  • Are online "unsearched" wheat penny rolls a good bargain? How about Penny Rolls with GREAT end coins?
    In this video I was given a roll of wheat pennies that a seller from eBay wanted me to open up on my channel. I noticed they were a new seller and I asked the seller to NOT send me anything but a random roll from their lots.
    The roll sent one was of their "Double Indian Head Cent Ender rolls." I will let you all make your own decisions as to the value in the roll, but the seller does have them and other items available at their eBay Store:

      Rob, I think it is good that you do this for sellers at times. I seen some comments below dogging wheat cent roll sellers on ebay. I too sell wheat cent rolls on ebay, mine are actually from my pappys collection that I inherited. I have 100% positive feedback and multiple return customers, new and seasoned collectors. The only thing I do with mine is put them in a better wrapper if the old wrapper is to worn to survive usps mailing. If you ever want to buy a "Truly" unsearched roll you can find me on ebay at Txamtam74-0. I sold like crazy before I was dianosed with cancer to people like APC Coins who used my rolls to fill albums they sell on ebay. I don't know your ebay username so you can buy from me without the thought of it being seeded just because you have a CZcams channel. I have a CZcams channel as well but its not about coins lol.

    Man. I wanted to get started doing coin roll hunting, but my credit union can't order coins & TD bank won't give me coins. I might have to see what Key Banks policy about non members and see if I can get some roll. I see $25 boxes of pennies on Ebay for $55+ and can't justify spending that much.
    Once I get my box supply coming in, then I will get more streaming supplies & starting doing live coin roll hunts. Keep up the content.

    "No unfair play" ?? - Rob, I love what you do for the coin collecting community, but wish you would stop promoting these ebay scammers. These sort of sellers hurt the young collector who does not know better. You got essentially $3-$4 of common low grade coins for $12.50 + $4.50 shipping, and the Indian cents on the end show there WAS UNFAIR PLAY - this did not happen by accident. These sorts of sellers prey on those in our community who are least knowledgeable and have the least experience and I think we should be telling our newer collectors steer clear and to spend that $12.50 + $4.50 buying raw high grade examples of the cents they need...or basically anything other than this sudo-gambling that is stacked against them where they are burning 2/3 their money.

    • @RobFindsTreasure
      @RobFindsTreasure  Před 3 lety +6

      Larry - I have done a few eBay rolls videos in almost three years and usually due to many requests to do them - I’m unclear how I am “promoting” these types of purchases as I merely showed the price, showed the rolls contents and gave their site info for those interested in rolls like this. The “unfair” play phrasing was meant in the fact that his roll wasn’t stacked for the video - as everyone could see. I basically got what was expected. That being said, I appreciate your comment regarding online scammers and agree with it. This is why I rarely indulge in such purchases.

      Larry,
      Rob doesn't need me to defend his choice to do this video, however he was very dubious before opening the roll pennies. Also, he said he has collected a 1931 S with a similar purchase. Stay calm, I've loved to watch Rob open these type of rolls so I don't have to. Money still in my pocket.
      Thanks Rob!

    • @LarryStendebach
      @LarryStendebach Před 3 lety +2

      @@kenfiddes6024 I think that thinking does a disservice to Rob's channel. He has become very influential especially with the younger collectors who are just getting started and while this sort of content makes good videos for CZcams I just want to make sure that young collectors don't get scammed on these and quit the hobby. This is something I have seen for years now as a moderator of Reddit. These fly-by-night eBay sellers sell inexperienced collectors three to $4 worth of goods for $12-$16. This is more akin to gambling against the house than it is collecting.

      It is a gamble when buying online. Definitely deception is involved with sale leaders. But, they say 98% of buyers are clueless with any product they buy. There is a lot of psyche science that goes into sales. You have to remember your goal is the separate your customer from his money which he covenants the most.

    Last "wheat cent" roll I bought was from a local antique shop. I paid $4 just for the heck of it, and it had 2 modern Canadian cents... One from '98 and the other '07.
    Now I keep all the Canadian coins I find, but I thought it was pretty disappointing find 2 modern ones in a roll labeled "wheat pennies". I probably wouldn't have minded if they were old, like a King George, but that wasn't the case.

    Back in 1978 I bought my first house which was an old house built back in the very early 1900s. I started doing some remodeling and when I gutted the living room I found a small tin bank in the west wall. I shook it and it had a coin in it. When I opened it I found a nice 1905 Indian cent in VF condition. My Uncle told me back then when you were building a house in those days it was good luck to put a penny in the west wall.

    I went to my first coin shop this month and he had a small box of about a rolls worth of wheat cents in there. He did tell me that he obviously went through and pullout anything of significant value, but offered the whole box for just a couple bucks and I was pretty happy with that, I had a bunch of new additions to my albums including one of the two steels in there and a lot of upgrades as well. I don't know what the average price is for a roll like this, but when I see $12+ for a roll that has been to any degree seeded ( and you can't guarantee any number of anything in a roll unless you are doing something) I just cringe, and my album isn't even anywhere near complete enough to just be looking for upgrades. I'm still leaning hard on getting to know your local dealers rather than taking a risk on ebay, but that's just me. Great video all the same!

It's sorta of what is known as leader, to get you to buy more, in the hope to a get better roll the next time. But typically to get the better dates you have buy them in flips or hunt them.

      I get mine from trustmark I know my tellers well so they don't mind to get me boxes. You may not be able to get any right now because of the coin shortage.

    Great wheat cent rolls they didn't have too bad coins in them but as you said a semi key date or a key date would have been nice great video

    Nice mix of dates. I would be happy with this purchase if it were my money. You mentioned varieties on the steel cents. Have you done any videos on them, or is there a good resource for them (variety vista etc.)? I have some original mint state steel cents I would like to cherry pick. 😁

    I remember a candy that was basically packaged in old style BB tubes .... cardboard tubes and caps, and inside each cap was either a wheat penny, buffalo nickel, or mercury dime. So, of course, at 35 cents apiece it was REAL easy to just remove the cap, see what coin was in the cap ... and just buy the buffalo and mercury ones. And then some idiot decided to poison some pills randomly ... so much for being able to search candy with coins for the good stuff. But the candy was pretty good!

      Don't think for a second that hes not reading this. A salesman's goal is to make your money his money. There's a great deal of psychology that goes into sales. To prove my point I did a experiment and sold tools to mechanics all crossed town for one years and bought a brand new Corvette with the profit. If you have a product that someone wants; note didn't say needs; they will buy it with a good sales pitch. PT Barnum said there's a sucker born every minute.

    It was a heck of alot better than the last two "unsearched" rolls I just purchased!!!
    Every single one was in the 40's on both rolls!! How unlikely was that. Every year and all but 1 mint mark... oh yeah minus the steel cents of coarse!!

    My take on "unsearched" rolls is that it's a crock. Also, I think a lot of these sellers know a number of people follow Rob and are using him to advertise their Ebay / Amazon seller sites.

  • @RustBatman

    Rob, I've had GREAT luck with the seller 'afterworkhobbies' He gives extra rolls every 4 rolls you get, I believe. I've bought from him 2 separate occasions and have had great results both times. A total of 16 steel cents(1 or 2 in MS condition) and a bunch of early San Francisco mints.
