    I really appreciate the quote you put up about wearing the special stuff. I started trying to live by this quote this year, but I will do even better in 2024. My husband and I just celebrated our 19th wedding anniversary last Friday and I wore a necklace he gave me at our wedding. When I saw the photos, it dawned on me that it had been 12 or 13 years since I'd worn it because I always considered it a special occasion statement piece. But looking at the photo, where I'm in nice dark wash jeans, a red T shirt, and a dark blue leather moto jacket, I can see that the Baroque Pearl and Ruby heart necklace looks fabulous and perfect. I realized I need to keep wearing my nice pieces, along with wearing a dressy top with jeans just to walk the dog around the neighborhood and put on one of my leather jackets just to go to the market. I've got to quit saving the good stuff for special occasions because every day that I'm on this planet is a special occasion.

    I worked in retail for many year when I was younger and also found that the quality of menswear was better than the women's. I came to the conclusion that most men are buying staple pieces that they expect to last longer so they they will buy fewer pieces but spend a little more for them. Women on the other hand are usually more impulse buyers and expect to change their wardrobe more often so they will buy for fashion of the moment or a special occasion that they think they won't wear very often so they will spend less on possibly cheaper quality for this reason.
    Let me know if you think I am wrong but this is how retailers think...

    In my 50s, I wore midi skirts, but my (9-years) younger sister finally convinced me to wear my minis again, too, she said “such legs are too good not to show off”. She was right, I got my minis back out and even bought a few new leather ones! I still love midis, knee-length skirts and maxis, but I’m so glad she encouraged me not to blindly follow those age-appropriate “rules”. I was blessed with long, slender and shapely legs like my grandmother’s, her legs looked better in her 80s than most teenagers’ do today. We don’t win the DNA lottery for every feature, but we always do for at least one or two, so show them off! Age 63, but I was over-sensitive to this agist criticism because I was criticized for wearing a mini skirt when I was only about 25, when minis first cane back in during the 80s by an old female relative. But, who cares what she thinks?

    You are probably one of very few who mention how you feel in your clothes is as important as how you look.
    In regards to why menswear is better quality, I think its because they expect their clothes to last longer and wear better.
    Women's clothes are being dictated more by trends, so a lot manufacturers obviously think they can use cheaper fabrics because it will be out of style in 6 months or less. Thats just my opinion.

    • @AdelineLoke
      @AdelineLoke  Před 5 měsíci

      It's all about how it makes you feel in my opinion! Someone can tell you that black 'washes you out' but if you love wearing that colour and it makes you feel great, then why would you stop?
      That seems to be what most think. Women's fast fashion cycles so fast and so the quality is worse 😞

Worrying very recently about wearing sequins to a work Christmas dinner as everyone thought it would be fun, I mentioned to her that I am not a sequin person at all so she said to me ''mum, be the shepherd not the sheep'' so as I wore my gorgeous White Company tailored black velvet shirt, I felt good and very comfortable instead of following the trend of sequins for the evening!

    Sound advice in my opinion. I also agree with your claim that men's clothes are often better quality. This may have something to do with the fact that women do usually shop much more often than men, so we tend to be more likely victims of the "disposable" wear trends. The best way around this would be to make sure to focus on quality rather than quantity.
    Also, the marketing people are quite happy to see women in semi-transparent tops, so they try to make us believe that's what we want too 🙄

I'm 68 years old and I've always loved fashion my whole life. But I have struggled with weight issues my whole life. So sadly I was limited as to what I could wear. I recently lost 120 lbs. And I'm finally able to enjoy fashion to its full potential. So you can be sure I'm going to be doing that. I am a classic minimalist timeless style lady and always have been. I had bought men’s pants and joggers. They never worked because the hip and crotch are cut differently. Wearing them I felt uncomfortable. Men’s tee shirt is always too long and the shoulder too wide (even XS). Sweatshirt sleeve is also too long (I am 5’3”). The only men’s item I bought that I like is an Urban Outfitters bomber jacket (not padded). It has the right amount of oversized, not like me wearing my brother’s cloths (I used to do that growing up).

    LOVE that brown button down shirt! I think that mens items are often better quality because they buy much less than we do. Clothing is less disposable to them than it is to women and therefore they will be looking for higher quality. A man will repeat wear his t shirt / button down shirt MANY times more than a woman will and he is therefore looking to buy something more durable.

    I do like to match (more or less) footwear and accessories, especially if I’m wearing something like a print dress. With prints and patterns, I prefer the way a same-color group of accessories plays a more supportive, less dominant, role in the outfit. But, I’m no slave to the matching “rule” either, I agree that other combinations can look great, too. Of course, I love adding a bag in an interesting, but basic, color like green, blue, red or burgundy, instead of strictly neutrals all the time. Playing with accessories is a big part of the creativity of building outfits, especially at the moment when most women, including me, are wearing simple, neutral, solid-color separates.

    Amazing video - so intelligent. I love the subtle critical thinking, e.g., that "dressing your age" is also linked to misogyny. Or, that somehow some days are more important than other days and hence we need to save our nice things for those infrequent days, when really we are just as special and important every single day, and if we feel like wearing something "extravagant" on any old boring day, we should just follow what we feel. I like that a lot of your approach seems to be about following your intuition and not getting bogged down by what is normative. I've subscribed!

    Women are expected to “go through” their wardrobe quicker because we “shop a lot”, so that’s why women’s quality is sometimes lower. I exclusively wear men’s tshirts when I’m doing fun graphic ones because the material is always thicker and the design is on better. Across the board in every brand I’ve tried.

    I too purchased the white and black pair of the Adidas Samba because I love them they look good with everything and they're comfortable . Enjoy what you have don't obsess about everybody else wearing them. You know how many people have Chanel bags does that mean you're not going to use yours? Don't be silly now 😂.

    I think that because women are statistically more likely to buy more clothes we're targeted not just with trends but also Sales and lower quality clothes so that we have to buy even more sooner. (If I have a good quality item that last me for years then marketers and fashion companies will make less money off of me) I think thats why mens clothes tend to be stronger, less sheer, and longer lasting. 🙂

    Totally agree with you about the differences one can perceive between men’s and women’s clothing, Adeline. I will often resort to the men’s department because it better caters to my preferred fit and colour choices. Colours offered to women are often paler and more ‘girly’. As for the quality of the material and the way they are made, men’s clothes definitely get a better deal. My belief is that because generally men don’t shop as frequently as women, they are afforded better quality to give longevity to their clothes. Women’s clothes are seen as more disposable and high-turnover.

    Men’s clothing is usually better quality because men’s fashion cycles traditionally move slower than women’s so the spend is higher from the buyers each season.

    The rule of not wearing white in the winter is more practical. If you live in a snowy place or muddy England, wearing white might not be something you want to wear because when snow become slush, it's a bitch to get the stains out :P Also, if you're on the ski mountain, wearing white can be dangerous because if anything happens and you're stuck, it makes you harder to find :p

    The Adidas Samba is such an interesting one for me: they are and always have been for over 15 years(!) one of my favourite favourite pair of shoes! I’ve always owned a black pair and a white on white pair special edition from about 10 years ago. When worn out, I re-purchased. Having said that, it also happens that I am a person who despises to wear the same as everyone else. I never understood the logic what is so interesting that everyone wears the same pair of shoes or handbags or cardigan, or you name it that is the latest trend at the minute. What is the message behind that? I got the memo? I can behave like a sheep in a herd? So when I saw this Sambas trend arising, I literally went into a grieving process 😂😂😂 I am not even kidding. I said to myself okay now the same thing will happen to them like it did years ago to the black-and-white Vans: everyone and their mother will be wearing them. And I tossed my black pair in the donation bin. Mind you at a moment in time where they were constantly sold out every where apparently. But I was just too frustrated to even bother and sell them. I kept my special edition white pair though. Meanwhile, I almost made my peace with a trend: Due to the trend, Adidas brought back the original pair in and white and green, which I have been chasing after years and years beforehand, when no one talked about the Samba, and never could get my hands on them. Of course I bought them now and I am quite happy sure I will still be wearing them up to my 80s 😂 but whenever I wear them out now and someone is making a remark on how oh you too got the sambas I just bite my tongue. Don’t get me started. 😂

    The only other reason for not wearing white jeans in winter is dog walking in the mud!

  • @milaberi9491
    @milaberi9491 Před 5 měsíci

    Yes, men's clothing is actually of higher quality. The fact is that men are more picky consumers. They don't buy clothes out of emotion (mostly). They are more inclined to be practical and analyze why they need certain clothes. Quality is what makes a man choose a particular item because he knows he will wear it for a long time. They do not like to buy things (in their majority) as women do, they do not follow fashion as much, so quality is the main trump card in the hands of manufacturers to attract male customers.

    Misogyny? Seriously…. In my 56 years on this earth, I can hardly remember a man speak badly about the amount of skin showing or not showing on me. However, I have had heard plenty of women talking horribly about other women about the amount of skin showing or not showing .
    We women are horrible to each other, especially little girls. This needs to stop this before we blame it on the men.

    I started watching your video because I liked your appearance and was interested in what you had to share. Some of which was good. Although, once you implied that misogyny was maybe the reason for why we’re supposed to dress a certain way, you lost me. FYI: men’s shirts are made with thicker material, because men are usually rougher on their clothing than women. Women’s t shirts and blouses are sometimes made sheer or light weight to reflect femininity or sexiness.
