wow this brings back some memories, about 50 years ago i was with my father and he needed something from radio shack, while we were there he bought me a tandy leather kit, i had a lot of fun making all the projects in it. one was a belt i made for my dad and he wore it for over 20 years..... i wonder if he still has it......im gonna call him
Townsends have the most practical videos we could ever watch, especially in these times. Prepping is always useful, but knowing how to make what we need from nature around will be the truly vital skill for survival.
Yes, please do more leather videos! My mother used to be an exceedingly talented leather worker, she made the most beautiful children's stool with carvings of horses in it and it was triangle. This has inspired me to try this myself, I'm so looking forward to more leather videos!
The good thing about leather working is it’s not changed much in hundreds of years. I’ve worked with leather for 40 years and I say you do good work. Looks great.
Loved this!! My father is 86 yrs young and although woodworking has always been his preference, he seems to be avoiding sharp tools. I never thought of leather work. This is a wonderful idea for him to make boxes for his grandchildren for Christmas. Thank you so much!!
The leather scraps are still good for making similar projects but any sewing and I would suggest investing into a stitching pony if it's something you want to get into. Oh! One more thing. I would suggest looking around garage and yard sales for old leather jackets.
If you're in the US, check out Springfield Leather online. You can buy almost every leather they have by the square foot, even veg tan. And they have various thicknesses/grade of leather so you can save or spend more, depending on your project. Great way to get some bigger pieces without breaking the bank.
Start a leather fund where you set aside the money you'd spend on a bag of scraps and let it build until you've got enough for a roll of veg tan. For instance, I can get a bag of scraps from Hobby Lobby for about $13 or a roll of veg tan for around $60, both depending on whether or not there's a leather sale at the time (about once a month at the store in my area.) I forego buying a bag of scraps for a month and I've got enough for the roll of veg tan and maybe a decent punch depending on what else I cut out through the month. You can do it, don't let yourself be the obstacle!
Using the drill bit to set the spacing of the stitches is a great idea. In the period, they would work with whatever they had, in creative ways. I like these craft videos. Thank you.
I love these videos about leather crafting. Please continue to touch on the tools, techniques, and various types of products that can be made. I especially love pouches, bags, etc. that can be used in bushcraft, reinacting, or survival type situations.
Great video, very informative and not intimidating at all. Would like to see videos about leather hats of the era. Maybe tricorn hats or something. Keep up the good work. 👍🏼
I absolutely love these trade videos. Horn and leather working are fascinating. Be cool to see a video where you combine multiple disciplines. You did that a bit with the bellows construction video.
You might include how to measure to make sure your side piece is actually long enough to begin with. Also you might demonstrate how to make the string clamp. Wonderful stuff. Thank you.
Do make sure to oversize them! (or get measurements for who they're for, and add a few cm in height atleast) nothing worse than a soft case (leather especialy) toutching the lenses and making then dirty ;w;
I would more videos like this! Also information on where to source materials for projects I'd suggest any practical household item. I love your approach to teaching!
I love watching your leather working videos! I love the whole thing, the process, the finished pieces and how clear your descriptions and instructions are.
Love these videos! Honestly, it makes me want to hop in my time machine, go back 20 years, and apologize to my Scout leaders for not paying attention in leatherwork class 😆
Very nice craftsmanship here. If it is possible, can you make moccasins, and other leather apparel, like a buckskin jacket, from the time period? Cheers!
Reminds me of leather work shop at Camp No Be Bis Co , Robert treat council. Thank you , hoping all the Townsends are getting along as well as possible.
We definitely need to talk more Iggy and got a lot to show ya next 1812! I've made almost every part of my entire setup, which would be very historically correct
I love this so much. You could even make a thicker wood form, and then make a thinner one and leave that thinner form in the bottom for some extra strength if carrying something heavy inside. Or line the box with a nice fabric.
I have been going back and watching all day your older vids. love it that your not far from my home in muncie. met some of you in missisnaw 1812 in 2019. hope to see you this coming year. if I can make it
Really enjoying the videos. They've been giving me ideas for some alpaca hides i have. Maybe an idea for an upcoming video would be making a stitch pony.
Great video! That's a really nice project, I have some veg leather that will make a good box. Thanks for the idea I didn't know you could form it like that.
I love this leather series, so many cool project ideas! I wonder what people back in the day used to make with the leather scraps, I’m sure they would have found a way to put those leftovers to good use 🤔
Great video love new to me ideas. Working with leather is so much fun been off and on working with it for 45+- year's only thing I wish I learned was carving . That's the hardest part.
I’m enjoying these additional insights into daily work in Colonial America. Combs, spoons, leather, so what’s next? Bone buttons or using a mold to make metal buttons?
Such a lovely project. It's hard to imagine how everyday's items could be pretty and personalized. How would people of that time go about to color/paint leather engraving?
I'd love to see a wallet video from that time period. Been a leathersmith for almost 10 years now and I love historical leather things but nobody really makes them, other than pouches, except you lol.
Nice one. I'd like to see some smaller jewellery boxes. I'm going to look into making my own little boxes out of leather for the jewellery i make after seeing this.

Beautiful memory
Leather kits and everything one would need to get into leather work can still be bought at craft stores such as Michael's and Joann Fabrics.
How's pops yo ! Long time no c cuhzin roman!
@@Kez_DXX Tandy Leather is still around too.
I love it when Brandon Oswald is on here. Dont get me wrong, I love seeing John too... but gotta love exploring other trades/
Videos like this keep my interest in this channel.
Brandon really coming into his own here, awesome stuff.
I’d love to see a leather “cigar box” made. Not to store cigars in, but just that style. Always use old cigar boxes to store little things in
I'm sure they all had tobacco pouches back then!
@@Reveers not so much a tobacco pouch, but a short, flat top box like a cigar box is what I meant.
Townsends have the most practical videos we could ever watch, especially in these times. Prepping is always useful, but knowing how to make what we need from nature around will be the truly vital skill for survival.
I really love the leather series guys, it's so fun and interesting.
Yes, please do more leather videos! My mother used to be an exceedingly talented leather worker, she made the most beautiful children's stool with carvings of horses in it and it was triangle. This has inspired me to try this myself, I'm so looking forward to more leather videos!
I'd love to see a video about classic leather working tools.
Me too
The good thing about leather working is it’s not changed much in hundreds of years. I’ve worked with leather for 40 years and I say you do good work. Looks great.
Brandon is an amazing craftsman. Love his teaching.
Made my first set of leather stamps by filing the heads of 20 d nails, 65 years ago. Always enjoyed creating decorative 'smalls'...
these leather and horns videos are great. I also loved the smithing stuff yall used to do
Loved this!! My father is 86 yrs young and although woodworking has always been his preference, he seems to be avoiding sharp tools. I never thought of leather work. This is a wonderful idea for him to make boxes for his grandchildren for Christmas. Thank you so much!!
Love these crafty ones with Brandon!
You are quite talented Brandon
I'd like to see more "smaller" leather projects because I can't really afford big rolls of veg tan, only bags of scraps.
Just sew the scraps together, maybe press a scale design into it so it looks like reptile skin.
@@donutchan8114 nice

HECK YES 👍🏼 WE WANT MORE BOXES!!! How want a triangle.
This guy goes great with this channel! I hope he stays a guest for years to come!
Thank you for this video. I wish leather working was taught in schools. It's such a good skill to have.

I just started doing some leather crafting and you sir are a great teacher. Thanks for the videos!

The eyeglass cases look easy. I think I will make those for family members for Christmas. They would make great desk or nightstand holders.
Do make sure to oversize them! (or get measurements for who they're for, and add a few cm in height atleast)

Seeing the soft sole boot tutorial would be pimp
They have a pair of men’s and women’s moccasin on their web page
He made moccasins in a Townsends Plus video
Charming little box :)
Nice to see more of these leathercraft videos, and even nicer to hear there's more on the way :D

I would really like to see more of this type of craft! That's totally awesome!
I love the leather segments. So soothing.

Yes, more leather craft PLEASE!
Beautiful job. It’d be cool to see you forge some leather working tools then make something with them.
You're a true artisan, Brandon!
Love it!
Never knew Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys was a leatherworker!

Good job great video. Never thought much of leather working. Got my interest. Thanks to the whole team.
I'm really digging these Leather and Horn videos. 🙂
I love the box! I would love to see more vegetable tanned leather hand crafts. Also, I am wondering how these would be used in the 18th century?
Scrolling through the other comments, it seems I'm the only person who didn't know what 'veg tan' was. Learned something new today!
Love Leather!
Such a lovely project. It's hard to imagine how everyday's items could be pretty and personalized.
How would people of that time go about to color/paint leather engraving?
Beautiful craftsmanship.
Would love to see you do some bigger stuff too! Longer videos of you working would be cool.
It would be great to see you make a traditional belt using period techinques like this!
This was really fun to watch. I like the craft/trade videos.
Very cool, you're quite an artist, Brandon.
Great tutorial. Definitely would like to see more!
I miss the ole earth oven days great journey my friend🙂

The saddle stitch is the nutmeg of leatherwork
Neat box! I'd really like to see the tanning process.
Amazing stuff, didn't know you could make something so stiff out of leather.
The leather box/container looks nice
Wow. Thank you. Now, I'm inspired.
Love these crafting videos.
Gorgeous. I don't have a request for any particular item. Just want you to keep many ANY thing that catches your fancy.
