      I have been using DDG for several years now and love it. I have never felt that I wasn't getting good results and sometimes better than Google because no targeted ads. I not only was worried about privacy but also got tired of Google's manipulated search results and having to wade through a page or more of sponsors before finding what I was really looking for. For me it's Duck Duck Go all the way.

      I hate google but find for the most part it is better. I have not had much success with ddg. Google seems to attack me though their ads as if I was in a forum. That being said google is not working good for me. Gives me phone numbers for other states. About 4 years ago or so google was literally reading my mind. Now it almost seems to hide info from me. It does not work well. Just ads.

      @SteveGillham Před 3 lety +22

      So, the problem with what you are saying is that it is way too easy to now see false information being pushed to you, and your other statement "opinion" plays straight into this.
      With this, people with an Agenda can now push their "opinion" on you and present it as facts.
      There are facts based on scientific and medical experts advice, yet there are also "opinion" by non-experts in the subject matter.
      You may want to read the "opinion" of others, but that certainly does not mean that the information is facts.
      For example, some people "opinion" believe the world is flat, yet we know from scientific data that the world is not flat.

    • @cricho15
      @cricho15 Před 3 lety +20

      @@SteveGillham I can understand your statements well. They just don't relate to my statements. I did not speak of "false" information, but of one-sided facts.
      Apart from the fact that I fall into your expert category and can therefore assess very well what I get to read there, the last two decades in particular should have clearly shown that science does not know any "democratic" approach.
      Facts must not only be postulated, but they must be comprehensible.
      If someone claims that the earth is flat, then he must provide evidence for this. Especially if the prevailing opinion says otherwise.
      Google, however, only brings me this majority opinion. It is hardly possible for me to check facts outside this normative discussion.
      On DuckDuckGo, I find all the answers and thus have the chance to make up my own mind without having been locked into the only "true" opinion by the "truth police" beforehand.
      People who don't trust the majority to recognise the real facts are much more suspicious to me than confused people who believe in a flat earth despite all the evidence. The people with the "only truth" are not fact-based scientists, but fanatical ideologues. Scientists question the status quo when there are good arguments. And that only works if you can find all the facts and opinions. Even if you think you know the truth. That is arrogant and the reason why there is hardly any progress in science.

    • @SteveGillham
      @SteveGillham Před 3 lety +12

      @@cricho15 you maybe able to tell the difference, however there are many people who have been told that Google has a political bias, so when DDG starts showing them website which are pushing "opinion" dressed up as fact, you can see the mess society is in.
      Certainly, I would not recommend just using any 1 search engine, however certain types of people will just accept whatever they are fed as truth.
      I have seen many completely false narrative being pushed on DDG and then comparing to 10 other search engines, you can see how DDG is being abused by 3rd parties to push their agenda.

    • @SteveGillham
      @SteveGillham Před 3 lety +14

      Science does not have a democratic approach, it's based on actual observed data.
      Take for example of covid, the data shows that wearing a mask, social distancing and get vaccinated reducing the risk of spreading the virus.
      This is no opinion, it's based on the facts.
      However opinions on how to handle a virus tells a completely different side. This is fine to have a different opinion, however if people start to believe this opinion it has real world affects and risks people lives.
      So it's OK to have different views to yourself, but for the good of everyone it's better to follow the facts and not opinions.

    For iOS users DuckDuckGo automatically defaults to Apple Maps and other system preferred services, (which is very good these days, at least in my area and critical to me), and never tries to trick you into using Chrome even when you don’t have it installed, unlike Google, which tries TWICE to get the user to pick Chrome over Safari or your current browser. The search results have been fine. I would t have switched years ago if the search results weren’t as usable as Google’s. They’re not the same, but they’re as usable for most people.

    I, too, have compared search differences between the DDG and G. So I use either depending on what I'm searching for. Sometimes DDG just doesn't come up with an expected result, even if I already know that it exists. Often, it's because of how the search term is worded.
    You just can't assume because DDG didn't find it, that it's not there. Google is completely reliable mostly because your search term is better interpreted and applied.
    Or results show up in DDG in an order that you completely didn't anticipate so the one that best suits you is presented buried deeply in the pages of results.
    To me, it's like comparing types of wrenches. I would never throw away socket wrenches because I think box-end wrenches are always better. And always consider that I might have to use a pipe wrench to get the same result.

    Privacy is good and all, but the levels that people complain about and what Duck Duck Go and similar services advertise is something that should really interest a tiny minority. Typically speaking it does not concern most people and if it does, it's more likely a fad and not due to a legitimate reason why you would want to protect said privacy. It's basically no different from switching from going to the store to using a burner phone to have somone buy your gorceries and drop them off at some remote drop off point where you pick them up later. Sure, it's more private as they say, but the benefits you get from it are certainly not something you would need or that would benefit you.
    I tried to use DDG and a few other privacy centric services, but typically the privacy gain was always rather irrelevant and the downsides were notable with the experience in using them worse. It also might be because due to my education being focused around crytical thinking and analasys that I do not fall into echo chambers, so my perception of that downside might be a little skewed.

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  Před 3 lety +1

      I definitely agree that there are levels of privacy. However, I would disagree with you that it should only be a tiny minority that care about privacy. There is such thing as "too far", but I think that the average person is so far away from that line that any movement toward more privacy is a good move.

    I have been using duckduckgo as my primary search engine now for about 5 years. I use duckduckgo probably about 90-95% of the time. It simply works most of the time. Sometimes when I am doing research for a blog article, I will rather use Google if I am having problems looking for what ever it is I am looking for. But I will also use other search engines in these types of cases. I do not like the way google is manipulating search results. It can make it very difficult for someone with a small site to get seen in the google search results. I have also noticed that google is censoring sites they are not politically aligned with.
