- Sometimes you just wanna have some fun and do something completely different, a great way to 'cleanse your palette' when painting your miniatures. I know what it's like painting a large Warhammer 40,000, Warhammer Fantasy or a very large historical army. Sometimes it just feels tedious and can feel never-ending, especially a horde army. But there is a great way to invigorate your imagination and take a break so you can avoid hobby burnout. And in this video, we take a look at a method that has helped me many times over the years, the 'Blank Canvas' approach! Here I grab a miniature that I've never painted before and approach it in a completely different way by choosing a colour palette outside of my norm and I just have fun with it! I have found that this really helps me and gives me motivation and a break to continue my other projects and get them finished for those all important games and campaigns. Oh, and the model used was sent to us with no obligation to use by our friends at Mini Wargaming (www.miniwargaming.com) from their upcoming Ravaged Star miniature line (ravagedstar.com), we just liked it so much and was perfect for the subject of this video.

Hi Duncan,
I’ve just realised we met briefly at the UK Games Expo. I gave you a 6mm miniature, it should have been an army or two lol.
All the best and thank you for stopping and looking at Grumbler Miniatures.
Love your work.
When you are google image searching for inspiration and you already have a color in mind you can click on the grey "tools" button that should be right of search type selection below the search bar itself. When you do, you can filter your results by both color (if you have one already in mind) and by resolution (to increase the quality of the result).
What great advice. Just learned something new....
Cyberpunk daemonettes…. I think I’m onto something, thanks Duncan!
That sounds like a great idea for sure!
That mini is awesome. I totally hear you regarding needing palate cleanser mini every now and again too.
For sure! It really helps from time to time! And the mini is pretty awesome too.
'Palette cleanser'
This was a sensational video. Great job going slowly through the video and making that mini pop. I'm really happy to see you do indie minis like this and bring them to life.
Wow, thank you so much for the wonderful reply and we are glad you enjoyed it :-)
This is such a fantastic video, because you both approach the topic of hobby burnout as well as your theoretical research into what you believe would mesh well for your mini. Looking forward to seeing more of these new types of videos in future!
Thanks, it was a little different to our normal fare
This is great!! I've wanted to paint a mini in the cyberpunk style but color/lighting always seems like the hard part. This made it feel so much more manageable so cool!!
Awesome. We're glad we could help. If unsure, study some reference images 😊
The Standerd Grey really helps raise the brightness of the colour on the ganger, mostly the Hot Pink on the hair.
Always good to see you work, Mr. Rhodes. I've always told people to follow your work, because your present an accessible and attainable standard for painting that doesn't intimidate new painters. Too many 'paint tutorials' out there focus on painting ONE miniature to insane detail using complicated, expensive tools like airbrushes and various blending techniques.
Great miniature & even greater paint scheme 👍 Gonna steal it for my Infinity Morats 😜
this quick paint job was really refreshing to see u were right duncan
Nice to see you start to use some Wave 2 paints. And I LOVE the look of this Ravaged Star mini. I don’t know if it will be in the Veil Touched, or part of the new game coming later this year, but I totally want it!
Had to laugh when the first choice for a cyberpunk mini was a literal pink mohawk
I think my favourite thing about Duncan's videos is that there's always loud, pulse pounding intro music like you'd hear on a "Call of Duty MLG Headshots Compilation" video... then a lad who looks and sounds like a youth pastor comes on and goes "Hello everyone, today I'm going to show you some lovely new highlighting techniques 👨🎨 "
😂😂😂 Thank Rog for that!
I love the color choice! TBH when I saw the 'color swatch' for the hair at the beginning, I thought the hair would be more hot pink, which is what I personally would have gone for.
Pink so hot it'll like your hand on fire when you touch the mini...and would go with that punk '80s neo-cyberpunk feel. :)
Great video! The mini came out amazing! I love the color selection.
Thanks so much!
Great video, great model and great paint job. The Cyberpunk colour scheme was so refreshing and eye catching!
Stunning love your guidance
Seeing the 3-D print textures I was skeptical, but they disappeared while you were painting. Great job, especially showing the inspiration process.
that came together so nicely
Loving the music 🎧 🤘🏽
That ended up looking quite incredible.
Thanks :-)
Always nice to do something different.
Holy sh...! Looks amazing!
Borderlands Hyperion yellow it screams to me. I love it.
Borderlands sure was an inspiration :-) Great game too
This mini turned out really nice. What I found out for me, especially with Space Marines is, that mixing the main Legion with successor chapters keeps me more invested in the amry. I play Iron Hands and I started putting in some Sons of Medusa and Knights of Byzantium into my army, and that gives it some much needed variation.
Awesome video! I really missed the overhead shots of you preparing the paint though, those have been invaluable to me learning how to thin and what you're looking for in each layer.
Looking forward to wave 2 when it reaches retailers!
Damn dude, that came out great. I’m looking forward to getting the 2nd wave of your paints.
This is real artwork mate 😮
Wow, thanks for lovely comment. It was fun to do
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA your videos have helped me a lot in painting my Grimdark figures, thank you a lot👍
Great paint job!
Ok. That is a nice mini. I may have to get one for a House Escher gang leader.
It's a really nice sculpt for sure :-)
What a fantastic model,great job Duncan!🏆 Somehow,I knew a hot pink mohican was coming,on this figure...😄
It just cries out for it lol
Thank you i really appriciate these types of videos that help in developing ones own style
Awesome, and thank you for commenting :-)
rly cool!
Just in time (I am actually thinking about paiting some previous miis of the month with a Cyberpuk vibes) ! Great video as always !
Awesome mini love the colours
Thanks, it was fun to do
That model is loud! It pops beautifully. It's funny. You look at the sculpt and see Cyberpunk, I saw something that wouldn't be out of place in Mad Max Fury Road. She's exactly one fast vehicle away from screaming that she's awaited in Valhalla.
Palette cleanser models are a great way to take a break from painting an army. Games Workshop have been doing a model of the month thing for a while and I usually use those free models to do something completely different. (Also, my local Warhammer store does painting competitions with then and those are always good.)
Thats a great idea and to use the free models as a palette cleanser, perfect!
Would be cool to see you do a whole random generated Kill-Sample-Process crew
I love this and we'll use it on my GF's Sisters of Battle. Could we maybe get a video on a more anime style/ cel shading effect for models? I make a lot of 3D print anime mini's but painting them gives me trouble.
i'm super tempted to use this colour scheme for a contingent of adepta sororitas to join my order of the sacred rose host.
Go for it!
This was so helpful and exactly what I needed for inspiration! Love this hobby and your videos! Can you please paint up one of the mermaid models by Gilded Lion Miniatures? Those are pure art and I’d love to see what you could do with one of them! Especially since I just bought some of them myself and would love to get some tips before starting them. Thank you!
Very fun!
Thanks. it was a little different and fun
Amazing! What a nice way to show the qualities of your paint range! Are you going to do painting guide for star wars shatterpoint?
Thanks, yes, we will do more for sure. We did Ahsoka last week for the Academy :-)
It’s always fun to see original projects and the creative process in bringing minis to life. Do you plan on making a tutorial video for the Lieutenant Titus model in the not so far future?
We might do for sure
Hi Duncan. First of all, thank you for tips you give in your videos, always appreciated and useful. Then, I was wondering if you could point me to the colors needed from your two thin coats paint collection in order to paint ghoul skins pls? By tradition (so to speak for it's more a matter of being used to their colors and how they react), I always use citadel paints, I never felt the need of getting other brands but I would be curious to try yours. Nonetheless, I am sure which one to use and how they react. So before buying, if you could tell me pls. Thank you in advance
"A pallete cleanser"
I see what you did there
😊
Started a Raptor Army (Green Marines) using your old GW guide from 5 years ago
Oh wow! Thats going back awhile :-)
Hi Duncan, I recently found out that John Blanche has retired. Have you ever considered painting something in the "blanchitsu" style/palette? Just for fun!
Really enjoyed this video. Will you be trying out other aesthetics like steampunk, vapourwave, etc using the two thin coats paints?
Maybe...😉
Doin' it.
Looks a lot like a Harlequin .
I'm always curious... how long did it take you to paint this mini? It looks great.
Sitting down to paint at home with no distractions...maybe 3-4 hours max 😊
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA ooof... I spend too long 🤣
Question: why are you using colour Forge sprays? Are they better than the alternatives from GW or the army painter or is it something else? I just noticed the switch and wanted to ask if there's a reason for it
We think they are really good and a little cheaper. 😊
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA I did Struggle a bit with the army painter Spray, for some reason I always got a very unpleasant sandy texture on my minis.
@zarknutzbrewgargler9200 They're cheaper, more in a can and are colour matched to citadel. Also a huge variety
How did the painter help his friend in winter?
He gave her another coat(or two thin coats).
Touche
Just an FYI Duncan, you need to remove the / from the ravaged star url end as it gives an error rn :)
Thanks :-)
Is jade green an emerald green the same colour? Or is jade green a new product
Nullus est instar Domus!
Anyone else seeing a cat face on the chest armor?
Just letting you know the ravagedstar link is broken in the description 👍
Weird, it's this very one...ravagedstar.com/
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA It's the closed bracket being included in the link at the end of it that's causing the issue I think, you'll see it's blue in the description
Hello i try to buy the paints but i cant find
Hello, here is a link to all the current store holding the paints :-)

Conspiracy theory: Peachy and Duncan are still in contact and planning their videos just to tease us, because how else have they both done videos on the EXACT SAME SUBJECT (hobby burnout and having some fun to fix it, though both the videos have completely different solutions fyi) only days apart, far to short a time for Duncan to have filmed this after Peachy’s? I refuse to believe it’s a coincidence.
#DuncanAndPeachyCollabASAP
Purely coincidence tbh lol
Looks nice but it doesn't quite read as "cyberpunk" to me. It looks more like a Dark Eldar figure. Cyberpunk to me means more vibrant, cartoon-like colors, more eye popping red, greens and pinks. This looks muted...
Would have been nice if you had painted one of the actual line of miniatures for the Cyberpunk Red tabletop RPG, but understandable you used what someone sent you. Still a fun and unique paint job, tho.
Thanks. It was a fun video to make and do something different.
