ROTTEN 1967 Camaro Quarter Panel FIASCO - Nothing Fits!

- čas přidán 27. 01. 2024
- Today we tackle the quarter panels on our 1967 Chevy Camaro. Before the panels go on I had to replace the wheel tubs and modify the trunk floor for everything to fit.
Unfortunately the rear panels didn't fit great and will require a fair amount of surgery to fit properly. Slowly but surely the rust is being cut out.

Watching Dan work through the ill fitting quarter panel was fun. TBH, I stopped buying the $400 panels and now I just bite the bullet and buy the $800+ premium quarters now because the money saved always turned into hours and hours and hours and hours of metal work to get the cheap crap to fit. Buy once cry once - but at least it'll fit.
I'm sure some of the hard core Camaro guys are having their heads explode right now . They are missing the point . You took a car that probably would have gotten parted out and scrapped and are building a nice solid drivable car that is getting put back on the road . Huge respect for your skills at saving these cars .
You always hear tubers say "We saved her and put her back on the road" then you look in their backyard and there they set back in the trees rusting away again (they got their content and free parts from it). Unless they fix and sell them like a few do, most just continue to rust away aka "patina" never paint. Why waste time and money painting when your just going to let it rust away.
Well said.
Totally agree, so many great cars disappear
@@SadPuppySoup many old cars should be in a shelter. Window channels are often leaks and get into interior and slowly ruins the floorpan.
@@SadPuppySoupwell if you're worried why don't you put them on the road 😂 all the best to you all
Sir.... half the battle is having fun and keeping a positive attitude. You have nailed it. Bravo.
Seriously. Your comments about how amatures/novices would feel and how you get burnt out...that's what I love most about you.
I can't believe the amount of work that goes into a project like this. I admire you for keeping a cool head with the fit on that panel. I think you have the right idea in splitting it, bring it to where it needs to be and fill it in. When you are finished with the project no one will be the wiser. Keep up the great work. You got this.
The inconsistency of the replacement stamping has been a frustration we’ve all dealt with for a long time. I feel your pain. 1967 mustang fastback 1/4 panels drove me nuts.
Dan here,DD bodyshop haha. That car would definitely be a keeper for me after all the work you put in it.Also a 67 is the best looking year Camaro in my opinion. When it's done you know it's done right because you did it yourself.
Yeah I dig it
'68 RS/SS is fine looking machine .. not as simple looking as a '67 .. and I hate Chevy's, but I like that & a '65,'66 & '69 Chevelle
@tomboone201 I like the wing window,and 67 is my favorite Camaro,but I'm a 69 Firebird 400 guy.
@@Jdwescott nice choice, I agree on the poncho, 67 just looks simple minded & 68 looks a bit more refined, I'm a Mopar guy in Detroit you buy where your family worked ..like '68 RR doesn't hold a candle to later ones and I've never been a dodge guy ..only like the '65, '66 chargers .. more of a Plymouth guy
@tomboone201 I like mopar as well with my favorites being a 69 charger and a 70 440 6pack Roadrunner
Dan love your channel. your the hardest working guy on the net. I've enjoyed watching all your builds and you've got me motivated to drag my old car out of the barn that's been there since the 80's. maybe. will see
Oh ya! Get wrenching on it
That front end is glowing from the Dan touch! Glad you are continuing to dig into the piggy pile of parts and making cool things happen.
I honestly don't know why you guys haven't hit a million subscribers yet. Mayber that's actually a good thing for viewers. There were a couple of other car channels I used to watch when they first got started out, and I loved their content. Then they grew and grew and got off into things I really had no interest in. But more subscribers means more money. I love watching the bodywork videos. It's something I never got into. Here in AZ, U.S. it was always easy to find a good solid rust free car to start with, and all it needed was the mechanical stuff. That is no longer the case. All the good stuff is either gone, or costs more than someone like me can afford. There is still a lot of stuff here that someone like you could piece back together. We need to preserve all the vintage cars we can, as nothing like them will ever be made again. Keep making videos and I'll keep watching 'em.
I like what I see. The patience and perseverance of Dan is really something. "Well, it's just another thing to fix." Loads of stuff to learn here, too. Thanks DD Dan - as in DareDevil ..
Hey Danny, As you may know I've been watching you from the beginning of this journey of yours. I've seen every video you've put out on car building and repair. I've got to say you've come a long way baby. I remember how much you double checked yourself on your 55 - 2 door from 4 door project, where now you just go for it. Experience is key with panel replacement, rust repair and it shows. It's great to see the difference and the progress you've made. I for one love to watch how you've advance with their own expertise and how comfortable you are in front of the camera now. 2 points for you buddy and keep them coming. Later
At least I got you and others to watch doing the stuff I’ve always wanted to do but couldn’t. I believe I’ve about given up on trying to build something cool. Keep up the awesome content, love seeing you make stuff work/fit in an affordable and easier way.
As usual, you figure out at way to make things work! Always impressed with your "We Can Do It" attitude! Great Job Dan!
Hey Dan check the vertical face at the tail panel area of the new quarter and compare it to the original. I can’t quite make it out in the video but i have seen where that area needs trimmed down to match original and then It pulls in tighter and closes the gap. They have almost a 1/4” too much metal in that area. Just something to check. Love the car and the project keep up the nice work.
tape measure doesn't lie. poor panel. seen it before.
Dan, you are so talented. Imagine if you couldn't weld? That's me. I'm old now, but back in the day (1980s) I walked away from so many cool cars, just because I couldn't fix rust. Keep up the good work and much respect for you! ❤
Buddy you got bbb, big brass balls. Fearless. Outside my wheel house. Educational video x10.
Just put panels on my '68 Camaro, pain in the bak side. Test fit the bumper, might be able to trim a little around the tail light area to bring it in some. Keep up the good work, fun to watch and I actually feel your pain
Grew up doing bodywork with my dad....needless to say I haven't done any work in a long time....I do not miss it....I really appreciate the work you guys do....keep hotrods alive....minivans suck especially Volvo & BMW
Yeah. I could only do my own fun stuff
It's nice to see that all these other CZcamsrs are willing to share information and advise. The car community is amazing.
Your doing great work. This is exactly why i havent tackled tge rear quarter on my 72 chevelle. The new stampings dont seem to lind up correctly anymore.
To bad about that quarter being off, I like your idea of splitting it. A 1/2 inch from the edge and a filler strip. And you should have in in the right spot..
You’ll never see old Mortski get elbow deep into a car like this that’s for sure.🇺🇸🛠🇺🇸🤣
He gets one of the staff to do the dirty jobs! Lol!
Great job, cool to see old hot rods put back on the road again.
What I've learned from DD Speed Shop: Good muck coatings are called Schmoo and bad mud coatings are called Schmuck. 👍
Dan, You've become a one-man Detroit General motors.
Evercoat 816 panel bond uses a standard caulking gun. 3/M 08116 panel bond uses a special gun. Both very good products.
Looking good buddy! That's a lot of work in a short time, for sure! You'll get the trunk gap sorted and she'll be fine... looking forward to seeing it come together! Cheers from here...
It's definitely going to be a solid car when you're done! All the frustration will be kinda worth it when you finally see the finshed product and once you get behind the wheel and cruise around in it you might forget about most of the frustration! 😅 Thanks for sharing! 😁👍
I am impressed at the good condition of that window, channel and trunk gutter… Seriously, my mid Atlantic car was much worse
You're the expert not me, but it seems to me that the problem started with the wheel tub. I would have spent more time positioning it correctly which would have solved many of your issues. Great car and I appreciate the video. Keep going Dan.
Hang in there fella. I’m loving this build. We all learn when you have problems. You are appreciated sir.
Lots of work, worth it in the end. A guy can appreciate all the hard work. Too bad with the trunk gap, and now forced you into bodywork you wanted to avoid. I’d be a little miffed. When i did rears on my jimmy i sent 2 panels back due to taillights fitting terrible.
Great job Dan. I solid welded and metal finished all the seams on mine. Minimal filler needed and was easier to get the 50 year old metal to fit,
I hear ya
Good job Dan, that's gonna be such a nice car man. You will have a lot of fun with it in the end 👍👍
Tough one on the driver side quarter panel fitment. She’s looking pretty nice. Cheers!! 😎
Well, I learned something from you today. When I remove glass i heated the blade on the knife. I saw you heat the Butel/Window kit. It hit me like a ton of bricks. Why have I not been doing this. I have done this for years, Learned from a very good glass man. he always heated the knife. Thank You ! I never even thought about it. DANG.
Haha I ain't no expert
I have two 1969 Camaro ‘s when your done. You’ve got guts to be doing this. Can’t stop watching. Keep up the good work.
Yeah. She's a little rusty haha
I love it. I needed a laugh I lost a son today and it’s no joke. But I have been in your spot but I was still glad to have the panels to weld in. Making the panels and then welding them in was a real joke. Tags, wire, and what ever was laying around.. because of y’all I made a special trip to a gas station!!! Dani love Buc-ee’s . The biggest one on 40 in Tennessee. He was there the wife had to have a picture. Good stuff
Try the old trunk lid. It's hit or miss on aftermarket first gen camaro trunk lids
my thoughts too but then Dan measured the quarters at the taillight panel and the re pop was over 1/2 inch narrower across the top which would increase the trunk gap
Aftermarket deck lids are terrible!!!
Always amazes me how much work you do on CZcams. You inspire and educate me. Thanks. 21:54
On unibody cars I was taught to always cross brace the body before cutting anything out, but you have your own way of doing things and it seems to work for you, I am NOT critiquing you at all, Love everything you have done in the past. I truly wish you lived closer to me , I would help for free I absolutely LOVE what you do
Dan, I had an early model Camero years ago. Every one I saw ALWAYS rusted out around both rear wells. Make sure water can't get in there and rust yours out too.👍👍
your a lot better teacher than you think you are. the bits and pieces you show help a lot of people.
Incredible reconstruction work.
Dan... I did state in an Earlier Video how my buddy who did those Two Black '63 split windows For the Dealership owner -- How to hang those Camaro Quarters & attatch them to the Trunk Surround. I'm Not Hatin' but.. After the weld is Ground & with a little Filler you'd never notice the seam. You certainly couldn't tell how they were Hung & overlapped about a 1/2 inch on my '69 Camaro. It's spilled milk now. You'll get it fixed & probably Have gotten it fixed by the time I've posted this. "Keep Pushin' On" You Are One of the Best on the *Tube.*
Oh P.S. Thanks for changing that Hat.... Lloyd
I wouldn't have thought there was so much work getting bigger wheel tubs, as I watching you put the panel on I was thinking back to my experience with a fender that didn't match up everywhere & hoping you wouldn't have the same problem but you did & that sucks, big time, but I believe you got a great plan to make it right, it will definitely be worth it all when it's finished!👍
Just a thought, I would not cut the left quarter panel until you got the new rear body panel set in place. But that's just me. I've done body work most of my life. We all do things a little different and that's ok. I really like watching your videos!
There is a youtuber named Chris Birdsong out of Vegas area who has a fixation with Mopar similar to yours with Tri 5s. He rebuilds old Mopars using repop panels and he actually did a video or two showing the problem areas with repops and what he did to fix it to look original. Mind you he was working on a late 60s charger but the problems were similar, like the trunk to window fit. Just a thought. That car is going to ROCK when you are done.
I generally try to get a new taillight panel and or rear valance when I do quarter panels to make my life easier and a torch is your friend when you’re dealing with the lead seam
hugely frustrating, but the good thing is you got the knowledge and tools to fix, keep rocking it dude!
Ya cut on the trunk line. Just like you said pull it apart . You are on the right track. Sucks the aftermarket parts are never great. They always have bad stamps
Yeah. Could of been nicer. Owell
Yep aftermarket parts. Last time I saw this, both places needed split, spread out and sheetmetal added to the gaps. Good luck buddy. Cheers from Junk's Automotive
Pete at the DIY Auto School channel had an issue with Camaro quarters in one of his videos. I think one brand was half an inch shorter than another. If the driver's side panel is off by a quarter inch, as you just showed I would have the vender you bought it from replace it with a correct size one.
Keep up the good work Dan! My 2 cents here.. Even though there are some fitment issues afoot with the quarter panel, it wouldnt hurt to see how your alignment looks with the original deck lid even if it is crusty. Seems like the aftermarket hoods and trunk lids are a little cattywompus and may make it super difficult to get things the way you want them using it as a guide.
Dan, I appreciate how hard it is to do all that cutting, grinding and fitting of new body panels. I have cut up several cars like that and it can be very labor intensive and frustrating. I am not a fan of cutting out spot welds and re-welding the panel in at the same points. It is not fun. You are doing fine work.
That is one of the biggest reasons I went with stock replacement wheel wells. I dig your way around cutting the rails. 😊
Great one Dan, I feel your frustration!!!!!
Misfit replacement panels are common I've done a lot of 1st generation Camaros and biggest percentage needs some modifying it is a pain but you are doing great
I do understand about replacing body panels. It is a pain in the ass, I had to do it with my old Mustang.
split the panel 1/2 inch away from the trunk Edge as far as you need to and bring the panel to line up with the trunk (like you said) do the same with the corner by the window.. its a pretty common procedure when working with an aftermarket piece of sheet metal... I can't remember if you have another trunk but you may want to check it with an original or measure an original trunk.. good work Dan!.. don't stress you'll get there and it will be beautiful!
Good advice! I would do it like you said and Dan is probably thinking the trunk lid is correct. Here is the problem Dan will aready have done the work his way before he ever see's your comment. He will do a good job as usual but may require a little moreplastic filler.
@@garyrichards407yes possibly.. I am going to go outside and measure my 68 Firebird trunk and post the measurement so he can check it... should be the same
Love the way he waves Danni over! Great Video as usual!
Dan the floor pan man great video in the trunk the brace where you had your welding helmet under you should have cut some short pieces of box steel and put it under that piece you had going across and welded it to the truck floor. You are going to replace that part of the truck floor anyway. Remember bracing is your friend. otherwise good job.
Try to put the old lid on maybe the lid is a problem or the new quarter is under size remember your not the only one that make mistakes we all do love your content thanks
hey Dan, Chin up man. Although that panel is as bad as I have seen they all pretty much need to be adjusted for width at the back. also pay attention to the height of the rear edge from the tail panel to the top of the quarter at the trunk line. those are notoriously off as well. You are on the right track. center up your trunk and slit both sides to make the gap perfect. I have some videos on the same issues. also don't be shocked if you need to adjust the arch at the top of the quarter to match the trunk line. that is usually pretty short so it needs to be built out. One other point to make your head explode. try to fit it up with the original trunk first. there is nothing saying that the trunk edges are any more correct than the quarter lines. Another little trick, hook a ratchet strap into the side bumper holes and run the strap under the quarter and hook it to the opposite frame rail and you can pull that bottom right in. Oh and one more thing. the 67 trunk floor drop offs all need to be split and manipulated too to fit the floor pan. My email is listed on my channel, feel free to reach out if you have any questions or just need to vent! Hang in there man. It will be worth it when you are done!
Dude!!! Everytime I watch a full quarter replacement on other channels!!! They have the same problem!!! But!!! You guys do the same thing!!! Wait to weld the hole thing!!! Waiting for the crappy!!! quality control to show up!!! Great video!!! Spring break is coming!!!✌️
Dan great job on the car ,im doing a 70 firebird same thing and more .
You need to get yourself a beaadroller and an english wheel ,nice chunck of I-beam (sheet metal brake lol) and a slip roller ,the amount of cars you work on ,you could save yourself a tone of money making your ownwheel tubes ,floors rockers ,and if you have shrinker stretcher set ( princess auto 16 ga) with your skills ,and abilities you could save a tone ,all the floors and truck for a 70 is 2000 grand for all the stuff ,im going to make it all from firewall to back new panel 4 sheets @90 $ea canadian 😊,thats the best part and the 3x2x.188 tube (frame have to make ) 200 canadian ,just saying then it more money to spend on other parts ,then because you do everything it fits lol, yeah the new panels need lots of fitting .
On the panel thing from what i could find out premium panels are NOS by if you can find ,the research i didnt found me out this Amd ,Dynachore ,Sherman and Goodwark are stamped in Taiwan, good mark forsure Taiwan stamped in it ,all the rest stamped in china ,companies ship dies oversea ,the thing i could find out are it how good the die assembler is ,thats how good your panel fits ,we got the 70 firebird full 1/4 panel and tail light piece all good mark the rear panel fits terrible ,but after some stretching snd some shrinking its ok now not an inch out ,passenger fits way better than drivers side 70 truck same as yours opposite, to tight ,going to have to cut just like your ,new matel so not so bad those 3 panels over 3grand Canadian, you have more than enough skills Dan to do the framerails ,Hell you turn a 4 door car into a 2 door ,so you could easily backhalf a car and make your our tins ,more money for more toys :)😊 (beadroller, shrinker stretcher set ,4ft brake ,sliproller and english wheel) those kind of toys lol
Great job ,love the channel ,cant wait to whats next ,Dan and Dani
It’s worth all your effort, they were pretty cool cars
Wow a lot of work to make it fit. But coming along nicely Dan!
The camaro is coming along quite nicely and quickly 👌
Glad you keep moving along and working out the kinks!
"Nothing Fits". Been there, done that on my 67 Camaro. A lot of hammering needed to persuade parts. Dan, I need to make a 67 Camaro top mold so I can make a removable Hardtop for my 67 Camaro convertible. There might even be a good budget for it. It's for SEMA
Keep up the good work. My favourite 3 vehicles from the sixties are the 67 Camaro, 66 Mustang Fastback and the 61-66 Ford Econoline Pickup, just because it’s different. But as all good vehicles of my youth Ontario versions were only half there when I was able to drive. In 1975, I did own a 67 Mustang with free winter A/C and enjoyed it immensely, until rust took it away. What you are able to do is something I wish I had done, I was a good mechanic, but a horrible body man.
All good picks
Feel your pain Dan… keep smiling. Your ‘can do’ attitude gave me the confidence to tackle a 73 Alfa GTV with my son. Now, if you want to avoid frustration I would advise against tackling a mid 70’s built Italian car…. 😂
Looking great, guys who work at body shops are using the air powered 1/2" belt grinders instead of drilling spot welds in most cases, faster and leaves a clean spot to plug weld, they sell one at princess and amazon sells belts at a reasonable price.
I can empathize with you about the frustration of having new parts that do not fit as well as desired. There are YT channels from restoration shops that have shown the same panel defects. I can see that you are not ready to quit. I imagine that this car will be looking good in the near future.
The rear glass as well as the windshield is held in using a butyl kit. I last changed a 67-8 Camaro glass probably 40 plus years ago. Use urethane when you reinstall the glass. Much better adhesion. Your doing great . Keep it up young man!
Oh for sure. Thanks buddy!
Yes you are totally right my brother told me that is 68 Firebird back window used to pop up when he closed the door.. that old butyl sucked😂
I was smoking tires on my 69 chevelle, starting wheel hopping and back glass fell out
Hilarious😂.. my brothers started coming loose around 1970 to 1971.. pretty sketchy for a 3-year old car but they didn't have the technology we have today
Yup... Butyl was "Awesome"... Worked like screen doors on a submarine... My '72 Nova, has the rustd out dash and Floorplans, to attest to that. 😔😔😔
I’ve had that same problem along the trunk line with aftermarket quarters from time to time and I split them and weld in a pie shaped filler
i feel your pain dan , i just finshed a 67 camaro all the same stuff is you except for new trunck pan full new floors new inner and outer rockers, rear frame rails ,full rear panel. not much original . and yes fittment on the after market stuff is all hit and miss and makes for a lot more work than it should be . but i would do it again , keep up the good fight
Yeah. Not much you can do about it
Metal screws and slightly larger hole drilled and clamps no welding till fitted makes panel fitting easier so things can be wiggled around
Hey Dan you should be able to plug weld the front of the quarter to the top of the rocker from the inside where the quarter glass is if you roll the quarter glass up and you won't have to cut a line with a grinder that's how they weld it from the factory.
Knowledge is power! Great series #DDSpeedshop
Little more Love, little more patience and you`ll have the `ol girl looking Sweet !!! You Dan, are the Sheet Metal Wizard !!! You guys are Great !!!
You keep doing what you do.... Never mind the NAYSAYERS, you are great at what you do..... Your plan is solid..... Your plan of a 350 is fine, however you do have that 454, really ponder that idea.... Should you alltam
I saw on a Chip Foose video that he had to cut a pannel or two along the fold to straighten out the gaps. You are moving in the right direction. Everyone has the same problem so it's par for the course.
Dan are those GM Panels. Hard to find but possible, Kindda. That deck lid should have been put on the car. I did that once when I first started out, Screwed up bad. The guy I was working for got Cross Canada Pnls. Instead of Factory Pnls. Trying to save the customer money. You know, Heck with your employees, Shortly after that I opened My own shop for a few years. Difference was I was working with a door and Quarter and B pillar. Just the Quarter was a cross Canada. I finally said F it and told the owner to get me a quarter. He got it and it was done in a day, Long Day!
I think it would be quicker if you just listed what sheet metal you AREN'T replacing :) Holy mother of pearl! You have bitten off a KING size piece with this one, but as usual you are killing it! Keep up the good work.
I feel your pain. That's about the worst I've seen a panel, I've fixed small gaps but that one is 3 miles off. Quality control isn't that difficult, I'm not really sure how that even happens.
Good morning from Cape Cod 🦈 the inconsistency of that replacement panel is most unfortunate. But I do know you will make it work. I'm surprised the left and rear panels aren't identical coming from the same company 😕 I'm a huge Camaro fan and I have faith that you'll turn this car into a beauty. Keep up the great work and the awesome content Dan 👍✌️🇺🇲
You’re still a hero to me, man, I know what this feels like - total f’n bummer. ur awesome! Dani’s awesome!
That is exactly what i had to do was split the panel and filled in with metal rod it 'looking good always a few snags with repo panels AMD are the best fitting but they have jumped the price up so i go with the next best brand OER.
Hay Dan 👋, replacement parts are so fun. You have the right idea on it. But, yes it a pain to get new parts that you have to modify to work. I know you can handle it . Keep up the great videos. 👍
Always complaints on rust repair panels, luckily for you, you already have a plan and the know how. Good video of how hard it is to replace a full quarter. Cheers
Dan I restored a 70 Nova 15 years ago and ran into similar problems, I was so frustrated, I nearly pulled all my hair out, didn’t have all that much to begin with, looks like the aftermarket hasn’t cleaned up there act yet lol
Hey, Dan: In spite of all the fit problems you prevailed and made it work.If Greta Van Fleet made a new song about you and DD Speedshop, they would call it, ' Meeting the Metal Master'
You know what I think is cool the projects keep getting better more work more money and very cool 😎
Great montage music this time Dan you got a lot of work done but will so worth it keep rocking on Mike
Just did a 67 firebird make sure you put them paddle braces at top corners of truck opening on bottom first thing maro guys feel for when inspecting your work..
Good time to lube the back slide up Windows Dan .🤔🎯
Having spoken with a body guy about his camaro, he said he had to tweak the "frame, body" to get things to line up. Was a long process and frustrating but got it done.
