I never realized until I became a parent that their are two ways to see the Breakfast Club. As a teenager I identified with the characters. As a parent it made me aware of how my actions can affect my teen. It was cautionary.
Yes, very very true. 1975 grad
You hit the nail on the head!
My god, Ally Sheedy is still a stunner!
Her character is one of my favorites in this movie.
@@roberttimstarliper1671 an eternal hottie
This interview is twenty years ago. 😅
All Sheedy's smile is still infectious. Miss seeing her around.
As a 1989 high school graduate, this film was profound. It literally changed the way we saw each other... we were all talking about this brilliant film about us.
I graduated in '86. Ok didn't graduate. Found it semi charming the first time. Boring as hell after that.. weird Science was far better.
@@67psychout I graduated in '86 as well, I loved these movies - Breakfast Club, 16 Candles, Weird Science, Ferris Bueller...loved them.
The film was a high school graduate?
@@TinLeadHammer You didn't know? It graduated in 1986, Summa Cum Laude even. I thought that was common knowledge! (or, it could have been poor wording on my part and *I* graduated in 1986. I'll let you decide which to believe :D )
@@67psychoutyes it was the best time to be alive and at that age
I graduated in 1988 so it was easy to relate to this movie in many ways. Every time I watch it, I see it a little different and it gets better. One of my favorite movies.
Boring. Say something original. WTFever.
@@jaredwhitaker3175 ok "Jared"....
@@jaredwhitaker3175 hi. it's your doctor. the test came out positive. sorry.
1987 here. don't tell "JARED" this might be too BORING for him in his fentanyl daze.
Absolutely!
Anthony Michael Hall is such a great actor. The characters he played as a young actor are all iconic.
His work in Six Degrees of Separation helped Will Smith become a megastar.
"I don't know what that means. Would you say that to Sean Penn after Bad Boys wrapped? I don't think so!" *LMAO!*
How could anyone NOT love Ally Sheedy. 🙂 She's obviously one of the best things about "Wargames" and "Breakfast Club". A true 80's lady all the way.
No love for Short Circuit...#5 is alive.
Don't forget St. Elmo's Fire
Portrayed a mortician in Only the Lonely with superstars John Candy and Maureen O'Hara. More than a bit part, she was Candy's girlfriend and the mother (Maureen) hated her son's new beau.
@@melreslor2114yep i remember,good movie 👍✌
I’ll be honest: She always got on my nerves because of the way she talked and overacted. Like a female Judd Nelson. He annoyed me not so much in “TBC” he was epic here but in “St. Elmo’s Fire” there were a couple cringe moments although I do love when a Demi Moore’s character Jules is wigging out, barricaded in her apartment. And they all show up to help. And when Andrew McCarthy shows up Judd says to Alley “Did you invite ALL your lovers…?… is your high school prom date going to show up too?” 😂
anyway, I felt the same way about Molly Ringwald that you felt about Ally . I can still remember when Molly was on the cover of time with a simple heading “Ain’t she sweet.?” And she was. down to earth, wholesome… Nothing like her character in the breakfast club… And I always found it so funny that the “nerd“ in the “princess“ we’re dating in real life. I loved Anthony Michael Hall. They were right in this documentary. He has such a likeable quality to him. He’s a great actor too. Unfortunately, he had a moment between weird science and Edward Scissorhands, where his fame went to his head, and it cost him dearly. He lost many roles, but the worst of it or I should say the best of it was he lost out on full metal jacket to Matthew Modine. I actually think Matthew Modine is a good actor, but Anthony Michael Hall would’ve been much better as joker in FMJ. It also would’ve launched his career into the stratosphere… But I still love him.
My favorite, hands-down of all the rat packers definitely Andrew McCarthy 🤩😍😌🥰😘… most of my friends had crushes on Rob Lowe, but I always had a thing for Andrew. I like pretty boy types, and he was the ultimate pretty boy with a heart, especially in “St. Elmo’s fire”…. Back to Ally, though… In retrospect, I appreciate her a lot more now that whole time was just amazing and God bless John Hughes for pulling at our heart strings. RIP 🙏🏼
I was class of 84 although the movie came out in 85 was about 84. It hit real close to home back then. Special movie.
OMG, all these years later and I am still totally in love with Ally Sheedy.
Me too buddy
I've always thought she was adorable!
How'd I get old so fast!! I watched this in my early 20s and now some of the actors and I are 60 years old.
The days go slow but the years fly by....
The breakfast club was to us GenXers what rebel without a cause was to 50s teenagers- it defined the teenage experience in the 80s - i was 12 yrs old at my first sleepover in middle school and this is one of the movies we watched- my friend’s mom was having a heart attack over all the language in the movie and almost shut the movie off - the only thing that saved us was her dad laughing away at the funny lines in the movie 🤣😂🤣
I was a teen in the 80's and the Breakfast Club is one of my favorite movies. So much so that my kids grew up loving it too.
My teenager has a _Breakfast Club_ shirt with the iconic group photo _and_ can quote the whole movie...just like me. I'm so proud!
@@OmniphonProductions you raised them right.
Total brilliance throughout this movie. Literally wish I could remember the first time I saw it. Even unpacking the lunch was a master scene for each of the characters and it only lasted a few seconds. You can see the dialogue going on in each character's mind as he builds that giant picnic spread.
Thank You John Hughes. Your films let me revisit the best time of my life. You are very missed.
Such an iconic movie. Can't believe it's almost 40 years old.
I grew up in the Chicago suburbs, I graduated high school in 1984.
"The Breakfast Club" was released the year after I graduated but it summed up my entire high school experience. The "cliques" the individuals, the fact that we could relate when isolated from our "cliques" but as soon as that experience was over, we'd all immediately go back to how it was before...but with a new found respect for the perspective of others not in our cliques.
It felt like a huge apology for the trauma of my high school experience. I completely identified with the characters, their struggles, their insite.
"The Breakfast Club" was and still is, 100% in touch with teens of that era. No other film ever portrayed mid-80's teens so perfectly!
(BTW: My mom did her student teaching in the same school where this was filmed.)
This movie is a masterpiece. I graduated in 1981.
I graduated in 83, this movie still hits home after 100 views….brilliant. It was required watching for my kids when they turned 13….that and Weird Science
One of the most memorable films of my generation. Absolutely brilliant and “real”.
In the mid eighties I went to high school in the San Fernando Valley with a kid who looked and acted just like Judd Nelson’s character.
Also at the same school was a kid who looked and acted like Jeff Spicoli from “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.”
Yes same here So Cal in the 80's never to be repeated again best time and place to be in history with the most amazing parties and people EVER!!! Cheers 🏄🤙
Graduated in '81. This was sooooo accurate of my high school experience. It even looked like our school 😂😂😂
Only film and art students in the 80's didn't like John Hughes movies. EVERYONE else loved them. "Deeply troubled goths'' pretended to hate the 80's genre of films including The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Uncle Buck, , and on and on and on.
But Hughes had his finger on the pulse. It was special.
Really? Nobody told my goth friends and me. We used to watch The Breakfast Club on repeat (as well as other movies) when I was a teen. I guess because we weren't "deeply troubled", just goth.
I loved all his films. This one came out when I was in HS so it resonated
Such a great movie! I was in high school when this came out. Amazing to me that this has held up to this day.🎧
Had just graduated high school when this came out and saw it like five times in a row was and still is the most amazing movie watch it all the times
Thank You John Hughes ❤ You made my childhood and the 80’s in general the best generation ever. Things have changed so much in such a sad, negative way…The 80’s weren’t perfect but they were REAL. Everything has gotten so sanitized and fake and “woke” … This film could and should NEVER be remade.

Never seen a picture of Hughes before now.
But I loved every movie and im sure ive seen them so many times.
Being the same age as thise kids may have something to do with it.
Maybe a couple years older but yeah the 80s was an exciting era and the music and the great vibes, the cold war was closing the newer wars hadnt started yet.
It was a time of easy money and fun in between jobs.
Music is a huge part of our lives.
The people who were born in the 60s and then coming of age during the 80s.
I wish i could relive it.
Me to, those were the days ✌
Great movie during a great decade and Ally Sheedy hasn't changed much 👍
I was 16 when Breakfast Club came out and didn't think Molly Ringwald was hot lol Youth is so wasted on the young, she is an absolute doll, WTH was i thinking LoL
There aren’t any movies like these anymore, it’s pretty sad and there aren’t any actors like this today.
Great film, great soundtrack. Timeless!
Ally Sheedy is still awesome! What a great film and cast!
SO many movies from my youth that hit me, in a good way. This and Fast Times kinda said it all.
The Matts Cookies are a real subtle and accurate nuance to the Chicago suburbia.
OMG!! Ally Sheedy is still Beautiful!!! & Molly Ringwald is the Most Beautiful Redhead Ever!(She now play's Archie's Mom in 'Riverdale'.
Wow, she's Mrs. Andrews - and Riverdale's still on. I liked the show, but lost track of it with Covid.

Nice, just figuring out now that this story took place on my 9th birthday. I haven't watched the complete movie since I was much younger and never caught that. One of the best movies of all time.
As of this comment, the year is 2024. I'm proud to say that my teenager...like me...can basically watch _The Breakfast Club_ with the sound turned off and quote the whole thing. This continues to be my favorite movie of all time. I wouldn't even guess how many times I've watched it. I can say that...growing up as a fat, nerdy, non-Mormon in Salt Lake City, Utah...this film provided a vital _refuge._ I think my kid...a queer teen in a small, rural, predominately conservative, Christian, Trump Republican town...likely loves it for similar reasons. That's the genius of this movie. John Hughes figured out that, with _very_ few exceptions, high school...and adolescence in general...sucks for _everyone;_ it's just a matter of variety and degree.
Oddly, despite worshiping this film, I didn't learn/realize until _years_ later how many of my fellow students, whom I thought all had their shit together, were just as lost and lonely as I was.
There's a term for that. Parenting done right!
You're so lucky cos my teen is a complete dope!😭😭🤣
@@gavinbrando8255 😂 There's still hope! Ten years from now, after the kid gets a bit of _real life_ under the belt, hopefully the kid will have a, "Holy crap! I just sounded just like my dad!" moment. 😉

There is something unique and compelling about Ally Sheedy.
Does barry manilow know you raid his wardrobe! 😂😂
Great movie and awesome hearing from the actors in the movie. Not sure why they need to fill space with opinions of other random people who had nothing to do with the movie.
he certainly packed a big lunch is just lolz galore
my favorite film of all time
SAME!!!
Me too 😉!
Saw the movie with my first "boyfriend". He played "Don't You Forget About Me" about 100 times. Never forgot about him.
Such an excellent movie
Anthony Michael Hall looks so different from his young, nerdy years.
Hello socialmoth4974 👋 especially when he was on Edward Scissorhands he was the jerk on that movie lol
Just remember "evil dies tonight!"😂
He grew up fast though. Even by the late 80's he looked more buff and mature.
I graduated in 89 . . I remember after watching this wanting to hang out with the Goths at school . . I felt like I understood them . . I was one of them . . The music was so hypnotizing! This movie basically told you who everyone was at school . .The next day you would walk by the jocks and you understood them, the goths and you knew who they were now, the nerds, the kid that had problems at home, and the popular rich girl I would slide notes into her locker telling her how I admired her but never told her who I was . . That wasn't creepy back then, it was called a secret admirer . . She knew it was me the whole time because she told me I was sweet but wasn't interested . . lol . .
I just found your channel. 👍🏼

The only absurd part of this movie is the ending where the two couples passionately kiss in front of parents. NO WAY, is a teenager doing that.
@@MU_STL_FAN1 the principal and janitor were in the basement talking about their lives
Nah.... you would've done it!...
Just gotten in trouble and asked "well who's that!?"
I knew Some kids that would totally do that.
@@MU_STL_FAN1 Teenagers would have atleast attempted those things. The teacher was frequently away from his office, too. The kids probably knew it.
The parents don't care about the kids remember?

brilliant film. had a crush on Ally Sheedy.
My favorite hockey team the Oilers uses that simple minds song everytime they score. So cool 🆒
My ALLTIME FAVORITE MOVIE
Ally looks amazing. She was always my crush.
Every parent should sit down and make their kids watch this movie.
Life of Agony (band from NYC) did an AMAZING COVER of "(dont you) forget about men" in like '95-'96? In their LP "Ugly"
I did that song at a karaoke bar recently, and folks lost their minds! It's not just because it's a great song; it's because that song _immediately_ evokes memories of the film!
Looking back on the mid 80's, which absolutely defined me as a human, I see why milennials/zoomies are desperately ripping off the culture.
Music doesnt even exist anymore
Movies that actually connect with your life, no more.
American life for people under 45 is sad , to me.
All they have is a copy of a copy of a copy.
Thats why they cant put down their phones. Thats litterally distracting them from how pointless and artless their lives are.
Is that you?
Heck of a comment, which i mostly agree with ✌
Ally got cut off at 11:35!!! I wanted to hear what she was talking about
21:58 - THAT's a great photo
It's a great movie, but ... I never ever understood the whole transformation of Aly Sheedy. At the end of the movie, why did everyone think she looked better when "transformed" (lipstick and bland haircut). She looked worse. I liked her a lot better earlier in the movie, when she looked weird. Never underestimate the power of weirdness. ❤
Was this documentary filmed recently? If so, then everyone looks amazing for their ages
Yeah, just recently, 16 years ago.
2008
2 things...did anyone ever do a play version of the breakfast club? And also, do I remember hearing about a breakfast club remake or like a TV show version? I appreciate any info, sincerely!
People see movies like this and relate to and empathize with the characters. They feel bad for kids who are being bullied, or made fun of for being nerds or out of place, and root for them *in the movie* , and they think, "oh, yeah, the popular kids, or the geeks or the jocks are more like me than I think and we're ALL going through pretty much the same stuff."
And then they go back to school or back online and they *still* are mean to each other and are cruel to anyone who is viewed as "different." Even though, nobody's really that different. They still make fun of how people look, or their weight, or what they are wearing, or whatever and still have their cliques or try to single out people and brand them as not belonging.
Nowadays it would be more like, "what Hogwarts House would you belong to", 🙄 and they don't get the whole message of that, either; that the whole point of dividing people into different groups and labeling them and pitting them against each other was what was wrong to begin with.
They get the points of movies like this and think, "hey this is so wrong", but then they don't really change. *Some* might, but most people just stay the same generation after generation. It's disheartening that we can't seem to evolve out of this pattern no matter how many times that message gets put out there.
I used to know Ally, she really loved animals. At parties, she would disappear and spend hours with the house parrot or dog. Nice girl, just eccentric.
bad hair day 9:39 🤣
Can you edit this clip so it's just Ally Sheedy?

Ally Sheedy looks better now than she did when she was a teenager. It's not fair, we are the same age! 😂
My cousin did scores on several Hughes' films, but not this one.
Hey everything aside, the Carl janitor actor could have made an interesting Al Bundy, his eyes are also kind of like that actor from the man from earth movie
Ally Sheedy still looks good.
What is the name of the music at 9:14
I must admit, I remember seeing this movie in Jr. High and wanting to get a Saturday. I then realized it wasn't as cool as the movie made it to be.
Ally Sheedy Still Looks Good.
And i don't mean that he looks bad...just...unrecognisable, lacks his signature looks, like Sheedy, Ringwald or Emilio Estevez managed to retain throughout the years, it's not about getting older or not, they all got much older obviously, it's more or less about retaining their recognisable looks from their early days...other examples of actors, who managed that from that era are Jon Cryer and John Cusack...they both still look like their 80s selves, just more rough, older...
Love no cell phones!!
My girl crush is Ally Sheedy. I wanted to be her back then, I rejected to her character in this movie a lot. Now I'm 60, and I still want to be Allison Reynolds.
Better yet, I wanna be Ally Sheedy, because she looks absolutely great, and I live her vibe.
We got in high school.
How is Bob doing?
Anyone know what year this was made? Late 90s?
It was released in the spring of 1985.
Okay so I’m picking up on a theme here and it’s all these actors attributing credit to John. Or maybe that’s all that gets in the press.
Sure JH might’ve been the mastermind. But then these kids had to put their stamp on it.
That’s the collaborative part and that’s what made these movies so great.
Also good writers write fast. We just start typing to our anthems.
No surprise John passed a joint or a lot. Kids gotta loosen up a bit sometimes. Is it terrible? Well it’s either John or some kid who has no idea what he’s doing.
Clearly the kids loved him.
In the 80s people were doing things. At least John wasn’t getting them strung out on blow or dope.
For the folks who wanna throw rocks, don’t you remember high school?
I know my parents started confessing things when I became an adult. No one is perfect ladies and gems.
high school for me was a draft card, being forced to do something or prison and my first human kill all before leaving my teen years! and it was a child the same age as kids i baby sat for dirt bike gas! just alittle over 50 years has past!

When I first saw the movie, I thought there were aspects of it that were effective and overall, very entertaining with an appealing group of young actors but let's not kid ourselves. A lot of the dialogue was silly and pretentious and not very realistic. Parts of the movie were beyond absurd but somehow, it makes it through all of that and I still enjoyed it.
