Honestly, since I started Duolingo, may Hangul and Japanese have improved a lot but I use other apps and ebooks, listening to podcast while working and youtube to understand better of the grammar. Although, it quite slower pace because I also a bit lazy and busy still, I see the progress whenever I watched variety shows and lives and able to understand even 15% of the convo 😊 also, imitating people and animes how they speak helped me a lot ❤😊

So far it is one called Immersive Chinese, that takes you progressively learning 5 hanzi a lesson. You get 25 sentences in pinyin, hanzi and English and you can play a realistic voice speaking it. I personally turn off the pinyin and read the hanzi aloud first before playing back the native speaker and listening to that.
Then next app I liked for helping to memorise hanzi was one called reword an automatic spaced repetition app but it doesn't have the updated hsk vocabulary yet. Then there is one called HSK by Chinese Simple. It has a variety of memory games etc to help memorize the hanizi. Including listening and reading stories.
Lastly an app for every thing else I liked was called Hello China.

So what I heard was :
Consistency in small chunks daily of about 30min-1hour early in the morning is important.
At an early stage just learn the essential grammar and words with an app or online guide of most frequent words with example context and sentences (I’d say if on your own, chunk words together based on concepts and put them in sentences with the grammar you are learning.)
Once you’ve learned a bit, start watching youtube, streaming services, tv, movie, books, anime, whichever that has your language, preferably something with audio and text of both languages.
    And then repeat multiple times.
Personally I’d add to not think about time, instead just finish a lesson or a 5-10 minute video and then add more stuff from there based on your schedule.
And excessive note taking is a lot, but it may help to take notes as if you were making shopping lists or journaling, something that would put it in use rather than constant exercises and word lists. This can also help find what words you’d actually be using often as you keep needing to find and use the same words and phrases.

For me only a small part of why I take notes (in any subject, not only but including languages) is bc I may revisit them in the future. It's mostly bc the act of writing, plus saying the words aloud as i write, multiple times since speaking is quicker than writing, improves my pronunciation and helps it stick in my brain better.
I often am able to remember words or concepts bc i visualized (without necessarily trying) where and how I wrote it the first or some other specific time.

definitely somethings wont ever make sense in primary level, and you dont really have to understand the meaning behind more over than trying to get acquainted with it and use it properly then it just flows. That was with english for me. English definitely stripped some of the layers my language had at the beginning, but getting adjusted to that, eliminates too much overthinking that will never really bring us anywhere anyway. just go with the flow

I've been lazy learning Korean for about 2 years now. Yeah, I did actually study some grammar, I was taking notes, I was actually learning throughout A1 and A2 levels, but at his point I only have tutoring once a week, no more "active" learning (unless I want to). On a daily basis I watch Korean videos (mostly kpop variety shows because these are so fun), and I find myself understanding 50 to 60% of what's being said, and that's completely enough. I find myself understanding more and more each day. I went from seeing hangeul and mentally thinking "ugh, I don't wanna read that, it gives me headache" to actually reading it before even having the time to process the thought that I don't wanna read it, because I already read it. My writing and reading speed is probably at the level of elementary school 3rd grader but that's sufficient

I also noticed that memorizing and studying vocab and grammar never worked for me. I used to spend all day trying to memorize words and grammar points but nothing seemed to work. Until I was so fed up that I switched to just listening. The progress was slow but it was worth it. 95% of what I know (in English) now I picked it up by listening.
I just recently started learning Chinese, like 5 days ago, and am trying to first focus on pronunciation and other stuff(yk, the basics) then when I'm comfortable I'll yet again be switching to listening. Hope this works!

Your brain picks up on patterns when you listen to the language a lot. I found I could understand little bits of conversation in Korean also. I think sometimes we forget how important listening is for language learning. So, when people respond to us, we can understand them.

I listen a lot when I'm walking to places or sitting on the subway. I'm trying to cram in as many hours of listening that I can in a day. I understand a lot more each time I listen to the same material, more than I thought at the start. I reckon if my listening is fluent, I will also start speaking fluently too. To confess I do word-mining at times, to increase my vocab, but even though I save the word in the dictionary, I never review. Even though I have to look up the same word many times, I do end up learning a lot of vocabulary using this method. I alternate with periods of free listening too, where I don't look up anything.

I'm learning chinese and duolingo is also helping me a lot with word and character memorization, I think it's the best way for me to remember characters because since I already know some words I avoid using pinyin there to force myself to remember.

Consistency is key. My first language is Spanish, and even when you don’t use it consistently (I teach English in Japan 😅), you forget it. (Good luck!! 😊) I’m learning Japanese the traditional way currently, I listen to Chinese and Korean.
Maybe it depends on the person, but I have to write things down unfortunately 😭. Learning is localized to specific brain areas, so when you use more ways to learn (reading, listening, writing, etc), you remember in different parts of the brain. The likelihood of recall is higher. My Chinese and Korean suck 😂 since I only listen to it. I also have ADHD so it’s much harder for me to learn any subject. I wish I could learn as easily as you! Keep up the good work. 😊

Hi, I'm Indonesian. Thanks for the nice video. It's really helpful.
Now I'm trying to learn 2 languages, English and Arabic. And before I watch this video, I've been doing some methods that you said, like watching many videos on the CZcams everyday.
And by the way, thank you for trying to learn our language. Hope that you can be fluent in Indonesian as soon as possible. Keep it up, bro. 🙌🏻🤍

But usually, people can’t master the target language just by watching, especially if they’re not children anymore.
However, I appreciate that you made this video because now I know how polyglots learn languages and now I am more convinced that polyglots have special talent.

Bro, your english is insane. That alone justifies your merit.
Im similar to you in the sense that i just do whatever i want in the language and reduce stress as much as possible. It's slow but there's a far more significant chance that i will stick to it, and in the end that is the main thing.

what school teaches us is, we sit down, and absorb whatever the professor is intrsucting haha, it's easy when you dont have to think about anything just follow the path laid before you
when you start learning a language solo, you dont even know where to truly begin.
For me it was always the basics, numbers, some key words i can remember like when how i started with english and just start calling them out in that language.
I found if you know something you should read it out loud and practice it, everyday you can repeat it and after few days or weeks you will be able to pronounce like a pro, cannot brute force that.
There was another experience in highschool where i felt like my english never truly progressed, because she - the "professor" didnt know how to teach effectivly just had a useless degree that enabled here to do that. That aside - if you do not actively engage in conversations you can dull like a knife that's not being sharpend after every use
if you do not learn new things continously it get's boring, espeically if you have mastered previous things and you forget about active practicing.
And the biggest lack of discipline is when you start to forget your own words in your mother language and starting to replace them with foreign one, then you speak two incomplete languages with some minor language barriers (you still understand everything perfectly well, but cannot recall instances of certain words anymore because your brain prefers the new one or understands it on a much deeper level and so your instant recall of words is stored in some kind of easy and fast to access memory cache where brain doesnt have to manually search for words but gives you the easiest option that might not be so beneficial at the end, i guess that happens if you use one language more than the other or think in one language and talk to yourself in more than the other.) For me, it'd be english more than my own mother language, so it becomes hard to articulate myself well enough in presence of someone who doesnt know english at all.

Hi, I am learning Korean for a few months and try to use videos as input. One question is what kind of subtitle should I use? My feeling is that using L1 (mother language) subtitle helps comprehension but it doesn't provide a sound-to-word mapping. Using L2 (target language) subtitle provides the opposite pro-and-con. And when using L2 subtitle, it is harder to find suitable material just above my level. Could you share some experiences here, thank you!

I was taking notes with every lesson of Russian and Korean and I didn’t realize how much it was slowing down my progress until I decided to take a break to study Portuguese six months ago. I take no notes in Portuguese and I was forced to make a lot of mistakes that actually helped me because I had to repeatedly do these lessons or questions before I finally acquired the word. I am now reading teen books in Portuguese. The way I have studied Portuguese has changed how I will study Russian and Korean moving forward, starting with reading more even if I don’t understand half of what I read. I went from highlighting 12 to 15 words a page down too about 3. The book reading ending up being like another flashcard system as many words are repeated over and over. And of course I am having fun as I understand and enjoy the story. I know this is not for everyone but it works for me. I’m almost done with Portuguese Duolingo path so I will return to studying Russian and Korean full time.
    Thanks for this video!

This is useful, thank you for making this video. I am studying English, Chinese and German at the same time. But my English level somewhat higher than the others. I use English to study Chinese and German and Chinese is the priority now, every morning for at least 1 to 2 hours then before bed I will study German 15-20 minutes. I have been doing this for 1 week and something amazing happened in my job Interview in English , the interviewer asked do you know Chinese and I replied 1 sentence in Chinese. I don't need to pause and think. Consistency is the key and never judging yourself day by day but to the first time you just started.

I am learning Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, and Korean with Duolingo. Korean is such a fun language. I am a beginner in all three. In my opinion, Korean is the most difficult out of the three. Despite its short alphabet (relatively short compared to Chinese and Japanese), its phonetics is more difficult to pronounce. You almost describe it as the shortage of characters to assign to phonetics. For example, the same character (consonants) for paired consonants can be read as [t], [d], and something in between [d/t]- a soft [d] they call it. Their pronunciation depends on where it is within the word: in the beginning, middle, or end, and where it is within the "batchim". Besides, some vowels are so close to each other in pronunciation that in quick speech they sound almost the same, but their graphic character is different. And of course, some sounds are very alien or unusual, like [l/r], which also in some situations is closer to [L] or [R], but sometimes it is something in between the two. I used some other resources for Korean and Mandarin Chinese available on Coursera. For Korean it gives good tips on pronunciation. And then we have some special reading rules and fun grammar on top. With Japanese, it is the opposite problem. I find it unbelievable that they use 3 types of Alphabet, and some words can be transcribed using each of the three alphabets. And in the same sentence, they can mix them. So it is fun as well. I am following you on Duolingo.

Dude thank you for this video
I think you are right about most of your tips
I guess we are similar learners
I learned English the Lazy way, it took my years, but nowadays I have a decent English, without putting much effort, I was just having fun all the time
During the pandemics I learned Italian, I was a little more active (took a course, took notes), but because I also consumed a lot of content and Italian is really close to my native language (Portuguese), I got it fast
Now I am trying to learn your Language, Korean, and also Russian
It's really tough, and I think I am not consuming enough content
Like, sometimes I put a video or podcast in any of the languages, but I get only a word here and there
I definitely want to learn Chinese and German as well in the future
But when the language is far from your native language is harder
