Steam O Rama! - Flying Scotsman and the Southern Railway Steam Program

- Fifty years ago, a truly once in a lifetime gathering of steam was staged.
We recreate "Steam O Rama", originally operated on November 2, 1969. On this day, the "Flying Scotsman" made its appearance on the Southern Railway during its tour of the United States. Southern, only a few years into its steam program, went all out for hosting their foreign guest. Savannah & Atlanta 4-6-2 750 and Southern Railway 2-8-2 4501 also operated specials between Atlanta and Birmingham. All three trains met in Anniston for a special gathering. To this day, a plaque remains at Anniston, denoting the day that three steam engines were brought together.

Was the flying Scotsman given a new whistle when she came to America?
Scotsman was fitted with an American whistle during the overhaul that put it into near full compliance with our safety regulations at the time before it came over the pond for its tours. Only thing it lacked was the headlight which was fitted once it arrived in Boston. But anyways, from what I can gather, it was a bit of a "whistle chameleon", as I call it. Seems Scot never had just one singular American whistle throughout it's time here in the States, they were always changing. Only whistle that stayed on it the whole time was it's British bell whistle which was already on it before the overhaul.

After Southern 4501’s 1st retirement in 1948, instead of being displayed, she was sold to a short line called the Kentucky and Tennessee railroad.
She worked there until 1963 when she was retired AGAIN.
Who wouldn't know, I mean so many ppl know 630 and 722 are ET&WNC 207 and 208 so they would know that too
