Easy to follow and thorough step by step tutorials do it yourself (DIY) to help you with your broken lawn and garden equipment including snowblowers.
I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed wacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many decades and also run my own repair shop so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to share with you. You will also find many tool and product reviews from top brands on my channel as well.

Don, great video. It's so good to see you doing complete fixes. I know it's time consuming to film these types of repairs, but it's so much appreciated. Keep up the good work!
Too bad he is not at least 95% thorough!
Exactly - it’s tough enough just Living ...
Wow, I never knew a seat could break loose! What I love about your channel is your an excellent mechanic and sometimes you pull off little miracles. Definitely one of the best mechanics on youtube! How the hell do you only have 207k subs?
because I don't use clickbait titles and thumbnails
I do appreciate these videos when im trying to figure out a problem and reach a point that im lost i know i can turn to your channel
A joy to watch, almost hypnotic watching a man who is well versed in his trade.
The Brothers got his -- together 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
And Don is a gentleman too.
You could “sweat fit” the valve seat in by heating the head in an oven or bbq grill, and chilling the seat with dry ice or regular ice. It should then just drop in. I would still peen the metal over to lock it in place. Nice video !!
That seems a bit extreme! No problem with cracking the head or breaking the valve seat? I put the valve seat (ring) in the freezer for a few minutes and used a propane torch around the exhaust valve area.
I have owned a Craftsman 18HP intek for 13yrs now , still runs like new.I haven’t had to go inside the motor yet, an watching your videos will really help when the time comes to. I just love how these motors can be fixed & resurrected back to life.
Exceptionally clear video on valve adjustment-- an area most engine repair videos do not even attempt. Not only did you show the problem condition, but exactly how to adjust the valves and lap them properly. As a bonus, I discovered I do not need a valve spring compressor or other sophisticated tools. This video covered a woefully overlooked area in our developing knowledge of small engine mechanics, and without your careful, explicit instruction, many of us would remain in the dark.
I enjoy watching you work! My first repair was a helicoil on a 1950s 2 stroke HD head back in the mid 1960s and my hobby and livelihood is anything to do with tools. I picked up quite a bit watching your techniques. See there you can teach an old dog new tricks, if he will just watch and listen Thank you for time you spend at this.
I've watched Dony do this a couple of times now on different mowers...I don't even own one 😉. Top man and very knowledgeable, he make every video enjoyable ❤️️
He is the Best I’ve Seen 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great video. It may be helpful to some viewers to know that the "silver" push rods are aluminum and typically found in the intake. They don't get as hot. The exhaust push rod is typically steel to deal with higher heat. I use a small rubber hammer and the valve itself to reinstall the seat. I think that gives better distribution of the blow from the hammer. I do like your idea of using a center punch to secure the seat in place. Thanks for taking the time to make this EXCELLENT video.
the trick with the center pin is GENIUS! i have never seen that before - top vid!
Had the same problem on an OHV16 Tecumseh last year. Did same procedure but as you said no guarantee. It lasted almost exactly 1 year and threw the seat again. Had to put in a new head. The owner was aware that it might not last and was ok with it. Nice job with the video and explaining the process
WOW! I am very happy I found this video. I have a 1978 Wheel Horse D200 with a Kohler K532 engine. It's been running great until about one month ago. While removing snow with the snowthrower on the front it suddenly lost power. I was able to park it in the shed. A week later I found zero compression in one cylinder. I feared a possible broken connecting rod, or possibly a broken valve spring. I never considered a valve seat like this. The engine turns over easily so I'm going to investigate the valve issue first. This video is the perfect instruction for this repair......I just pray it's this and not the rod.
Thank you!
Thank you very much for your detailed instruction on how to repair and check your engine. I learn a lot indeed. Thanks again.
Only thing I might do any different is to test it for compression and running b4 complete assembly. You know what your doing and your confidence shows. Thanks for the awesome video!
Don, congratulations with hitting 100k subscribers!
Thank you so much for the longer video on diagnosing, and repairing a Valve Seat. Well done!
Cheers! :-)
I have always adjusted the valves 6mm past TDC on the compression stroke. and I set the gap at.006" for both inlet and exhaust valves. this has solved a lot of the starting issues I get with customers mowers. saying that, I appreciate your video and your channel as it has helped me with other issues in the past. thanks :-)
I've never seen that punch trick before, of course never had this seat problem, good vid.
been in the briggs manual for years
I've seen Mustie1 do that before.
Great video, from start to finish. Been looking for a video to see someone repair a valve seat that damaged head. Now I’m ready to go and attempt a repair. Thank you for this video.
Don’t forget to buy him a Beer 🍺 - I do Monthly
I've seen a few people now working on lawnmowers and I just want to say dons videos I think are the best and this guy knows his stuff. That's why I'm now only going to watch dons videos and I can say I love them, I only buy broken engines from any thing has a hobby myself but find it so unwinding to watch someone like Don working on them, don't stop making them kind regards colin from croydon surrey England 👍 👍 ❤
Great video Don. That seat is there to stay. That is great you mentioned to the owner that this may not last forever but it most likley will last a long time.
I can tell this guy really knows what he’s doing gives you a good view and a good explanation and I really enjoyed it and learned a lot I mean he doesn’t fall around like others fix Tyrell fixtures at all and I’m a very serious person I preferred this way
Thanks to people like you I have learned so much. I fix my own machines without worry.
Donny boy is awesome. Just helped me with a head gaskey repair and timing of my engine. Thanks a lot.
Yes he is. 👍🏻
Good repair Don! That's all that one could hope for. I'm always torn between repair and replace when I'm looking at a couple hundred dollars. Thanks
First rate tutorials. I'm a second-rate DIY mechanic and every minute I watch is a minute I save. Keep it up just like you're doing it now. Thanks.
Me too - but I call myself a shade tree Mechanic 👍🏻
Helpful detailed tutorial once again! Great filming and very good pace! Thank you Don 😁
Edited perfectly. Doing the same job on a flathead Kawasaki minus the valve seat. Thank you for your time.
this is literally the most useful mower repair video ive ever seen in my life thank you so much for taking the time to make it
Great video. I've found the best way to seat the valve seat is to put the valve in and tap on it with a socket. This ensures that the valve will seat evenly in operation.
definitely one of the best small engine mechanics I know of.. excellent video and presentation.. JD
Great vid as always. Been a small engine mechanic for 12 yrs and if I ever have an adjustment that far off I make it a habit to remove the push rods and check them before I even setting the lash.
Or some kind of compression check.
Wouldn't start, turns over easy. Just like my Kohler K241AQS engine. I also had lots of blow by in the crankcase. Almost was blowing the dip stick out. Broke down engine for rebuild and found the exhaust valve has been leaking. Rings are warn with end gap almost 1/4 inch, but no ridge at the top of the cylinder wall. Going back together with standard size parts and new valves which will be lapped in. Your video is spot on. Thanks for sharing.
Good job as usual Donny. Thanks for the video.
Great video. I will start mine tomorrow. Hope it goes as easy. Thank you.
Great fix! Glad to hear it is still workingafter all this time.
excellent video, and good edits. Thanks
Diagnosis, troubleshooting, hand lapping valves, this video has it all. Great work Dony.
Really!!! You think so?!!!!
Thanks I'm learning a lot from you !!you are really a good teacher as well as a great technical mac
Man, I actually went to a lot of trouble signing in just to give props to you for a very clear instructions. Thanks man! *Subscribed.
Good video, one very important note:
This engine comes equipped with a compression release on the cam, the valve adjustment needs to be performed with the piston 1/4" past TDC on the compression stroke for the release to perform properly. The starting circuit is not strong enough to bleed off the full compression on the cylinder during cranking speeds. Lots of starters and batteries are mistakenly replaced due to this procedure being overlooked. If an Intek of this style is locking during cranking, follow the valve adjustment procedure with the piston in the proper position. This series is notorious for either spinning too freely (lash too tight) or locking (lash too loose) during cranking, the proper valve adjustment is critical.
That's excellent info.
I have a valve issue I would like to discuss with you
I have a B&S 331877-0036-G1, I see the same thing in the B&S repair guides to adjust at 1/4 past TDC. I've read mixed results on the technique. Many people say Don's method always works while other people have problems doing as B&S recommends. I'm working on my mower now and not sure which approach to do.
Every thing I have read about RTV is to let it set for 24 hrs to cure before letting the motor oil contact the RTV. And since I have been following the directions I have not had one leaker to come back
Great troubleshooting video, I learn a lot from watching. Thanks Donyboy
Great video ... thank you ... hope you and your family are doing well... hope to see new videos soon... this stuff never gets old... God Bless
Awesome info, wish I'd known the tapping trick many years ago
I did this same repair on a B&S twin 18 hp 15 years ago, and it is still going strong.
WOW Amazing 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
You do the valve clearance adjustment exactly like I do for years! Never go for TDC👍👍👍
My dad is a automotive machinist I grew up working on all motors red lock tight then punch will keep it there for ever but we would count out the head and install a over sized seat point being very nice job donny.
Wow your good, thorough and well presented, I learned more here than I thought possible. Didnt think I would be capable of this you make it sooooo easy Thank you
Great job, always amazed by your expertise.
Your videos are awesome for an engine dufus like me. Great job and much appreciated.
What an interesting repair, thanks for posting. In my ignorance I might have tried JB weld or some kind of high temp locktite, but I see in the comments that your method is more conventional.
I thought the same, JB weld.
Great job on fixing this big problem.
Like like thumbs up! That valve seat won't pop out again. good video.
I always learn something new here. Thanks Dony.
Great video and very step by step instructional. Now I am going to practice on and old engine.
Don - You just can’t beat that, you tha Man 👨 thank you very much and Im still buying you a beer monthly 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Outstanding ! easy to follow video! great work donyboy!
Thank you for all you do.
This one was very good !
Perfect work !
good fix , thanks . if you don't have the lapping tool and compound , you can chuck the valve stem in your drill and use soft scrub or a similar product .
It`s very nice job of competent man. It doesn't make sense to measure the compression because it was so large a thermal gap on the valve at the beginning. Thank`s for your video. :))
always enjoyable Dony, thank you ...
I've said it before but I will say it again, your videos are superb. Thank you.
thanks man
Man this guy is way better than any small engine guys on CZcams including Bruce Pender
I like ed bassmaster too
There's four top techs on CZcams that I follow. Donyboy73 is the Boss.
thanks lol, do you actually do HVAC and are you in Ontario Canada?
Ontario County, New York State. Just south of Rochester. Don, you have a problem with your furnace? Maybe I can talk you thru. Lord knows, I owe you some info!
furnace in my house is 20 years old, still runs good though, it's an olsen high efficiency - natural gas. I was just wondering what the max life span is
Great video Don! Very informative and easy to follow.
In my world of tool & die making we call that a $ 60,000 dollar a year ping man ,seriously in 45 years of tool making I have done this to solve and save many tools good job !
Awesome video. Need to ck the valve guides thay will move when the engine overheats. Thanks for sharing!!!
Great tutorial! I am definitely book marking it. Thanks for posting this!
Tutorial no, demonstration yes.
Thanks for a great job Don !!
Excellent teaching video sir. Thank you!
I have really enjoyed watching your videos. very informative. I repair all of my own 2 cycle equipment including my chainsaws and OHVs. Love your channel.
Cool, thanks
Great video Dony ! very informative - well done ! step -by- step -
You're a great teacher, excellent video!
I've never worked on small engines before. When they dont work, I just get another one. I did my first value job and I caint believe it was that simple. Now I know for future use.
You came highly recommended by AlchemistLair and I'm glad he did! This could be the fix for the Briggs and Stratton on my Craftsman self-propelled push mower. It has Zero Compression after its 2nd use of the 3rd mowing season. Briggs and Stratton small engine quality sucks since manufacturing was moved to China!!! I never had any issues at all with Craftsman self-propelled push mowers before this one. Thank you, Dony!
also check valve lash
@@donyboy73 Thanks!
Great vid. Your work is amazing and proper. Did notice though that you didn't mention putting oil back in the engine before testing it. Now on to the next lesson.
Yup, I noticed that also. You know he did not put any in on the first start up test but, did not run it long. He should of mentioned putting the proper amount in before starting and completing the job.
Five star video Don; I feel one of your very best! Thank You. Tim.
Agreed. Excellent !
Don’t forget to Byam a beer I do monthly
congrats on the 100k mark you work hard for it
Nice video! Perfect speed. Thank you!
EXCELLENT camera work, lighting, sound. Sound is clean, no wind or background noise. Vocals are clear, concise. I am hoping I don't need to go this far but I will be following this video if I do. THANKS
An excellent step by step process cool and calm presentation. Super cool individual with explenaitions. .
EXCELLENT VIDEO! Thank you for uploading!!!!

Really good video Dony. Learned a lot today. Thanx.
Great video, thank you for all your help.
Another good vid brother, thank you.
Hey Don,
Great instructions from beginning to end .It has been awhile hope all is going well. Joe
good Joe, thanks
That's one complete tutorial, well done.
Owesome Don. Learned many things from ur videos.
Thanks for the video. Runs great. 👍
Thanks for making this repair procedures . Your close up screen shot are great and detailed. It would also be helpful if you can list all the tools you used . Thanks again .
great video... straight to business and no suffering through endless monologues
no bs here lol
Very impressive video. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Don, love watching all your videos.
One reason for a dropped Exhaust Seat is an over heated engine. Always check for grass packed in around the cylinder cooling fins or a plugged flywheel cover screen. Great video and keep up the good work.
Cheers
Willy
I was just going to ask about reasons and/or causes. this answers my question. Thanks!
Good point.. who'd have thought? So the head expands so much that the ring pops out. I usually blow the tractor out with compressor hose after cutting..now I'll be sure to be very thorough around the engine block.
I forgot to mention if you have equipment stored out side watch for mouse/squirrels building nests inside the cooling shroud and around the cylinder. Willy
Excellent video sir thank you for sharing!!!!!
Very detailed video! Thank you.
Nice!
Clever man and perfect job.. thanks for sharing.
I cant believe a new head is 2 to 3 hundred dollars..I've never had to buy one..but I know you know..good repair and good video..thanks Don..Cheers 🍺🍺🇺🇸🇺🇸
Good job ! I am surprised there was not more damage to the head/valve/seat.
