This 1942 film also features Dick Purcell, Joan Woodbury, Mantan Moreland, J. Farrell MacDonald, and George J. Lewis.

Interesting reference to Superman with the future Perry White in residence. And Mantan Moreland was a natural born genius. Never has been anyone as fun to watch as him. Vastly under appreciated both then and now.
Funny how attitudes change, today Mantan Moreland would by a massive star today and rightly so he’s brilliantly funny and comes across as a really nice guy , I always watch anything he’s in he makes a movie worth watching.
One of his last roles was in Spider Baby (filmed in 1964) with my friend Beverly Washburn. He was indeed a good comedy actor and a nice man.

Was Mantan Moreland ever even mediocre in any movie? He was always a great joy to watch; always carried the movie and made it so much better.
He was as accurate in his acting as Clark Terry was in his trumpet playing, as joyful a person as ever the world has seen...loving, and trumpeting for everyone's enjoyment.
He was good at providing the 'comedy relief'. Does he have any 'serious' roles to his credit?

Several commenters have mentioned that John Hamilton, who played the killer, is remembered mostly for playing Perry White in the TV Superman series. But did anyone notice where Joan Woodbury's character mentions Superman? -- District Atty: "How do you explain a little thing like Mr. Harrison being in two places at the same time?" Girl Reporter: "Yes, even Superman hasn't figured that one out yet." And this was ten years before the TV series premiered.
I don't know if anyone else did, but I surely noticed it. That was almost ten years before he took on the role of Perry White.
@John Willard...Yes, very interesting but Superman had been around in comic books since 1938 and on radio since 1940 and in several Paramount movie cartoons starting in 1941-all before this 1942 movie.
Mantan is a real hoot. Too bad today's over sensitive culture couldn't appreciate his talent. Joan Woodbury was a very attractive lady. Much more so than most in Hollywood today.

Viewed this film 6 months ago and enjoyed it. Now on a different channel I am watching it again. I want to see if they are one and the same or perhaps a second version unknown to the viewing audience. It's easy to be fooled these days with the expertise of Photoshop hackers. So far its hard to tell but the truth always comes out in the end.
After doing a search ive come to the conclusion that the movie I saw the first time was on this channel. One and the same. I fooled myself, ha ha! I knew I'd get to the bottom of this. Thanks for twice the enjoyment!

Very well-written mystery. They kept the audience guessing near the beginning about John Hamilton. Then, in the 2nd half, about the secret room. Joan Woodbury latrer played BRENDA STARR. Dick Purcell later played another crusading D.A. in the 1944 "CAPTAIN AMERICA" serial! Warren Hymer was a great character actor. I was amazed how he got serious so fast after his best friend was murdered.

People frequently confuse Eddie Anderson and Mantan Moreland.....Eddie Anderson was the character ``Rochester" from the Jack Benny Show. Mantan Moreland was frequently seen in old murder mysteries, The East Side Kids series and Charlie Chan films.

This movie should be retitled "Great Caesar's Ghost" seeing John Hamilton is in it. He went on to play Perry White in 1950's Superman. This movie also has a similar storyline to The Dark Mirror 1946 which starred Olivia de Havilland where she plays twins, one good one bad, the latter committing murder.
The cutest interaction between man and woman in any of these films.
That lady early in the movie. tells a Superman joke. And John Hamilton ( Perry White ) plays the deaf guy.

That was really entertaining! I was looking for part 2 of the Phantom Killer having to do with Texarkana but found this instead. Some comical stuff in here! Right in the middle of awful murders. Thankyou!🎉😧😍
This is a better movie than Texarkana, whether you treat it as a comedy or a drama or a murder mystery or a love story revolving around Dick Purcell and Joan Woodbury (who was hot stuff in her younger days). It's sort of a 'formula plot', but well worth watching more than once.

Lewis was Zorro’s father in the 1950s Disney series as well as appearing in many serials and films.
I own and watched these over again many times when I use to take a break from cable or briefly house Internet, now use my 6" phone screen and use CZcams They come in 50 pack or 100 movie pack of Horror or Thriller pack, I had found them years ago from a catalog. Today I can search the internet or even eBay to try and find most anything.

I never registered on it before but Mantan is really kind of short. Lot of comedic skill packed in a small frame. :)
A shame he wasn't born later in an era where he would have gotten the kind of roles and respect he deserved, but his career was about as good as any non-white actor's back then. Incredible talent caught in a terrible era.
For a lower budget B-movie, this is one of the best. Others comments mention the writing, and that's true. There were enough very interesting, sometimes just momentary, points of real interest, to make this an excellent example of the genre.

The younger cop has an interesting boxer's facem. People are sooooo fascinating.
"That's what they used to say about fifty million Frenchmen but look at them now" - a reminder that this film was made in 1942 when France was still under Nazi occupation. This crack would hardly have endeared this movie to the French, not that they would have been able to see it when it was first released.
Yep a 3000 mile ocean sure kept the USA safe. Even the 20 miles of the English channel served to stop the WW2 German army. France had nothing, except a thin border line.
Near exact remake of a film starring Lionel Atwill called The Sphinx. That film too, rightly or wrongly, I found it primarily a long setup for the piano scenes. Plenty of Charlie Chan alumni in this one. The girl was in at least two, the mute's right hand man was wheel chair bound in one, Moreland of course in many, uhm .. and the nerdy older man was in at least one. Am I missing anybody?

Attn: Mary & Sarah: Dudley Dickerson was indeed with the Three Stooges, with Andy Clyde, with Hugh Herbert, and many more, but he's not in the credited cast here. What you're seeing is Mantan Moreland, who was terrific in his own element with his comic partner Ben Carter but sometimes out of place in other movies. Actors are seldom versatile enough to fit in absolutely everywhere.
Despite the "comic relief" stuff so popular in the old days, its a fun movie, even after several viewings. Mantan Moreland's scene with the mug book reminds me of one of the great C. Chan movies, when he visits a relative in prison. By the way, his name in this movie, "Nicodemus" is a reminder that Nicodemus out in Western Kansas is a Negro town.
The actor who played "Lightnin" in the Amos and Andy series Nick Stewart billed himself as Nick O'Demus in that series. I never saw the connection.
Cool.., I do like the original, ("The Sphinx"), a little better though.. Awesome cast though..!! (Wish there would've been a bit more J.Farrel MacDonald..!). That really is what made these older movies soo excellent.., it wasnt about "stars".., it was everybody.., all these amazing character actors..!!! Thx 4 posting..!! :-)

Joan Woodbury was IMO a good actress and she had a few better roles in other movies and she certainly had very alluring somewhat exotic looks...born in Los Angeles of Danish, English and Native American heritage.

Tall, provocative actress Joan Woodbury (aka Nana Martinez) was born Joanne Elma Woodbury in Los Angeles on December 17, 1915. +Ronald Strange You are so correct about being a wonderful performer. My interest in the film is due to the fact that John Hamilton has a starring billing. Most often he is cast in a supporting role. I had the pleasure of meeting John's son in August, 2014, and I shared this with him. "Young" John had been looking for it for years, and I was so glad I could share it with him.
This makes it twice I've seen "Perry White" revealed as a bad guy--I guess make that two bad guys. There was only one obvious conclusion for this one, but the simple was carried out well. An average "programmer," not great, but okay.
