  • Excerpts from Scottie Pippen’s memoir still have social media buzzing yesterday as Pippen didn’t hold back about how he felt about Michael Jordan and his documentary “The Last Dance.” Some people are criticizing Pippen for calling out the teammate that helped turn him into a household name, while others are sticking up for Pippen's important role on the Chicago Bulls' dynasty. Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe debate whether Pippen's career is overrated or underrated.

And the words they use to attack him are going to visceral because he loves to pick ONE event and make that their entire career and slam with with emotions. He will never answer Shannon’s question he will just say “well yea”. Where ever Jason Whitlock is that is where Skip needs to go. He is Pippen and Shannon is Jordan

@@LSmallCatL the fact of the matter is that Scottie Pippen is discussed more and praised more than he deserves because of Jordan. Everyone in the 90's is under Jordan's shadow, not just his teammates. I'm from Houston and Hakeem was picked first draft the same year as Jordan was picked 3rd. We passed up on Jordan in favor of Hakeem and Hakeem was so great that we're not even mad about it. And when Jordan was gone, Hakeem won two rings back to back. Hakeem was arguably the second greatest player in the NBA at that time, not of all time, and hardly anyone even talks about him. I could make a whole list of players in the 90's greater than Pippen who aren't as famous or talked about as much but the point is; had it not been for Jordan, Pippen would have been exactly what he was when he was with the Rockets and the Trailblazers; another great player that no one talks about.

Ignoring Pippen's crazy recent remarks, and even on light of some of Pippen's miscues from his playing days, he was incredible and what Skip forgets, is how many of those playoff series that were won just as much by Pippen than Jordan. It's just that nobody remembers that, when it's MJ drilling the last second game winning shot, or making some ridiculous superman layup, etc. That's what sticks in people's memories and it's understandable. Sometimes Pippen would own the entire court for 2/3 of the quarter, singlehandedly keeping the Bulls in the game, and then MJ would take over for the rest. He was always the straight man to MJ, so to speak, and MJ always got the punchline, because he deserved it because he was the greatest, especially offensively and in the clutch. Not one of, but THE greatest. During one grueling playoff series, maybe during last dance season, I remember Scottie telling the press, "you all want me to go out and score 40pts a game like Michael, but I'm not the player he is". But he just wanted the respect for being the player he was, and in a lot of ways he did, and in many others he didn't. But MJ always gave Pippen his due, except for one time I felt he was condescending, which was the speech he gave when Bulls retired #33. Other than that, he's made SO many remarks about how great Pippen was, and that's coming from the player with the biggest and most narcissistic ego of all time, so that should say something about how valued he was to MJ.

Pippen is not overrated. He is heavily underrated. People mostly look at stats, championships and overall playing ability. Pippen was a great teammate who encouraged players being harassed and insulted by MJ. However, his most important contribution to the Bulls' dynasty was being a top 5 player in the entire league (as shown when MJ was out), but only demanding 10% of the team salary cap. Per dollar, Pippen was extremely valuable to the Bulls by performing at a very high level, and durable for 8 straight years, demanding only 10% of the salary cap. To make a contemporary analogy. DeMar Derozan has about the same PER as Pippen over his career - Pip's was probably considerably more valuable in Chicago because his performance plummeted in Houston/Portland. If you give a franchise a perennial all-star for eight years for only 10% of the salary cap, they will (barring unfortunate injuries) do great. This can be expressed in two ways, (a) they can attract to max-level superstars, and have an all-star, or (b) hire very good role players. Scientifically speaking, Pippen is at least as responsible for the Bulls' dynasty than MJ.

@@Dennis-bu9gr Well, the best comparison to Pippen's performance without MJ is the 1994-94 season with the Bulls. It's the best comparison because everything is almost the same. He was also the main guy on offense on that team. That means, no MJ, and no-one else to bail him out. Pip had 22 points, 8,7 boards, 5.6 assists, 2.93 steals with 49%FG. The bulls won 55 games, and lost to the Knicks in the second round voting. He finished 3rd in MVP. I would say that Pippen did fantastic without MJ in Chicago.
In Houston or Portland, he was old, had too big contracts, and he was never the main man. Houston was also too old as Hakeem and Barkley were on their last legs.
Your notion of 25 points is arbitrary and over-emphasizing scoring.
Your line of argumentation could be used in reverse. What did MJ do without Pippen? Early exits in the playoffs, and not even getting into the playoffs. I feel that Pippen gets discredited because some fans want to put MJ among the Gods. By reducing Pippen, they think that the elevate MJ.
Finally, there is one person who does not disrepect Pippen's basketball performances, and that's MJ himself. In one championship year, he told everyone that Pippen and him had equal value in the Finals series, and he wanted to share it with Pippen. Also, many years later, in MJ's HoF fame speech. What was the first thing he said? "In all the videos, you didn't happen to see just me. (You) saw Scottie Pippen (in) Every championship I won." That was his way of giving credit to one of the most underrated players of his generation.

I believe Jordan would still win a couple of rings without Pippen, as the league lacked a powerhouse team (other than the Bulls) after bad boys Pistons and until the Jazz. But still, those 2 three peats wouldn't happen. Pippen was an amazing defender and one of the early examples of a point forward. Despite it not being his strong suit, his scoring was also crucial for the Bulls as they weren't necessarily a great offensive team. The bottom line of the whole controversy is this:
    1) MJ23 should’ve been more sensitive of how his #1 (Pippen) was portrayed in THE LAST DANCE. MJ23 has gone on record that Pippen was with him in every championship run and he needed Pippen to win 6 rings.
    2) Pippen coming out with his tell-all book ripping MJ23 apart and giving interviews where he trashes MJ23 was VERY WRONG. Pippen could’ve been more PC with his criticism of MJ23. Instead of calling out MJ23, Pippen could highlight his accomplishments and his team’s accolades. You don’t look like a class act by criticizing the GOAT.
In regard to THE LAST DANCE, the primary focus was MJ23 so Pippen has a point the documentary should’ve been about the Bulls team. Although I agree that MJ23 wanted THE LAST DANCE to be all about him so he can become relevant again and not lose his brand equity to LBJ, there was NO REASON to expose this. It really seems that Pippen is jealous of MJ23’s financial success. Pippen is just trying to figure out how to make 💰 and he’s chosen the route of creating controversy by trashing MJ23. I hate to see this because I always thought Pippen & MJ23 were good friends but I can’t see them mending the fence (if it even ever existed).
