  • The 14th of May 2020 was the 50th anniversary of Mickey Doherty's death. A travelling tinsmith, Mickey was known far and wide for his skill as a fiddler, particularly all around South West Donegal were he frequently traveled. He was the older brother of the more well known John Doherty, also a travelling tinsmith and expert fiddler who roamed the byroads of SW Donegal visiting friends, plying his trade and playing music. To mark the 50th anniversary of Mickey's passing some locals gathered at his graveside at Fintown to play a few tunes. The big white haired man in the video is another famous fiddler, Jimmy Campbell, from the Glen of Glenties. Jimmy knew Mickey well from his youth for he often stopped for a night in Jimmy's home. Jimmy and his late brother Vincie learned many a tune from both Mickey and John Doherty, when they would stop for a night in their family home. No worries. Poor Jimmy passed away in January of this year. I'm only now getting used to driving past his house and no lights on inside. He was some man!
