    Episode 361 of Love At First Scent
    This was a CZcams Live broadcast streamed on Saturday 15th April 2023. Unscripted. Unedited. Unrehearsed.
    In this episode, I unsealed and reviewed a vintage (circa 1985) bottle of Dior Eau Sauvage that I recently found at a local charity shop.
    Introduction 0:00
    vintage Dior Eau Sauvage (Edmond Roudnitska) 4:55
    current Dior Eau Sauvage 17:17
    Here's the blotter update:
    - This may be hard to believe, but at the drydown stage, my newer bottle of ES isn't bad at all: quietly leathery-wood. But the vintage is superior in terms of complexity. There's just a lot more going on in the older juice, from the mosses, to the discreet florals to the lingering citruses. It's a three-dimensional portrait of masculinity, as opposed to the flatter image from the current juice.

    [* In November 2020, I was commissioned to complete a writing project by the brand Amouage. The project may or may not have a bearing on the scents released by the brand from 2021 onwards. At the time of writing this note, my intention is to continue mentioning and reviewing all Amouage scents released up to the end of 2020, except in posts/articles where perfumes from several brands are included and presented as part of a selection/collection (eg ‘best of’ posts and lists).]

    It made me happy to see your joy 😊 Happy the perfume happened upon a perfume lover and not a scalper who would jack up the price on ebay.

    Eau Sauvage was my signature fragrance between 1992 and 2002, loved it!
    Lots of good memories, I was in my twenties.
    I remember it was really long lasting on clothes!
    I bought mini bottles of 10 ml from that era(with brown caps) recently and I love them: the opening is very alcoholic but afterwards the magic happens… longevity is not crazy, maybe because it’s old bottles.
    The current formula is more focused on the citrus, and very short lived.
    NB: back in the days I really didn’t like the Extreme version (too medicinal).
    A fantastic limited flanker has been Eau Sauvage Fraîcheur Cuir!
    Recently I switched to Grey Vetiver by Tom Ford: same booster vibes and last all day.

    Oh, it sounds just amazing! I would suspect that the mossy character has become more pronounced during the ageing process. I find vintage scents often share this special charm.
    I would also consider that the florals may have faded a bit with time. I doubt that toxic masculinity is a possibility with this marvellous classic unless one would be willing to suggest that all the women who took to wearing this perfume already since the 60s would have happily adorned themselves with this negative side of masculinity, even unconsciously. I own several vintage Roudnitskas and by no means would I have gotten anything of the sort from them. They are far too elegant and well balanced for appearing toxic in any way.(Of course it could be possible that the composition in the 80s has been tweaked a little bit towards the fashionable taste of the time)
    Congrats on this beautiful find!

    • @Persolaise
      @Persolaise  Před rokem +1

      Ah yes -- thank you for making this superb point. Tons of women DID wear ES (and Habit Rouge too, as it happens), which suggests, as you say, that the scent somehow managed to speak to both sexes.

    How fun, I love it when you show a vintage find. I have Dior Eau Fraiche, also called Eau de Cologne Fraiche and the scent was intact on opening but I keep it in the fridge and use it in summer. It's perfectly unisex and I got a 100ml splash for £10 IIRC.

    Wonderful find! Eau Sauvage has always been a top 5 fragrance for me, probably top 3. I was recently in Rome and stumbled upon a beauty/shave/purfume shop that had some vintage fragrances like Eau Suavage, Jules, Chanel and Roches. I was so happy to find Eau Savage and Jules, but then I couldn't find it in me to purchase either one at the price. Both were around 350/400 euros Each. As much as I love the classics, I'll have to remember them as such. Thank you for the review and I'm so happy for your excitement.

    Wow, Persolaise, a vintage Eau Sauvage! I could smell it in my minds eye as soon as you showed the box, it was very much around when I grew up in the 1980's. My best friend at the time wore both the classic and the extreme, I always bought Chanel pour Monsieur, which I found a bit more subtle and sophisticated. We must heb been the best smelling teenagers on the block!
    And the color of that juice!!
    A very good alternative to vintage Eau Sauvage is Whip by Le Galion. You should try it if you don't know it, it resembles Eau Sauvage very much, with a very yellow, lemony opening (fresh like a sorbet) and then tarragon, jasmine and a woody base. Very well done and it also has that pleasant vintage vibe....
    Thank you for sharing and till the next!

    Imo, AdP and Villoresi Colonia are still macho masculine in there current formulation.
    I like it when a sophisticated masculine scent is distinctly masculine.

    In my view (I am still under 30) rather than becoming less tolerant of overt masculinity, designer scents for both men and women have become more juvenile and brash since the 90s. I seem to be the minority but I can't help but feel patronised by the sweet pink juices that are meant to cater to my gender, always emphasising "girlishness" never "womanliness". The classic green chypres seem unthinkable as "feminine" scents to many now, and it seems almost to be a step backwards in gender norms.
    I don't know the men's designer landscape as well, but it seems as far as "toxic masculinity" goes, the obsession with obnoxious "beast mode" fragrances seems a worse offender than classic sophisticated masculines.

    • @Persolaise
      @Persolaise  Před rokem

      Yes, you make a very astute point here, thank you. Feminine has become 'girly'... and masculine has become homogeneous.

    What kind of Eau Sauvage is that, EDT or EDP (or Parfum)? I've tried both the modern Eau Sauvages, the EDT and the Parfum (if I remember correctly, I think it's straight Parfum, don't have it here with me at the moment). There is a complete world of difference between them. The EDT was a colossal let-down: pure, thin Lemon Drops candy from start to finish, utterly linear and superficial. Not unpleasant, but then Lemon Drops aren't unpleasant either, but who wants to smell like them all day? So then I got the Parfum. Well! Night and day, utterly. The Parfum came through with all the levels and depth and unfolding nuances throughout the day that I was hoping for, and, yes, starting with the wonderful lemoniness but, oh,so much more. I gave away my EDT version as I couldn't possibly use it after the Parfum. Which is my long way of saying that it always mystifies me why online reviewers insist on talking generically about "Eau Sauvage" as if there's only one variety of it or as if we're all simply supposed to know automatically which they're talking about.

    • @Persolaise
      @Persolaise  Před rokem +1

      The one in today’s video is the EDT. For the longest time, this was the only variant available, which is probably why most people don’t specify which one they’re talking about. Versions such as the ‘Parfum’ are much more recent additions.
