Jeff Watson guitar solo from Japan tour '83

- This is the greatest performance ever, too.
- Hudba
Jeff and Brad are still my favorite guitar duo.
Sadly underrated guitarist who is miles above 99% of the hacks being passed off as guitarists.
so underrated, he is such a great player.
@A Baller Agreed. This video was suggested by someone but theres no 'meat' to this solo. He hit a lot of bum notes as well, maybe he meant it but they sure sounded like ass to me. It has no depth, it just doesnt grab the ear? Hard to explain.
@@tomasotreasaigh111 It has no melody, just a lotta notes
Watson never got his due! Dude can shred.
I remember reading about guitar and keyboard virtuoso, Tony MacAlpine who had great respect for Watson - mentioning him as unique. MacAlpine had him as a featured guest soloist on his own Maximum Security from 1987.
Who cares. McAlpine owes the White man for anything he knows Got it cuck
McAlpine is one of the all-time underappreciated musicians! 🤘
This is what a rock n roll show is all about! This guy has BALLS!!
When playing guitar actually meant something?:-/ I'm not saying there's no good players but the 80s was what guitar was all about!
The 80's was the too many "I wannabe a Van Halen clone" decade. In terms of guitar playing innovation.
0sum gamezzz I would somewhat agree with you brother? But , as far as creativity and at least trying to cone up with their own style guitarists back then we’re unique. Today’s guitar players wanna be fast!!! And that’s not what guitar is about IMO. Of my opinion stinks like all others? Lol 🤘🎸🤘 I respect your opinion though.
0sum gamezzz , also , I don’t think Jeff Watson was one of the greats? Just a good player.
@@pcycosocial I'll take "Uneducated Opinions" for $1000, Alex
@@Harmonic14 Your joke is as dead as Alex.
Oh my...It's so sad to know that we don't have such awesome performance like that nowadays. :/
Try Daniel Gottardo
I truly miss the 80s
:04 "I GOT this!" hahahhaha He looked like a little kid there.
So many people on here having a go at him...he was a great player with NR and this solo was of it’s time. He went on to play even better. I’ve just been watching him jamming with Steve Vai in 2016 and he played great ffs.
RIP Jani Lane, you were an amazing guitar player.
Lol I was thinking the same thing
Or Leif Garrett
They wish
He was in his early 20's here! Amazing

Jeff Watson has always been my favourite member of Night Ranger! He truly is one of the most unbelievably impressive guitarists in the world, but unfortunately he has always been too underrated.
Jeff Watson rocks!!!
~Dutch
@A Baller No he's underrated. Fuck yourself.
@@davidhenrylake2047 sure is dude your right Jeff rocks
That's some smokin' hot playin' right there. Giant tone, great touch.
I would have to say that Jeff Watson is my favorite guitar player from the 80's.
It's hard to believe it was 30 years ago that this performance was recorded. Still sounds great!
wicked two handed tapping
I think so,too.
This is awesome perfomance.
thank you.
There's Eddie and Randy then there's this guy. He's a bonafide Master.
Idc what anyone says im confident he was the first to do 3 and 4 finger tapping this solo is truly insane for its time
Steve Hackett, Genesis. 1972-73 era, in particular. Maybe look into it, if you like that stuff. You're welcome.
fabulous!!!!
I don't get why some of you are nagging on Jeff's playing here. He sounds great, and he is obviously doing more than just scales. I don't think you all watched the video until the end either. I mean, how good does a guitarist have to be for y'all to be happy? Jeff Watson was extremely innovative with his 8 finger fret tapping technique. I'm sure there were probably guitarists that did it before him, but not like him. The only reason he wasn't "influential" is because he wasn't that popular. Other guitarists at the time were more popular thanks to the record companies, news media, and major label promotion deals backing them up. I would choose Jeff Watson over any of the "soulless" shredders we see a lot of today. Jeff Watson is a real guitar player. I just don't get some of you trolls. Like, let's see you assholes pick up a guitar and play. I bet you wouldn't even sound a micrometer as good as Jeff does in this video.
Would have sounded better if he used an Eventide. Rounds off the notes instead of making them sound clipped.
A guitar player like me notices this.
Yes,I think popularity took off them from Japan at first.
Even now, they are popular in Japan!
Thank you.
Japan would applaud anything,
Sounds like Rob Chapman but with smidge. less wanking. I think he'd flag his own songs for copyright.
Just insane awesomeness🎸!
Yes,that time was good.
There was real rock music.
Pure rock royalty.
He looks sooooo high here.
Nice gitar solo👈😃
nice!!!!!!!
I dont care what anyone else says, Jeff Watson is an Awesome guitar player. Up there with Randy Rhoads.
love it
Yay JEFF!!!
I'm love him ,too!
I thought it was going to be just tapping, but man.. everything after was incredible. That lick at 2:48 killed me, I've only heard that kind of ferocity from DeMartini or early EVH
Agreed. Ripping...would have liked someone to consider Jeff over Brad for the Ozzy fill in gig. That would have been epic!
Shit, I noticed that VERY lick at 2:38...I was surprised you mentioned THAT lick, BECAUSE...ITHAT lick is about the ONLY lick on this vid that I can play.
Kind of gave me Jake E Lee Vibes
My man world class miss you Jeff your brother Biff
I like solos on chords and through a progression of chords in a group context more than flashy cadenzas, but maybe I'm just getting old.
Nah, you're getting a better taste, definitely not old :)
Me too. There's a difference between musicianship and gymnastics.
Modes9 Then why are you on this video, you dumb fuck?
David Henry Lake
Maybe he wanted to see if _this_ solo had any of those qualities bozo.

Just the way the man *holds* a guitar is musical. What a persona. Jeff Watson is one of those rare birds that was born to play guitar.
Bullshit...
Sooooo underrated.
Wow man killer stuff that you play that will have a great influence on the average guitar player
Whole lotta critics on here…I enjoyed the solo for what it was…a historical record of a playing style and technique where Jeff Watson was at the time.
Sure, there are some parts that are maybe not as tight as they could be, but I put that down to the live environment and fatigue rather than lack of ability
And as for some people saying the solo is “tasteless”, well, it was the 80s and Stadium Rock. Half the fun was being as outrageous and OTT as possible. Jeff’s having fun and playing to the nosebleeds
Plus, whilst Night Ranger wasn’t my scene, they wrote some good songs and could sing…it wasn’t just a couple of musos playing over uninspired vamps like some shredders. The songs hold up without the shredding
He also didn't want to drop and break that gold top. He'd rather hurt himself.
I like this solo. I hate crystal clean playing. This is a great solo.
You had to have the guitar solo in the 80s. It was a Nuno called it. The guitar Olympics
40 years later, 🤘👊💨
MASTERY.

For some mysterious reasons, I was reminded of the amazing Andy Latimer of Camel. If he had decided to become a heavy metal guitarist, not melodic art rock genius...
The melodic snow goose theme beats everything here 🎵
@@transparent6748 My favorite album by Camel is Moonmadness. I have recently completed Camel CD collection (Camel - Stationary Traveller) by adding Nude, I can see~, and Single factor. Except the last one, all are amazing or at least enjoyable.
@@youngchool ..yeah I just listen shortly to the moonmadness album..noticed there’s some vocals on it..and very much same style as the snow goose album..no wonder since they’re from 75 and 76 lol. I only know the snow goose album which I bought back in the 80s on LP..true masterpiece...okay I’ll give it a try and soon listen to the whole album on Spotify...have a great day 👍
@@transparent6748 Hello! I'd say Snowgoose and Moonmadness are their crowning achievements. Many think their 2nd, Mirage is their best. It is a very powerful record and possibly their most ambitious (along with Snowgoose) album but I love Camel because their amazing melodies. Their Debut album is also very cool - a little shy and meek? But very charming because of that. Try 'Never let go', Their concert staple.
Many including myself think Doug Ferguson was THE camel bassist. After he was let go sadly, very capable Richard Sinclair came in. Rain dance and Breathless are different but! I think they are wonderful! As samplers, try Uneven song and Make me smile, Echoes or ah both albums are full of wonderful tracks if different from SG or MM albums.
These albums+ Stationary Traveller are essential! Try these first. Now what? I think I can see your house.. and Nude have their moments. The former offers Ice, Hymn to her, and Nude has ~15min of amazing music! It is almost painful to say but...The single factor is the only album I don't find that enjoyable... But I think they were caving in under the pressure from the Record companies. Hey, you guys are talented and promising only if you make you music a little 'easier' for everybody!! How about some singles PLEASE? Hence the album title! Still it has wonderful Sasquatch! Camelogue is good too. Good luck Transparent, they wouldn't disappoint you!

Or order 2cd 'Lunar Sea' best(?) Collection for $10. Very good selection IMO, except the ones chosen from 'Nude' album.
I wanna see Jeff's version TODAY.. BAD ASS
I just watched on a Randy Rhoades tribute. I think it was dome for a memorial day weekend concert.
I think Jeff evolves his work and is performing it.
What do you mean spinal tap?
I never knew Mick Jones was such a technically proficient guitar player.
He did not suck! At all! LOL Love the guitar too!
Bad goldtop w black pickguard tuff 70d look
@@JohnViguerie a Gibson Les Paul has the best tone my favorite guitar 🎸
No one said he sux
So Nigel!
Watson and Gillis could always play, if not spectacularly.
"Hey Jeff, can you do sweep picking?"......"No, but I can do this".........mic drop
ssupeeer
Why isn't he in night ranger anymore??
For all knocking this, compare it to any fast rock playing from 5 or 6 years before.
What does that mean, though?
That this is better than Van Halen? Led Zeppelin? Alex Lifeson? Hell, even Ted Nugent?
Or Brian May, Frank Marino, Ronnie Montrose, and Tony Iommi, among others?
Playing fast is merely a tool - one tool of many - in playing guitar. It's not the only thing that defines a great guitarist.
Watson was okay. This solo was...well...guitar solos in concerts don't really mean all that much. They're mostly inserted in there to give the rest of the band a short break, and to drive some fans bonkers. Ultimately, it's the songs that matter.
Keep in mind that guys like Vai, Satrianni, and Malmsteen looked at Brian May as a hero to them, and May looked at Jeff Beck as a huge influence, who looked at Les Paul as HIS influence, and also he loved Hendrix, and it just goes down the line.
@@rklewis2 yeah and Les Paul was faster more interesting and could out play all of them what’s your point? This cat is taping beautifully w 8 fingers.... pretty fin good
@@metaphoria3 My point was in my post. I'm not going to repeat myself for you.
@@rklewis2 well I agree w allot of your original points especially the songs are what really matter etc
I know your saying.
But I like the 80's guitar sound&players.
I think those are trial and error.
Yea and slash is a good guitar player, uffff
Get back in to NIGHT RANGER JEFF! You and BRAD! That would be awesome!
I hate that he left Night Ranger.
That man right there was the real guitar talent in Night Ranger! Don't get me wrong, Brad kicks ass too but Jeff IS THE MAN!!!
Makes me wanna burn HIS guitar.
I hate to say it, but this sucked at the beginning. The 8 finger thing never made sense to me because it is just a scale, and he just plays up and down, up and down. However, the Don't Tell Me You Love Me lick that is thrown in at 2:55 is still epic to this day!
Sounds like a bunch of controlled chaos but is good.
There were alot of players that did this stuff back then. Alot of players that you never guessed were able to. But alot of them did not want to be worshipped about it. That is why we feel they were underrated. Not because they weren't "chosen".
Name one other guitar player who was skilled at eight finger technique. You're full of shit. You picked the wrong page lol...
Your types confuse me. You insist on being willfully ignorant. What is the attraction to being not intelligent lol?
I guess Eddie started it all!🤘
I realize unless you were a real guitar fan in the 80s you didn't know about guys like Stanley Jordan that did the two handed tapping and chording almost exclusively. This dude is flashy and impressive and well known because he was in a popular band. For every guy like Jeff there were numerous players in a relative underground scene that could play circles around the "rock stars" on MTV. It was a daunting time to try and be a guitar player in a band, that I assure you.
That guy was good , back when bet played actual music.
@@guddergo7116 If you were lucky enough to see him live then you saw what fire in the fingers could do ...Many unsigned talents and COUCH players are some of the GREATEST PLAYERS....
oh god, its 2013 and you didnt know about spinal tap? do a little research, watch the movie and you can relate to this guy jeff
Cheap Trick and Night Ranger were popular here in the USA. That being said, they were HUGE in Japan !
gar samuelson on guitar?
His tones amazing can anyone explain it
It depends where you hold your pick, the position you play, the angle of attack, the amount of palm mute, and settings and delay to match your playing style and speed. He doesn't play with much vibrato.
I much prefer someone like Ted Nugent.
@@cammontreuil7509 wow I think you may be the only one in comments who understands I take it you play guitar too

i bet that this was the guy ozzy wanted for his band when he heard night ranger... but he got brad as a mistake. i love brads playing, but i can reckon a style here thats similar to rrhoads...
I see a LOT of Randy here. Look, guitar, style. Look up Randy's solo with Quiet Riot. Stage presence too.
Wow....I've never thought of that possibility. But it's right there. I never put it all together until I read your comment. I will never look at the situation the same. Just wow.....the mind boggles at all the things that could have been different in the rock world if it had been Jeff not Brad that got the call.

I like Watson, but this was mostly pretty directionless stuff. He actually can be compositionally quite good.
This is one of the craziest guitar solos ever for 83 lol
@@jyejye1077 By modern standards it's pretty messy. As far as being one of the craziest for it's era (if I understand your meaning), probably in the rock genre, yes. Still, others were out there who were far, far crazier. Check this out for example (same era):

I wouldn't necessarily call these scales, in a strict sense. Unless you mean some kind of chromatic stuff there at the start.
In 83' oh it cool
