Fixing Kalos' Gym Leaders

  • In today's video we take a look at Pokemon X and Y's Gym Leaders! Many people have requested these games for my next "fixing" video and I can see why. These Gym Leaders are some of the most underlevelled and underdeveloped ones out there, so many of them don't even use Pokemon with 4 moves! So sit down and relax as we go through their teams one by one, pointing out the good and the bad, and theorycrafting how to make them a challenge (difficulty scaled to a hypothetical hard mode if that was a thing that existed outside of gen 5).

👋Hey everyone, thanks for checking out my video!
☀I just wanted to clarify that the difficulty we're aiming for here is a hypothetical "hard mode", something Pokemon lacks but is a feature I would love to see in the mainline games in the future.

@@Xtraaa444 yeah the hard mode easy mode stuff in black and white 2 was really messed up, aside from it being locked behind beating the game, I think they messed up the easy mode by lowering the levels but somehow keeping the stats the same. -Lapras (gift Lapras given after Korrina's gym, so must be common/traditional in Kalos)
-Weavile (blue and red like Wulfric's theming)

7:55 Nah, I hate this. Grant has a nice theme of having both fossils be his only team members at the same level. Which is probably one of the first we have seen in the whole franchise. I would definitely keep it that way, just buff them up. It would be also funny to see this be a double battle (we never get those early on for Gym Leaders). With the theme they picked for the Gym, I think it would also be justifiable to give one of them Air Balloon or maybe even both of them.

Something I feel later gens fail to do is have TMs that are *unique* to their generation, and are incorporated into the gym leader's team. I think Hoenn did that the best - the only repeat TM is Thunderbolt, which you could easily replace it with Shock Wave. If there are no new or worthwhile moves of the gym's respective type introduced in said generation, maybe reconsider if that type should be used for a gym.

    • @thewhatness
      @thewhatness Před 4 měsíci +6

There's not a single new Rock type move introduced in Gen 6, so why have Grant? Same with Psychic type attacks with Olympia. Infestation works for Viola, but I also like making Sticky Web the reward TM. This mirrors Roark giving you a seemingly unuseful TM with Stealth Rock, but is INCREDIBLE in competitive. Power-Up Punch is perfect for Korrina, no notes. There are better options for Ramos - Grassy Terrain, Petal Blizzard, Spiky Shield (I wouldn't even mind if his ace was a Chesnaught to make it work). Clemont should give you Parabolic Charge. Dazzling Gleam is great for Valerie. Wulfric should give you Freeze Dry.

Floette's a brilliant pick for Ramos! The Eviolite would make its effective base stats 79.5 for defence and 156 for special defence - great estimation.
Grass type needs a buff imo :(
Weird echo on "a lot with Grass types'" in the Gogoat section btw.
That "top 3 most forgettable gym leaders" skit cracked me up, amazing.
    Yo nice Mega Ampharos animations!
Valerie's cool, but no Whimsicott is a bit sad. It would decrease the Gen 6 representation, however, so it makes sense to not use it - surprised about the overlap with Ramos on Florges though.
I was wondering - will the Assault Vest really help Avalugg? Turns out, maybe? It raises its base SpDef from 46 (below Ditto's 48) to 76 (same as Lanturn and Prinplup, just below Meloetta-Pirouette's 77 and Luxray's 79 and above Skeledirge's 75... which is also Servine's, Plusle's, Swablu's, Gengar's and Entei's).
Maybe Froslass could work for giving Wulfric a counter for Fighting-types?

I appreciate that Belodie honestly going into this I was excited to see if I could utilize the eviolite for the middle gyms (personally I'm a big fan of my eviolite meinfoo set)
I absolutely agree grass types need a buff, 5 weaknesses and what like 7 types resist them is just a bit much (especially for a starter type when the other 2 types are REALLY good).
Yeah weird echo I've done my best with the audio lol but it's not my strong suit so expect imperfections until I level up my audio skills.
Omg I'm glad you liked that top 3 most forgettable gym leaders bit, It's tough to think who would be just as if not more forgettable than ramos tho coz like, I don't remember them... but theyre out there... somewhere o_o
No yeah I agree the overlap with floette and florgess was something on my mind, but Floette really fits ramos and Florgess really fits Valerie when you look into her interest in floral designs. Rip Whimsicott, I do like that Pokemon and it'd suit Valerie's team as well! Would totally be down for it if somebody else decided to give her one!
So Avalugg has base 95 HP and base 76 sp Def, definitely not super tanky but nothing to scoff at.
From my battles with that Avalugg (along with providing it a +4 level boost) It certainly is in the realm of possibility to survive a handful of strong special attacks, which is good enough for me considering if it survives it has 4 very powerful attacks to hit back with.
With Froslass, I don't actually think it's in X/Y Pokemondb and Serebi didn't have it listed on the Kalos pokedex. If it existed though, would be a very useful addition as yeah fighting types are the biggest sore spot for Wulfric
As always thanks for your comment Belodie! I appreciate the insight and kind words, hoping I can get the Elite 4 video out far quicker than it took for the Gym Leaders (will try and stream the rest of X and Y soon maybe next weekend)

  • @COMETINMOOMINVALLEY
    @COMETINMOOMINVALLEY Před 4 měsíci +1

I think my biggest nitpick is how Ledyba knows 4 moves while Surskit and Vivillon only get 3. That's not really buffing them. Imo. I think giving Surskit Rain Dance could be good since it'll actually get some use out of Swift Swim. Otherwise it's just a useless Ability that does nothing. 😭 I'd personally change it to Rain Dance, Mud Shot, Bug Bite, and Bubble for Surskit while changing its nature to Timid. So it can get the speed boost from it + Swift Swim when Rain Dance is used. Mud Shot and Bug Bite would be effective counters towards at least two of the Starters (Chespin and Fennekin) with the added effects of Mud Shot lowering your speed as hers is increased and Bug Bite eating the berry your Pokémon is possibly holding. For Vivillon I'd change its moves to Poison Powder, Energy Ball, Flash, and Infestation. Energy Ball for coverage against Froakie and Flash to lower accuracy while being a reference to Viola being a photographer. Its Ability would still be Compound Eyes while also having a Timid nature for the speed increase.

Glad you clarified it's a hypothetical hard mode, because I def thought through this "that wouldn't be great for the normal game" especially regarding giving the first gym leader Light Screen and Reflect. As well as introducing the berries that null supereffective moves with the first gym leader, it just wouldn't be the right time for it for a player who's still adjusting to the game. (Also, you wouldn't be able to get any yourself, so it would probably feel awfully cheap for the first gym leader rather than natural.) I also think the steel null berry for Amarua on the second gym leader would just come off as punishing the player for knowing the type chart for less intuitive types well enough to try. I think at least the first 2, probably 3 but to a lesser degree for the 3rd, gym leaders, at least in the regular game, should be about rewarding players for understanding the basics rather than being genuinely difficult. Like how Brock - and many other rock-type early leaders - is actually terrible, but he makes sure you know your matchups.
Obviously this is all analysis assuming this is the regular game, which you stated wasn't your intent. On the other hand, when it comes to the phrasing of "fixing" it definitely reads to me as "improving for the regular game" rather than "creating a hard mode." I think you might also enjoy thinking about what a gym's role should be for its place in the game if you took into account typical game progression. Later gyms could still do silly and punishing things, but I think it might be fun to for you to consider what you're trying to teach the player with the earlier gyms rather than just maxing damage/survivability for the mons themselves.

    • @RoryTheFiend
      @RoryTheFiend  Před 4 měsíci

Yeah it's something I always forget to properly clarify when writing the script but yeah this is a hypothetical hard mode option, I do agree early gyms being about understanding the basics and rewarding players for that is a good thing
I'd say the steel halving berry for amaura is fine since it's 4x effective it may still just die anyway, but if it lives on 1hp, to me it's less of a punish and more of a surprising oh wow it actually lived, you take a bit extra damage then KO it next turn, nothing too major here (e.g. I absolutely avoided focus sash until gym 8)
Yeah I do like brock in a learning the game sense, where no matter what starter you have you'll know some match ups are good / bad and they play a huge part in the battles.
I'd argue in a hard mode a gyms role changes somewhat, they should always be a challenge and teach the player fundamentals. However in hard mode we're shifting the window from the basics to more advanced interactions, such as their abilities and held items (and hopefully provide a tough engaging battle for seasoned players). At least that's my opinion on things, other people may disagree and that's completely fine! This diverse opinion can only be a good thing to provide more variety and unique challenges

For me I came up with a idea for Pokemon Z when I was in early highschool
    Viola
Level 12 Surskit Level 12 Butterfree Level 14 Vivilion(Ice if you picked Chespin Electric it you picked Froakie Ground if you picked Fenekin)
I made Vivilion type based off it's mant forms you can get like tundra or sandy to make it worth collecting rather than the thrid Butterfree clone. Since this is the 1st gym it's moves will be weak ones like mud slap Powder Snow Thundershock. Surskit is a counter to fite and can get off an infestation or set up rain dance to weaken fire type attacks. Butterfree slows your team down with stuff like Stun Spore or Poison powder I'm not a monster you won't have to deal with Sleep Powder on 1st gym on a tanky yet non ace Pokemon
    TM infestation
    Grant
Level 19 Onix Level 20 Auora Level 20 Traynt(oran berry)
Onix is meant to set up stealth rock and sandstorm it has sturdy so it can do either. Aurora has refigate and can hit hard. Since you challenge Grant a lot earlier the only counters you'll get are Steel pokemon and Chespin evolution so he gets fire fang on Trynt.
    TM Rock Tomb
    3rd Gym
    Clemont
Level 25 Emolga Level 25 Lanturn Level 27 Heliosk(sitrus berry)
I introduce Clemont earlier to deal with level gap you just return to the city because you find from the other scientists who were imprisoned that tech Team Flare is using is made by Clenont. You later find out Team Flare has Bonnie held hostage in return Clemont has to make tech for them.
    TM Volt Switch
    Korrina
Level 29 Mineffo Level 29 Machoke Level 31 Hawlucha Level 32 Pangro(Sitrus berry)
You won't encounter much fairy pokemon yet but you do get a lot of physics and flying. Mineffo in this game goes for flinching and will switch with U turn if it thinks it can outspeed if you bring a physic type to Pangro or Machoke if you bring a flying type. Pangro has bullet punch Halwacha and Machoke have rock tomb.
    TM: Powerup Punch
    5th Gym Flying
I decided to replace Ramos type since I want to do something different and Kalos introduces a lot of potential for flying pokemon.
Level 34 Talionflame Level 34 Jumpulff Level 35 Skarymory(Sitrus Berry) Level 37 Mega Pidegot
A diverse flying type team that covers so many weaknesses. Talionflame is a beast and switches out with U tur
before attacking again when your weakned and can set up tailwind for the others. Jumpluff hits hard with acrobatics and can stall with leech seed Giga Drain and Sleep powder. Skarymory deals with Rock and Ice and has mud slap for electric.
    TM: Aerial Ace
    6th Gym Fairy
Level 40 Mr Mime(Light Clay) Level 40 Azuramil Level 41 Sylevon(Sitrus berry) Level 43 Mega Mawile
Mr Mime sets up Light Screen and reflect and is answer to poison pokemon. Normal Mawile is beast with swords dance imagine what a Mega would do it's a great way to deal with Posion and Steel. Mawile has Liquidation for Fire and Ground Pokemon that's a last resort she usually switch in to Azuramil(with Huge Power) which has Dig as well for Poison and Electric. Slveon is Umbreon but a physical attacker fairy it can stall with Toxic Recover and Dig
    TM is Play rough
    7th Gym Olympia
Level 44 Malmar(Muscle Band) Level 44 Slighyph Level 45 Slowking(Sitrus Berry) Level 47 Mega Alakazam
Malmar with Contray ability and has Superpower. If it sees a bug type it'll swap into Slighpyh. Slowking has Flamethrower for Bug and Grass. Alakazam has Shadow Ball and Dazzling Gleam for Dark and Ghost Pokemon. Slighyph has Focus Blast for Rock Ice steel and Dark. Also besides Malmar all are special attackers with Calm mind.
    8th Gym Wulfric
    Level 54 Mega Abomosnow Level 51 Frosslas(Lax esscence) Level 51 Lapars Level 52 Avvaulg(Sitrus berry) Level 50 Gilalie(Muscle Band)
I was thinking about having him send out Mega Abomasnow first to catch player off guard and prevent set up as it's just too strong while it's snow warning can boost other pokemon like Frosslas with snow cloak and lax iscsnce which boosts eviasness and it has destiny bond. Lapars great counter to fire steel and rock it's just meant to use sing or thunder wave and weaken your team. Avvaulg is a tank with Earthquake and Rock Slide to deal with all Fire types and rock and Steel types. Gilalie is just there Wulfric will send it out to use stealth rock or Explosion or a shield for one of his more stronger Pokemon
    Anyway that's challenge mode.
For easy mode I can do another

I've found every pokemon title to be easy once I was more familiar with how they work but now they're all a breeze if you play them the intended way, not an excuse for poor design choices of later titles but I suppose that would require them to stop throwing out ideas every generation and refining them, which is part of what I adore about this series, not necessarily trying to make gyms harder but at least more interesting, can definitely still bulldoze right through them when you know how to play but it'll at least be a little more engaging, sucker for learning about mechanics too so held items and abilities that synergize well has always been a treat :)

Something in the realm of a realistic hard mode, and using fun held items / abilities / movesets that could broaden a players horizon and force them to change up how they tackle the battle. Thanks for your comment!

I was really hoping to see Clemont sporting a rain team with Heliolisk. Rain dance, dry skin, thunder, and surf would make for a pretty tough challenge, though I can understand not going for that since it's not his ace

I did consider it, if I did go for that strategy I'd also give him a Lanturn with Thunder & Surf for sure
