Only Chris Hill could get away with playing the Ovaltine tune and getting everyone in the room to dance to it! Loved the early 80's going to Zero 6, The Goldmine, Ilford Palais and Caister. Long live the Essex soul boys.

Well the me de uh finally caught up , but by 1980 the tribes were probably in decline, but the music lives on. I attended a few Purley / Reading All Dayers and Jazz funk clubs and religiously listened to Robbie and Greg's shows and the Pirates. Chris Hill had his heart in the right place but there was no greater crime than a DJ singing over a record for me, and as for the Ovaltinies... nuff' said. !! Bless the Funk and Keep the Faith.

I am from Tottenham, two late school friends appeared in the crowed in this documentary and another three were faces in the crowd. When I was sent to the grocers for lets say onions, carrots and potatoes; like a pied piper the sound of drums, saxophone and trumpets would attract me to Sheraton Records where Light of the World and gang would rehearse.
We threw stones at David Grant for strutting his greasy wet-look stuff down our street when he visited Joe Williams and later we bought his records, and ended up at Caister.

A time when the 'DJ' knew the music, knew the audience, and knew how to use a microphone..... Also very little in the way of electronics to aid mixing the tracks.... All mixed by ear...
Living up North, these big roadshows only appeared infrequently, but I did see Dave Lee Travis, (Radio One) a number of times, using Froggy's outfit.
Froggy himself played locally a couple of times with that ASS rig, and Rosko appeared several times, sporting his 'Orange' rig, alleged to be around 10kW in power. Whatever it was, it was most impressive, but not as loud as Froggy!
There are pictures knocking about of a 25kW system, Rosko used in Wembley stadium, in the mid 70s,but this was a mish-mash of his own Orange show, and dozens of other PA cabinets filling the stage.
Great days which spurred on many a local DJ - including me, to suddenly become a 'Roadshow', instead of simply being a mobile disco.
I was lucky, and ran my operation for 37 years, finally selling the company in 2008.
These were great days for disco and music... You cannot compare it to today, where its all about computers & electronics. Very few DJs have any charisma, and most don't even use a microphone.... Sad really!
