August 31st 1957 was the Malayan Union Independence. Not Malaysia. Malaysia was formed in 1963 September 16, after Sarawak and Sabah joined. The Malayan Union Flag and Malaysia Flag (Jalur Gemilang) are different.

Whenever I think of Merdeka, I always remember the time I was doing a bahasa speaking test in form 1 and the teacher has a picture of a Merdaka parade and asked me what does that celebration mean to me. I said, "It a celebration of how all the different races could live together in peace." And I mean every word of it till this day, that was 17 years ago.
Through the years I learn that there are many people who try to divide us through race and religion to control us. But I believe true Malaysians are not like that; we are not racist, we a tolerant and our diversity is our strength.
Through the years I learn that fighting for our Merdeka is not a one time thing, but something that must be done continuously. I'll never give up on Malaysia, my home. Selamat Hari Merdeka to all Malaysians.

It’s disheartening that thought provoking and good quality videos such as this can’t even get a fraction of views compared to certain cooking videos

I'm not Malaysian but @TheMingThing addressed so beautifully a fundamental issue that plagues many countries today. A single word (e.g. Merdeka) can be so important to so many people but yet understood so differently.
A short but powerful video! Thank you for this!
