    📜 Video Description 📜
Play and Rant is back and in this second episode Pete battles it out in the afternoon 200 ZOOM pool while going on a huge rant about why he can't stand live poker. What does Pete think about the high stakes live stream games like Hustler Live and what are other things that put him off playing live poker regularly?

I think the main thing that attracts poker players to live is that the games are way softer even at much higher stakes. Also if you can find games where you have a big enough edge, you can just avoid spots that have small +ev but are high variance because you'll most likely get lots of way better and less riskier spots. This helps to avoid short term variance even if your long term win-rate may slightly decrease.

Another point is that the larger your winrate the lower your chance of running at a loss over any given amount of hands. If you're a 15BB/100 player live, the chance of you running at a loss after 20k hands is only 1.7%, while if you're only a 2BB/100 player online you need over a million hands to get there. Even 4-tabling 8 hours a day it would take nearly 400 days to get to 1 million hands. So it really depends on how big of a gap there is between your winrates and how much volume you can put in online.

A Golf tournament is exactly like a live MTT.
You spend an entire day with dudes you have nothing in common with. 95% of the time you are either walking, looking at others doing shit, searching balls in the woods, waiting for the group ahead finishing the aformentioned activities. When it's time to hit the ball you channel all your GTO spirit (years in the practice range studying stance, grip, angles, weight distribution, tempo, ball positioning, air density, altitude) after debating between a 7 Iron with the ball positioned 3 inches towards your left foot or an 8 iron with the ball in the center (blockers?), just to wack a ball which might easily land in a 50 feet radius in EVERY direction from where you aimed at, because you studied a strategy useful for Tiger Woods but a little worthless for a 20 Handicap.
All of that to hit a couple of decent shots out of 90 (on a good day), which is frankly the equivalent of winning a flip with 20 bb preflop after 5 hours of folding.
Golf is way better though, cause once in a while you get to bang a rich cougar (implied odds?).

I agree....I stopped playing cash at the casino because the regulars were a bunch of fucking idiots. Even though I was winning I just thought the dreariness and irritability of it all wasn't worth the money. They'd talk about hands constantly as well which I hate....I thought the advantage of live would be the social side of it but no....they were poker nerds and totally obsessed which I am not. I like poker as a game and I'm pretty good....Good enough to make a bit of money but what is it about poker that it attracts some of the weirdest most anti social people on the planet. Stick with golf!

I stopped playing online. I play live on Fridays and sometimes on Saturdays. I play like 15% of hands in a 10 handed table. In the meantime, i watch people's body language and try to figure them out.
I look for patterns when they check their cards, waiting for action, when they bet, after they bet. I look at their hands, face, gaze direction to figure out interest and stress etc. I try to reverse engineer if they are strong, marginal or weak.
That is the only good part about live poker i think.

  • @frazzledazzle89

i recently played live for the first time in a long time, it was boring for the most part but i did enjoy analysing people, the part i found hardest was trying to keep count of the pot and other stacks every hand, it was mentally fatiguing. I think the players who like to talk or try get in your head are more suited to live. I do much prefer playing cash live though, with MTT's i just can put in super high volume online, also when i bluffing my arse off and i'm all in i can just hide under my desk, can't do that live can i.

What I love about live poker is that you do get to meet so many random people. When your at a 9 handed table its almost guaranteed you can get a conversation going with several people at the table and just have fun. While I am there to make money I have built many great relationships with many different people who I would have never met otherwise. I think this just comes down to do you enjoy talking to random strangers or not, and if you dont I can totally see how live poker would be a pain.

Here in Nevada, they limit the online possibilities so the poker rooms can continue to make money despite the high rake structure. On the table chat, while annoying AF, it is valuable to assess a particular player's strategy.
One thing that I find especially weird in live poker that you don't see online is when a player wins the pot without showing down their cards, they will show one of their hole cards. Usually, this is to show you that "you made a good fold," like showing the top pair or an Ace preflop. Any thoughts on this from a mental perspective??
I'd love to see a video on "Pete Clarke: Goat Farmer and Cat Parent." A background summary of how you got to this point in your life.
Finally, it would be great if you and Melissa could make a "response" video on why she likes live poker
On a side note, I took up bridge in middle school and played through university for a penny a point, but I never found a regular partner in graduate school, so I dropped it. I do agree that it's a better game than poker. Do you have any bridge YT that you follow?

Live poker is infinitely easier to beat than online...that is why people play. You can easily tell the kind of person you're playing against live...especially at stakes lower than 5/10. You're also discounting the game that is live poker. It's a different game. You can study the math and the "23.4 % of the time we're supposed to raise here"...but can you 3 barrel bluff a significant amount of money and not care? I respect the live players. Poker was made to play in person. Online is great to get better at the game - and if you can make a living doing it (like make 300k+ a year) ... awesome.

You sound like you are the people you talk about because if what you say is true you should definitely be playing live.

The quality of the company live at the hippo is appalling. I'd rather play £20 banter stakes with my mates and get pissed than spend 30 mins chatting to the people there. I had a chap bragging about having worked at Lehman brothers during the collapse, whilst he donk bet 150% pot in a squeezed pot.

Put another way, your win rate is their mistakes you don't make minus the rake. If they are making these gargantuan mistakes and broadcasting them, you win. Do you like money?

If you think there's nothing to do at live poker... You suck at live poker and don't deserve to play the (live poker) game.
    I kid. But.
The only time you get to rest is during shuffling and tanks. The rest of the time there's more happening than you can possibly pick up. A six hour session is exhausting. Hand placement, timing tells, speech tells, interaction levels with TV, food, other players... Players' styles change wildly from hour to hour. You do not get to "figure out how they play" and then retreat into your phone.

60K live hands needs to be in 2-3 years. I played 4-5 times a week for a year and it was like max. 30-40 hands pr. hour. Winrate was very high like 90% of sessions. But I like online poker a lot more.

      @krisamagus1 Před 9 měsíci

of course. you won 90% of sessions, with a high winrate. But you like online poker a lot more. Who are you trying to fool here? I believe not one word of yours is true. You are authentic and posses as much integrity as a run over cat. God...

theres better things I could be doing with my time at night then winning 2-300 an hour? Live is where the fish are. You def dont need good cards (vpip 20% LOL) when players are opening about 40% and calling all three bets. I play live because its EASY and juicy. Why do you spend so much time grinding online, there easy ass money to be won. Ill take my game selection skill over your GTO knowledge any day.

Ah, Peter, what you don't seem to understand is the pleasure of condescension. As C.S. Lewis put it, when he plays with his cat, he can be very cat-like, but his cat can never be human-like. Since God isn't real, what is our frame of reference for God? What is the one thing God can do that actually defines him in our frame of reference... as God? That, my friend, is condescension. Becoming a human for shits and giggles. Or to redeem humanity. Tomato tomahtoe.
So, you can sit down at a table with 8 other men, and (especially if you've studied live reads) obliterate them. Every time. You might think I'm a total donk, but live, I have just won 18 out of my last 20 sessions and that's not abnormal. Your wine rate could legitimately be 50bb/100. To dominate is human; to condescend is divine.

Online poker is rigged, and people could theoretically be on a multi phone call and share cards with one another. It's way easier to cheat at online, so that's why live is better. Poker is a game of people and behavior.

Hilarious 😂 I think I’d pay to sit at a live table with you - just for entertainment value - to watch you squirm! I’d definitely say stuff like “yeah, I’m normally a button clicker but I feel like I have more of a skill edge live . . . “
    “I’m going to charge you for your draw . . . “ 😂😜🥸
