I have owned the Wahoo Bolt V1, Garmin 800, 830, Wahoo Roam, and now Wahoo Bolt V2. They all have their quirks. But I think it comes down to a few things (at least for me)... One is being able to see the device in use. All the features in the world don't matter if you cannot see them in practice. Why Garmin uses a full glossy screen for an outdoors device is beyond me. Wahoo is way easier to see with the matte finish. The second is using the app or cpu and the profiles. Garmin is a little bit better in this area being able segment out bikes (Road vs MTB) however Wahoo can accomplish similar with simply allowing you to add a page. Also I dont really like doing all my data and ride analysis on my phone, which is what wahoo's app does. I like that Garmin connect is a computer program I can use to look at routes, rides, and see a birds eye view of my month, rather than a scrolling feed like Wahoo. If Garmin would just get their act together with a screen that is visible I think I would still be using it. But I still have a Wahoo because I can read the darn thing in all conditions.

I do multiple sports and I find that the Garmin system is really helpful. It puts together all of my activities data from my Edge 530 and Forerunner 745.
I use a Hammerhead Karoo 2. Excellent update policy and Android apps can be sideloaded.
After 5 years as a Garmin user, I got fed up by the companion app and switched to Wahoo Roam.
Easy to use, good companion app and easier to see the screen in bright light.
The downsides as I see them is the buttons which can be a bit hard to press at times, afaik there's no way to set up profiles for different ride types, they rely too much on wifi for syncing workout plans etc.
Among the positives, the navigation seems a bit better, or that was what I experienced while on a group ride and some of the Garmin users were shown a left turn when we were going right.

Garmin are great. A lot of features and Solar but soooo buggy Software (using garmin since 2004 and it has always bin like that). So i switched to wahoo. Works soo much more raliabel
for me is wahoo more buggy so i switched to garmin no lag and bug at all
I have a Garmin 830 and used my son's 520 for a while before that. The 830 touchscreen is fantastic and intuitive. I never got used to the 520 buttons. On the rare occasions that I got rained on, the touchscreen worked just fine. It also works fine with either of my 2 pairs of gloves, Pearl Izumi or Bontrager. I would hate going back to buttons.
But as others have said, Garmin has buggy software. My current problem is the Livetrack occasionally quitting early in a ride. I've told Garmin about and they say they are working on it, but it's been a while and I'm not holding my breath.
I've also found Garmin's routing to be terrible, sending me on roads in would never use on a bike.
I love my garmin 130. I'm not a huge fan of the larger touch screens, so I really like the small + light size. It has data for everything I care about and integrates very well. Highly recommend for anyone that is ok with less then stellar maps/directions (which isn't an important feature for me).
Totally agree, even though it all depends on how you use the computer. I bought my Garmin Edge 500 more than 11 years ago and it still does the job today.
Just before the Garmin 1040 and 1040 Solar came out you could find the 1030+ and pretty large discounts. It's functionality and price made it the cycling computer of choice for me!!
Love my Wahoo Roam. The display is very easy to read on sunny days.
Garmin wins in my books for most corrupted maps!
Go on vacation and then your 530 stops working! Support tells you to use a PC to reload maps but you are on vacation without a PC !

Got the Garmin 520 plus, and it is so good for my demands. With buttons on the side you don't have to worry about a touch screen that is finicky when wet

Having had 2 Garmin units (810 and 1000) and a Wahoo Element Bolt, I’d never go back to Garmin but I’d get a Roam for my ailing eyesight.
Wahoo...although I think it is time for Wahoo Fitness to release an updated ROAM with more color, an improved display, and perhaps a solar charging option similar to the Garmin Edge 1040. The ROAM is become dated.
I have both. I prefer the Wahoo for functionality and a clearer screen, but having had two of them go dead with battery issues after the warranty period, I switched back to Garmin. They are both good, but the Garmin still lasts all day on a single charge and both the Wahoo's barely work long enough for 100km ride.
Warranty period? I had a small screen defect after 40 months. Wahoo asked for a few photos, original receipt and in return for my old one sent me a new Roam.
I've pretty much been in the Garmin ecosystem from the beginning, and I do have to say they have incredible support. So I stick with Garmin. My cycling computer is a original Edge 1030.
The choice is really simple: not the Garmin. Not any Garmin ever again. For years, as I've found out, they've lacked one basic feature in spite of people complaining about it: synchronising with your phone while recording. What this means is that if you suddenly need to choose another destination mid-ride, you need to stop recording, sync with your phone to upload the new route, then start a new ride, thus having to hurrily first hide your strava rides as soon as they're uploaded, download them, merge, then delete the old ones and upload the single merged ride.
And at least on the 530 the map browsing is utter trash and it can take ages to find a specific point on the map as you can't input any text.
After bringing my list of issues up with the other manufacturers (Wahoo and Hammerhead) I've decided my next device will most certainly not be a Garmin.
For pete's sake, even my ancient Suunto 5 watch allows syncing while recording so that I can pick a new route to follow.
this, exactly this my friend.. i‘m on a 520 still and it works so i won‘t buy a new unit soon but this is what would let me buy wahoo as my next cycling computer
Just got myself an 1040, because that works now. Push the new course from the phone and it’s there!
You can always stop navigating and select a new destination one 1 ride activity
Note you can get the Elemnt Roam for £220 now on most websites so quite a bit cheaper than the £300 quoted in this video
Have been very happy with my Element Roam. Survived, undamaged, a big MTB crash on a 3ft rock (my knee, hand and shoulder did not). Broke the adapter part inside the clamp, but that was easy enough to replace. No experience with Garmin.
I wanted the simplicity of the Wahoo, and own the original Elemnt, Bolt 1, and Roam. However, recently all of these units have suffered from unpredictably shutting down, taking several minutes to recover. Really bad news if you are following a route! Since this recent issue affects my older Wahoos as much as the new Roam, I suspect that a software update is at fault. Wahoo Support unable to resolve. Factory reset tried, but does not cure the problem.
My last bike had a Garmin. In some cases it was consistently buggy which really has me looking to try something else.
Garmin 840 over Wahoo Roam v2. And wahoo Roam v2 over Garmin 530 or 540.
I have a Garmin Edge 530, Garmin Fenix, Garmin scale, use the Garmin connect software for weight monitoring and uploading custom routes easily, and aside from issues with dropouts connecting to my wahoo smart trainer I haven't really had any issues with any devices. There's something to be said for having an ecosystem that works. For example, if I weigh myself and I lose weight, those stats go across automatically to the watch and Edge and adjust my W/kg and FTP. It's a nice feature.
The latest firmware for the Edge was pretty buggy, I almost rolled it back. Garmin could definitely do better on that front. Pretty sure my next purchase will be a 1030 or 1040.
Which Fenix were you using, and do you know if they are all compatible with the cycling computers? Lately I've just been using my Fenix 6X Sapphire to track my heart rate, route, time, distance, and sleep stats, but from what I've read the Garmin computers only integrate with the Fenix 6 Pro, which seems absurd.
If the Wahoo can link to my Fenix and future power meters but the Garmin can't, ny choice would be the Wahoo.
@SlickWillyTFCF fenix 5. Since my post I upgraded to a 1040 Edge and the experience across devices has been flawless. I also strongly recommend the WindField app for your Edge, it's the best Connect IQ app I've used so far.

I wonder, why is every single review silent about battery replacement on this things? As far as i know, you can not replace the battery on any of this expensive devices. This is an important peace of information and should be mentioned.

In 2024 I still use Garmin as small niche App builders only build for Garmin. If some of these App developers had the capacity to develop for Wahoo and Karoo then I would have a true choice. I am not unhappy with Garmin. Just that I can only consider Garmin due to such limitations.
Love my 530. You can't beat a good button or 2.
This is a good surface level review that rattles off readily available information that can be found online with an apples to apples approach. However, I'd love to see a more experience-driven review where BikeRadar staff members actually test equipment (who would've imagined) and give candid feedback. A little disappointing coming from a 720k+ sub channel. Smaller niche channels have been massively more helpful and I'd love to see future reviews take inspiration.

Had a Garmin 1000 but it was glitchy so updated to a 1030 which also sucks. Seriously thinking about a switch to Wahoo. The colours look better on the Wahoo screen, I’m sure she just said the colour is better on the Garmin!?! Maybe she means the 1040. The one thing I do like about my 1030 is the battery life though…
Had garmin bugs always did my head in now have wahoo and a hammerhead, like the hammerhead better than garmin but still like wahoo best!
I started in with the Garmin with a Edge 700 series, currently using a Garmin 800. Would love something like a 1040 Solar. I also use a Fenix watch, so I am pretty much in the Garmin eco system. But I Quite like the Wahoo especially the newest models with the updated mapping. Because of my experience and use of multiple Garmin products, I would go another Garmin. If I was coming in Fresh to the bike computer scene I probably would go Wahoo.

Had the wahoo, was so easy to use loved it until I realised it was no good in the forest where I do most of my rides, so purchased the garmin 530, also great but wahoo was far less complicated. Would return to wahoo if the gps was better.

I have the edge explore 2 and whilst I find it fairly easy to use the battery refuses to charge beyond 88% and loses charge even when fully powered down.
Garmin does everything but with a quirky interface. Wahoo does most with a simpler experience

By navigation my Wahoo Roam is 10-20 meters behind. When I have to turn, the Wahoo tells I should turn in 10-20 meters. Annoying.
My cheap BLT sensor cannot connect to the Wahoo Roam. But connect fine to the Wahoo Fitness app. Also annoying.
very good video, however, i just wonder, i think you are holding a garmin explore 2 device on your hand, and i was hoping to see it featured, but you didnt talk about it. that would be another touch screen option besides the 1040?

I've heard from one of my customers that the ELEMNT Bolt V2 incorrectly tracks elevation data when following a route from a GPX file, which a Garmin doesn't do, though it doesn't pose the same problem when recording a ride in real-time. Both of us ride in Malaysia, where the climate is tropical.
To those with both brands, how true is this? I'm looking to get my first GPS-powered bike computer (in 10+ years of cycling), so I need to get it right.
i get that software costs money, but i cant get over paying premium money for 10 year old hardware
Missing in the review is how each one fairs on reparability... or if they are repairable at all. Bryton has some screws to hold the back cover and replacing the battery is straightforward.
I've got the Bolt v2 very basic and I've found it abit buggy very slow to start up pages slow as well I'm for ever pushing buttons twice. I've just got the edge 830 had it 1month so far I prefer it any day the app has way more informative too .
Ive had a garmin watch for a few years. recently got a whaoo computer, and was upset that i couldn't create custom workouts.
Just update to Garmin 830 from the 520. Absolutely love it. Battery lasts forever, fast GPS, good screen. I have had not luck with Wahoo products like HR monitors and a Core smart trainer. I stay away from Wahoo stuff. Like DC says...Garmin just works.
Hammerhead Karoo should have been included in this. Much better than both Wahoo & Garmin
I love the way this video shows the old ELEMNT Bolt in various shots then the new one. Then flicks to the roam saying it has a better mount but then is mounted on the wrong wahoo mount. Geez!!
Garmin difficult to get back on track if you stray off course. Only seems to go back to start.!!

These reviewers “always sit on the fence”. Just pick one. There’s a lot more to reviews also, like how much exact battery life do you get vs manufacturers claim, how fast do the apps open, how responsive is the screen, how does it work with the rear radar systems, screen in bright daylight, which one feels premium, available third party accessories, warranties, charging time, etc! Jeez.
These reviews are worthless than otherwise letting me know what’s for sale.
I for one have the garmin 530, which I can tell you, the navigation on the fly suck, the menus are slow and cumbersome, customizing profiles is also cumbersome, it takes a long time to charge even with modern chargers. The whole thing feels like something designed to work on a blackberry operating system. My friend has the Karoo 2 and it feels way more modern, and has me tempted to update, but the amount of in depth reviews is maddening.

Wahoo is terrible for course file control. On PC, on app, from Strava. If you delete on App, still remain on Bolt. Also PC.
Some will be deleted, some cannot.
Garmin - never ever again. Every year repair for barometer, if rains - it is KO. Only problems.

Garmin only connects with other Garmin products. If you have a Wahoo Roam with a HRM or cadence sensor from another manufacturer they will connect through Ant+ or Bluetooth.

Note: Beware of buying a Garmin 530 because it is a pile of junk, it restarts itself automatically. I contacted the Garmin support team, and they didn't find any solution for me.
You didn't even mention Connectiq apps, which is a whole realm of functionality unmatched by wahoo. It offers a wide array of interfaces and special integrations that have a ton of value.
I don't use or even own a "smartphone", that's one less problem elminated from the equation. I choose to roll with a Garmiin Edge 530.

I use my iPhone 12 that I got from work. I can’t afford a 350 euro bike computer almost half the price of my bike…. Crazy for old tech with a shitty touch screen and slow GPS
