    Learn how to “load the boat” if you notice something is off. Oftentimes as a med student, you will spend the most time with patients. If you see a scary lab value or your patient has acute changes, pass the info up the chain of command as soon as possible.

    Death and dying are rough. The sleep deprivation and insane amount of pressure can not be conducive to learning. I know trauma docs and surgeons are different. But why push people to make mistakes due to fatigue? Too many 18 hour nursing shifts in nursing homes for this old gal. Do not want the responsibility or liability of a doctor.

    I had a 3.9 GPA and 8 months left to finish my biochem degree. I was already studying for the mcat and after working 2 years at a hospital and shadowed many doctors I had to face the fact it simply wasn't for me. That field is a lifestyle, not a career. I simply realized that working 70 hours a week was not what I considered a good use of my life. I will say though that I have met truly passionate people in this profession and they absolutely love it. Long story short is being completely honest with yourself is the most important thing, and don't forget you truly have the ability to do whatever you want as long as you work hard

    • @Arachisage
      @Arachisage Před rokem +2

      I had believed I'd be ok with working 70-80h a week in medicine. The kicker was the overnight stuff. That sleep deprivation, even for just a few years, was not something I think I can handle at the age of 31 or 33 when I'm done.
      if you'd ask me to work Monday to Sunday, 8am to 9pm daily, but have time to get a good night's rest, in a subject like medicine (that I'd like), I'd do it. But if my sleep is gone, my mental health will be gone again (as it had been)
      do I feel like I've wasted my 3.8 and 516? sometimes. Now I feel directionless, wonder what I can do with that

    • @mr.least19
      @mr.least19 Před 4 měsíci +1

    Working in ICUs as an RD intern I've learn to always be kind to the patients and around them. You never know if that is the last time you'll see them, or if you're the last person they'll see. You never know if a rude comment someone makes its the last thing they'll hear. So just be always kind.

    It's good to see a new wave of medical professionals--ones who recognize that doing everything on the edge of a knife isn't the best way to keep our "troops" in order.
    Gee, I wonder why after being hated by the old guard and the educational system we expect patients to treat them any better? Or why medical professionals rank 3 of the first 5 in professions for addiction and suicide? 🤔

    That last one needs to be taught to some vet people. Patience and understanding was in surprisingly short supply from some people at my extern for animal people and people in a profession like that one. Only one person really seemed to see how it was affecting me to be told I had “messy” hair when it wasn’t messy, just not exactly like it was on most days or told something that happened because of something I don’t have control over and should’ve been mentioned in the moment and not two hours later. I will always be grateful to that one guy, but the others really put me off from clinic jobs and that makes me sad
