    Really enjoyed your video, well done. I have been bit in the past by not pre-ordering soon enough, and having to wait a long time for the next reprint. In one case - Woodcraft - I waited over 6 month and it was still not available (it still isn't today!), so I ended up switching the game with another one in my order... For that reason, I try not to wait too much before ordering up, sometimes pulling the trigger on a single first impression video, at the risk of regretting it later.

    I've been really enjoying my plays of Evenfall, but have played multiplayer. I can see how the bot might a bit samey for solo gamers. With multiple players, the positive interactions and the battles offer more social moments and tension.

      It's the difference between me and the entire team. I thought I was going to love this, just a miss.

    Love your advice to buy responsibly and the general chat about solo games and the solo experience. Just got my copy of 20 Strong so looking forward to checking that out soon!

      20 Strong...as long as you are OK with dice luck and making risky decision you're going to have a great time. Very thematic and more than i expected.

    It is great to hear different viewpoints from the MvM team on games. Not every game is for everyone, and sometimes it is good to be reminded that games with a ton of hype aren’t going to be automatic successes for everyone, just as games that fall flat for many might be gems for others. Thank you for that reminder. You gave great information, and good reminders to not just blindly follow ratings. Thank you! The game from this year that let me down was The White Castle. I bought it pretty much based on the buzz and hype around it. I think it is a well-designed game, but nothing felt very exciting. There isn’t any real theme, the actions are only fun and interesting when you pull off combos that depend on a lot of variables aligning, and the mechanisms didn’t feel that intriguing in a two-player game that misses the dice stacking. It grew on me with some solo plays, but not enough to keep it for solo, and my husband didn’t care for it at all. It is one I was unsure about after watching play-throughs, because nothing really sparked a huge excitement for me. Again, I gave into that whole fear of missing out thing. I should have followed my own instincts. Another one that let me down was Quacks of Quedlinberg, though when we bought it at Spiel, it did ‘t have a ton of hype yet. We had two plays of me busting on every turn. It wasn’t due to risky play, but rather unfortunate draws early on in almost every round. Neither of these games stayed in the collection. Ark Nova was a hugely successful pre-order from the Spiel crop. As for gems actually picked up at Spiel, I think Keyper and Santa Maria worked out well. If I ever return to Spiel, I will focus on more obscure, smaller titles that will be harder to find at retail after Spiel, and the special personal experiences. Buying Keyper after chatting with the designer was a great experience, as was learning Santa Maria from one of the designers who ran our demo. If it is just waiting in line to grab a huge game before it hits the mass market, I will likely just wait.

      First of all, thanks for commenting on your experiences. One of the reasons I made solo chat is to make sure my opinion was clear on games too since I don't live near everyone (500 miles north). While we generally like the same wide range of games I'm definitely not samey and I love that our team doesn't feel that way. What we are working on is more reviews with multiple people to show the audience our range in opinions.
      My Essen advice and your experience is exactly why I pump fake at ever purchase. I will say playing with the designer or publisher is the best way to determine if I will actually make a purchase. That's the most low risk move. Hype train purchases almost always lead to disappointments....for full MSRP

    As always, i love the chats! I haven't been to a convention before, so I don't have the exact experience, but there are definitely games I preordered that let me down. Village Rails is a good example. I generally like Dunstan and Gilbert. I watched videos and multiple people praised the big crunch in a little box. I've played it a several times now but just haven't experienced joy or excitement, and I don't find myself thinking about it. As you said, I can recognize the good design, but it was just a disappointment for me after hearing the buzz and having the expectations I did

    Great video. I WAS excited for Evenfall, but I can see your points and I will wait or skip--just play 51st state which it reminds me of. Noticed La Granja behind you. I found a super deal on the old version and really enjoy! How do you like Revive, Jeremy?

    • @meeple
      @meeple  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Revive was game of the year for me. The expansion makes it even better. I bought that LaGranja.....still haven't played it for six months....dear lord help me.

    Thank you Jeremy for your thoughts on Evenfall. It was also a bit disappointing for me. The first play I thought it's just the first impression and learning all the different card effects, but it's just not that exciting for me too. For a tableau builder I prefered Ancient Knowledge after a few plays. And there are some games that were big surprises this year especially shorter games like Faraway or the Vale of Eternity. The white castle is a big game in a little box and very satisfying to play although it's tight.

      I'm gonna to finally pull the trigger on white castle. It seems to be universally loved and I gotta get in on that action. Thanks for watching.
