 vs FDR-AX33 he mentioned NO you can NOT view real-time 4K via the HDMI port. However he said you could with the bigger FDR-AX100 unless I misunderstood him. Maybe its a firmware upgrade to do so. "The-Digital-Digest" (without "-") is the fellow that did the video if you care to search for it as I don't believe you can link other videos anymore. Hope that helps.

Ok if you don't have a 4K tv and just downloaded your raw video, how does it downscale auto to 1080p on my flat panel compute monitor?
automatically converts it into FullHD
Can the screen flip to face whatever you're recording? Also, I know you probably can't, but can you take photos?

Just put my order through Amazon. I know there is the FDR-AX53 coming out at end of March but the 5-Axis system on that doesn't work in 4K only in HD. So not worth the wait.

Hi, I've got the Sony Fdr-Ax33 camera. I've got a problem. When I shoot 20 minutes or longer videos, when I transfer my videos to the computer, my videos are divided into two. Example: 20 minutes video is displayed in two separate files as 10 minutes on the computer. How can I solve this problem. I want my long videos in a single file. I don't want every 10 minutes to be a separate file. I want my long videos in one file. I would be very grateful if anyone helps?

For a 1 Minute video that's 750MB, 2 Minutes is 1500MB or (1.46484375 GB)

BS, you still need a tripod when shooting in 4K because the frame rate is limited to 30 frames, and even the slightest shake is very apparent. I use an FDR-AX100 myself, and it is a fantastic camera, but I wouldn't be without my sticks.
***** Trouble with that is you can't record more than 30 minute clips, as SLR are all limited. The ax100 is a superior product to the ax33, but then again it is double the price. The large sensor makes a huge difference. I was going to use an alpha7 but the time limitation was an issue as there are many times that I need to document meetings or conferences and there can be no gaps in the recording at all, for legal reasons if the video was ever needed to be used as evidence. Cameras that stop every 30 minutes are not acceptable in these situations. When traveling I also don't want to be carrying around a bunch of lenses. The ax100 suits my needs, and delivers a great image, both for shooting video, and even the stills it turns out are great. The f2.8 is plenty bright, and with the large sensor, I get a nice shallow DOF that is almost as good as my DSLR. I played with a GH4, and personally I wasn't really impressed with the unit, but then perhaps I am biased. I have owned many cameras over the years, Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, JVC, and Sony. I keep buying Sony cameras because I find them a cut above every other camera brand I try.
***** I gave up on Canon back in the video camera days when all the capacitors in their expensive 3CCD cameras went bad after 3 years.
Funny how bad a taste that leaves in ones mouth when a 5,000 camera is junk after 3 years, and consider it was used for perhaps 3 hours a week during those 3 years.
My Sony gear never gave me any troubles, and that is why I keep buying Sony.
Yea the AX33 is pretty lacking in dynamic range and that sensor is just really bad in my opinion. I just picked up the Panasonic GH4 which seems like what everyone's been getting these days and I think that's probably a much better option if you want 4K right now. I will say though that if you have really good studio lighting, the AX33 should be pretty good for filming products reviews and stuff in 4K if you don't like all the post-editing work when using something like the GH4 or other 4k Cameras.

Ryan Kwon I think the t3i is better for video than the 1080p on a $300 phone.
